that's a good idea , an other would be that we can pick the crops in the feilds and make bread with it or may be go see a special npc cook that will charge you a fee to make bread with your flour.

I think this is a good idea, however, I would suggest that the map tiles have the option of wheter or not the player can attack and destroy the blocks- this will allow your Mine maps, as well as allow doors, walls, beds, etc to be destroyed if a modder wants.

Maybe allow it so that we can set strength or damage or even specfic items requirements to destroy map tiles. This would also allow modders to create unique maps with lots of secret rooms and/or passages

Nifty idea. I think that could be modded. Just think of the walls as doors that can be opened, but not closed (that is easily done). On the downsdide the pick and shovel feature would be missing.

I don't see why the pick and shovel idea have to be thrown out- after all, going with the "door" metaphor- certain doors require certain "keys". So why wouldn't we be able to set certain tiles as being able to be opened by only picks and/or shovels? The pick and shovel, or anything for that matter, become keys then.

Shovel and pick 'keys' would work.
Only problem would be the lock-picking ability. Bashing the 'doors' could be disabled, if that is desired or not, but I am quite sure that lock-picking cannot.
Hmm, that lock-picking goes along with 'enhanced digging' would be a little odd http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif .

edit:
PS: Actually it would be good, if there was a setting that would make certain doors 'unpickable'. Not only for this idea, but in some situations you might want to able to create certain door, magic portals, whatever that can exclusively be opened by the apropriate key.

How about a 'mine' type dungeon where the entire map would be solid rock, and the player would have to 'dig/tunnel' his/her way through it in search for gold and gems.

In support of this, there should be a new spell called 'Averice' which would highlight treasure in the imediate area. (this would give the player 'direction' and eliminate the need to 'tunnel/dig' "ALL" the rock to make sure he/she got all the treasure in the mine!)

Also, shovels and picks would have some kind of bonus to digging/tunneling.

Let me know what you think! Cheers.

Unpickable doors bug the hell out of me. That sort of ruins the whole point of being a thief because lockpicking usually becomes a matter of getting to trivial treasures and not past the important parts of the game. What's the point in being a thief if you can't unlock the doors you _really_ want to get past?

Think of magic portals that have to opened with some sort of artifact or spell. A lockpick would not be much help in that case.

Speaking of doors, are thieves the only ones who can detect secret doors? How is my fighter able to find them? Haven't come across this yet, but I was wondering all the same.
