View Full Version : Estimated System Reqs?

Having seen the StarFury website my first impressions are quite favorable. But my concern is what will the system reqs be like. The game doesn't look too demanding on a PC (I have a P3450 with TNT2). But I hope that Malfador will follow their precedent and make this game a widely usable as possible...

I guess I should get to my question, what are the likely system requirements?

Thanks

I don't know what A.5 stands for but it is using Direct X. It will run on any conventional PC.

But most if not all computers now a days have this feature pre-installed. And if they don't then everygame that needs it that I've found comes with DirectX on the CD for you to install from. So it's no big deal no matter what. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif

Just make sure to get the most current Version of DirectX you can find. Sometimes you can find it on one of those computer games magazines disc, like what PC Gamer puts out. Or you download it from the Windows website.

You can download DirectX free of charge from Microsoft - use the link above.

I've got an 850mhz Celeron laptop with some wierd Gateway video card that uses the systems ram(either8,16,0r 32 meg). Will that wierd video card handle the game?
Actually it doesn't matter too much as my desktop will handle it fine and as I just preordered I'll find out for myself soon anyways. http://www.hallospass.de/smilies/smilie_help.gif

There should be a Starfury demo out sometime soon. Download the demo and see how it runs on your system (I don't know if my new computer has any 3D capability, that's how I will test it).

BTW, this thing doesn't require a joystick, does it?

I have a 466 celeron with a plenty of RAM and a voodoo 3 16mb, does anyone know if the game will run on my system ?

It's been a while since we discussed our system specs. He was only getting 10 fps as I recall. If you call that playable I guess it's ok. I'm getting 20-24 fps on an 800 Mhz Duron with 512 MB. I think it's preferable to have at least a 1 Ghz CPU myself. Not very expensive these days. (In fact, I just purchased a 1.33 Ghz Athlon XP to upgrade my current system... $43!)

www.pricewatch.com (http://www.pricewatch.com)

Edit: Heh! So now I go look again and you can get one for $2 less! Ah well, you have to buy some time or other.

How is it any more chancy than any other form of 'distance' buying, like mail order?

I only had one problem with a vendor, and it was kind of my own fault. I bought a processor which only had a 30 day warranty, waited 2 months to put the thing in the M/B and it didn't work. I have had to return parts (that were IN warranty) and never had a problem.

If your not a "computer person" you might have better success with a local computer company, but if you know what you want, pricewatch is the way to go, imho.

I'm not exactly sure what I have, as my computer was custom built for me. I know it has the latest ADK (I know that's close, but I can't remember the exact letters right now), which runs about 1.8 gb, a 32 mb Savage V4 video chip and 256 megs of ram. I hope that's good enough.

The settings are ajustable in the game or out of it. I'm running XP Pro on a custom built P4 1.8 ghz with 512K Cache, 512 MB DDR RAM, and GF4 Ti 4400. I run it with every setting maxed out and I never experience a drop in performance (unless some background task starts up).
A couple of lessons though:
Make sure your video card drivers are up to date (we had issues with this at first). Sound card drivers too are good to have updated, but I don't think anyone in the beta had trouble with it, but you might as well do it. There might be specific mobo/chipset related issues, which might require a BIOS update (only if you know how to do it).
Some of you will get much greater performance if you get newer video cards. You don't have to get anything past a GF2 I'll bet. 16MB video cards are sooooo 90s.
DX 9b should be distributed with the SESF disk (its free to MM to do so) so if you have a slow download speed, don't worry too much.

As for computer parts, I shop Newegg.com exclusively. They have great selection and good prices.
Pricewatch is good, but shipping can add up if you buy parts from more than 2 vendors.

To be more specific, when I started the beta test I had a PII-300A Celeron with 320Mb RAM and 16MB TNT videocard. It ran playable ok under Win98, but when I switched to XP, it was super slow.

I'd recommend at least a PIII with a decent videocard at the least.

Edit:
SJ - I had the slowest machine!

I'm not even going to ask why you had more RAM than CPU speed. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif

And with that system, switching to XP slowed everything down, I assume.

It is always good to have as much ram as you can get. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif

With XP the system performed about the same for most normal tasks, but more importantly was much more stable! Unfortunately not for Star Fury though. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/tongue.gif

I'm using ME.
So far my system crashes only when I'm notplaying Starfury http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif

I'm hoping to upgrade to Win98 when my replacement harddrive comes back from Maxtor.

Came with my PC, which, along with procrastination, is why I'm using it now.

WinME you mean? Its not a good OS. Either go back to Win98SE or upgrade to XP.
Anyways, DX Version support really depends. If MM wanted to, he could make it DX6 compatible or whatever (the interface for it is super modular, garunteed backwards compatibility). I'd bet DX8 will run it, but like I said, DX9b will probably be distrubed on the disk.

gregebowman
September 10th, 2003, 02:28 PM
Well, I also have ME, and I'm not paying $100 for the XP (at least right now). But I've had no problem running software so far, so hopefully this won't be a problem.

Instar

You should be good to go with WinME, I just have a very negative opinion overall about it. I have gotten spoiled by XP pro's awesomeness.
I just had a random thought. People tried using SEIV in Linux using Wine. IIRC, it did not work 100% correctly. SESF probably will not work at all in a WINE environment, as Linux cannot run DX without a serious (and probably illegal) porting of DX, COM, etc..
