hi all.
with fond memories of star raiders on the atari2600, i eagerly downloaded the demo. but i can only get as far as creating the campaign...it tries to load the sound effects, and crashes with a "floating point division by zero" error. gleaning what info i could off the website, it looks like a problem with my soundcard (an audigy 1). so i reinstalled the latest drivers...but the demo still crashes! my other specs:
win98se
directx 9.0b
amd winxp 1600+ chip
geforce4 ti4200 w/128 (45.23 drivers)
i'm also running norton anti-virus as well...will try running the demo without it loaded, just in case. will post here when i i get results from that attempt at trouble shooting http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif any help would be much appreciated!

just a post-script...
disabled norton anti-virus, just in case that was my problem. still crashes. i'm trying to run the demo with hardware t&l enabled, using default display driver, at 1024x768x32 (which is what my desktop is at), with everything set at high. i did try monkeying around with these settings, but still get the CTD.

I'm not so good at troubleshooting, but a few ideas:

-Try putting the Video Memory Usage to 'Safe' mode.
-I'm not sure if you can, but try turning off the sound effects before you start a campaign.
-Try making sure you have the latest drivers installed for your video card.

Some of these don't have anything to do with the sound effects, but I don't know anything else to suggest. From the problems other people have had, I'd say those may be your best bet. Hope this helps.

Try upgrading your sound drivers. For some reason, SF has issues with older sound drivers (well, more like SF's implementation of the DirectSound API, but whatever)

Your video drivers are not the latest with Version 45.xx. The latest are 50.xx or something. To get the latest sound driver you have to download them from www.creative.com. (http://www.creative.com.) Don't use the ones that come with Windows nor these that are available from windowsupdate.

actually mephisto the 45.23 ARE the latest "official" drivers from nvidia...i guess i could always go beta, but i try not to (especially since i'm still using win98se). as for the sound driver issue, i am using the latest ones for the audigy (dated jan21/02) off creative's website. so i'm kinda at a loss here as to what to do...

This may sound strange, but you want to try backing up one Version on your video drivers (to 44.03, I believe). I had to do that to make Disney's Toontown (no snide remarks, please http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif ) stable on my system. According to their tech support, the newest nVidia drivers have some issues.

We misunderstood each other. We are both right. The 45.23 are the latest drivers, for Win98. The latest drivers for W2k/XP are 52.16. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif
