AoW 2 taugth me a bitter lesson, "ALWAYS PLAY THE DEMO!".

I waded right in and preordered. Nerfix, your rule is sound but Illwinter is an exception for me. These people are "in tune" with my game preferences.

I'm going to loose myself in the Silent Storm demo and UFO Aftermath (ordered UK Version shipped to US) to pass the time faster.

Yes, yes, IW is exception, but i realy want to test EVERY game i am planning to buy.
For my own idealism. I don't want to be a hypocrite.

I'd not be too worried about grabbing Dom2 before the demo is out.

Unless the betatesters are from the same group that betatested MoO3 I don't think there's much to worry about http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif

Also saving $5 is never a bad thing...

Nerflix: I have that policy for buying cds - I don't buy it until I've tried it out - but I make exceptions in the case of my favourite bands, because I know they create music I like. That's how I view Dom II - I've tried out Dom I pretty extensively, and I have some faith in the Illwinter team - especially as they're not so much trying something new as making something that we're familiar with much better.

Well, i have no point even making any attemps to order the game before my birthday(18th October).
Not everybody gets Visa cards at age of three or 14 or 15 if you get what i am saying...

at least your birthday isn't on april http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif
maybe the demo would be at the same level as for DOM-I.
that demo was great. it took me a few failed attempts to get past the gfx and UI to discover a real gem.

I preordered it a couple of weeks ago. Even though it will cost me @ $70-80 after shipping and the currency exchange. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon9.gif And this was only after playing the DomI demo for a week.

What can I say? A game this good must be snatched up regardless of the material cost. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif

So how much will total cost be to someone in Finland? €45 (or €40 with preorder) for the game, and how much for shipping? I hate it when Online stores don't post any obvious links to their shipping policies or info about themselves that would allow the customer to learn where they're based, who runs them and so forth. Gamersfront was just like that, no obvious (or from what I could see, even inobvious) links to such info. I tend to boycott operations like that on principle.

gamers front was pretty clear : you have either a 9$ cost, or a 18$ for the express mode.

it is also clearly written that the card is charged as soon as they get your command, and not when they deliver the game.

ordered 2 copies http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif

Edi<font size="2" face="sans-serif, arial, verdana">'twas $ 11.46, and this is a quote from my "Order update notification."
BTW, the shipping cost is selected from a drop-down menu, then clicking a button next to it. Brings up a popup. This is from memory as right now I'm too lazy to check. If it helps, I got there from Shrapnel's product page -> Dom 2 -> order now. Quite painless and intuitive, actually.

plz, correct me if I'm wrong.

I will play with the demo, until the modding tools will be released. Once they are out, I will order the game.

Preordered. I liked Dominions, and just as importantly I liked the degree of support that Illwinter gave in terms of listening to the Users. A game as complex as this is almost certain to have balance issues, so listening is important...

Heh. I don't think I've visited this forum since my SE IV days. It's weird to be back.

I preorder at the (almost) Last minute before it starts costing more. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif

Umm add item to cart and then hit shipping quote http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif .

Seriously we can't do it until you add it to your cart because different products cost different prices to ship.

Fairly easy.

I OWN ALL THESE GAMES!!! I WISH I DIDN'T!!! That's about US$280 down the drain.

In this case, since DOM:II is the same game engine with a graphical and UI overhaul, and more units... I should feel confident pre-ordering. But then, I felt confident pre-ordering MOO3, and it took a lot of willpower to say, "No! I'll wait for the reviews." And I'm glad I didn't buy it! Of course, I also waited for the reviews on SC3, SS2, and HOMMIV, and they were positive... but many reviewers are completely incompetent (not always their fault - I used to be a reviewer for a major newspaper - you are forced to rush to judgement).

What can I say... I will buy Half-Life 2 and Deus Ex 2 regardless of whether there are demos, even though I know the reviews will be inaccurate. But I will never pre-order another game, unless I get a 50%+ discount.

You didn't like System Shock 2? Are you absolutely sure that you were playing "System Shock 2" as opposed to, say, "Scooby Doo: Showdown in Ghost Town?"? The names may be phonetically similiar but believe me, the game underneath is totally different.

System Shock 2 wasn't... bad...

In fact, it was very scary at times. But it was not nearly as good as the original. I would say that the only advantages of SS2 over SS1 are the graphics and modern FPS-style control. These are big advantages, but SS1 had much better gameplay, music, and immersion - so it's no contest.

I'd agree with everything else you said Saber...but although I've sadly never played System Shock I must think system shock 2 was certainly better than almost anything else in the genra for quite a period of time. Playing it at night on impossible makes me really scared when i hear monkeys or protocal droids or anything. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif

If you can get it to run on a modern computer, check it out! System Shock was the best "FPS" ever, and the game that made Warren Spector famous. True, playing SS2 at night and hearing a monkey go "eee-eee-eee" somewhere in the distance was pretty scary... but SS1, after the first time I tried it, and almost got a heart attack, I simply couldn't play at night. And that was on Level 1 (medical)... and my friend was with me!

If you liked SS2, and can live with worse graphics... SS1 is an absolute must. The magnitude of difference is similar to Master of Magic versus games that tried to be MoM2, or X-COM versus any of its sequels. Oh - if at all possible, go for the CD Version, which has full speech (tons and tons of audio logs, etc). That stuff is REALLY freaky.

-Cherry

P.S.

Let me phrase it this way: SS2 was a great game that impressed everyone who played it - unless they had played SS1.

For anybody who still wants to catch the pre-release special price, I procrastinated in my usual way, but discovered that the $39.95 is still valid this morning http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif
