so for I know of 3 terrains which has an effect:
land
sea
forest
forest is used when checking for faery trod.
aside these 3, does some others exists which have an effect?
also, in tac combat, is terrain used? I recall that the screenshots show a forest, but in the background, so it seems combat always take place in open terrain (aside when assaulting a fortress!)

Mountain range, blocks ground movement.

In Doms I, there is a slight terrain effect in tactical combat from terrain obstacles, such as trees, but they were quite minor. It would be neat to be able to fight in a forest (lots of cover against arrows, and less advantage from numbers since trees and bushes would reduce the ability to gang up).
I thought the province type influenced the scales (for example, heat/cold), which in turn has big effects on combat, though, although a dominion can shift that dramatically.

I like the idea of mountains restricting or slowing down land movement.
