These have a somewhat higher point cost and can't easily be made into "rainbow mages." Does anyone else use them?

I like the idea of being able to go and support and cast spells in domain and not worry if I die or not. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif I'm using the phoenix with abyssia, and I think it rocks. Though I perhaps should have chosen some sort of lich or vampire queen to go with the theme.

It's just kind of funny to watch your pretender die and then reappear at the capital the following turn ready to go again. (I also like having him in the hall of fame with the "dead" mark next to him even though he is very much alive.)

I've only toyed with them, though I didn't use them to their full potential. I'm always too tempted to leave them at home researching, rather then sending them out for their risk free deaths.

I can see them being very useful if handled correctly.

One thing I have found with my phoenix (has awe), is that I can send him solo into a province that has heavy cavalry independents.

He will rout these. And they make it off the board (destroyed) before the rest of the units kill the phoenix. The phoenix shall rise again. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif
