View Full Version : New MWF Network Game Starting
Zapmeister
November 25th, 2003, 07:39 AM
The game will run on Argitoth's 24/7 server, IP 68.98.86.49 port 1111. Nation allocation is on a first-come first-served basis. To join the game,
1. Design your pretender
2. Connect to the server/port above
3. Choose your nation (if it's not already taken)
4. Disconnect
On Sat Nov 29 at 1:00 AM GMT, I'll start the game if we have 6 or more starters. I'll choose a map appropriate for the number of signups, and use the default settings except for:
Independants: 6
Magic sites: 50
Victory for controlling about 60% of the map's provinces.
Hope to see you there...
Edit: Don't forget to password your pretender.

When joining is server, it is strongly recommended that you create a new shortcut and use the following command line:
--tcpclient --ipadr # --port # --nonationsel
EXAMPLE: "C:\Program Files\Dominions 2\dom2.exe" --tcpclient --ipadr 68.98.86.49
--port 1111 --nonationsel
That way, everything is automated. As soon as you double-click, you will enter the correct server.. If you don't know how to use command lines, heres how (for windows Users).
1. create shortcut
2. right click, select properties
3. in the target field, enter commands after the quotations (which is for the shortcut target)
Here are more detailed steps:
1. Create a shortcut of Dominions2.exe by right-clicking on Dominion2 and selecting SHORTCUT.
2. Place the shortcut where you feel is comfortable. I personally put servers in the STARTUP folder in START --> PROGRAMS --> STARTUP so that the server starts up after I restart my computer.
3. Right-click on your new shortcut and click RENAME. I name servers/clients based on the IP it uses.
4. Right-click on the shortcut again and click PROPERTIES.
5. In the TARGET field of the SHORTCUT tab should say, "C:\Program Files\Dominions 2\dom2.exe".
All you do is type the commands outside of the quotations.
6. You may string the shortcuts of the commands together, for example: -ismwqxxx. Put spaces
and dashes inbetween anything else.
7. The next step is optional. You may place a comment in the COMMENT field to record more information of the client/server. In the comments field, I usually put the ip address.

Curiously, I followed these instructions to the letter, but it didn't work. Double-clicking the shortcut just left me with a selected shortcut. Hmmm.

What windows Version do you use? I use XP.
There SHOULD be a Target field somewhere...
Zapmeister
November 25th, 2003, 07:57 AM
The target field exists and contains the string:
C:\games\dominions2\dom2.exe --tcpclient --ipaddr 68.98.86.49 --port 1111 --nonationsel
I run Windows 98, and I'm sure I've had this sort of thing working before ... http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon9.gif

If I put in double quotes, Windows takes them out when I Apply. If I use single quotes, I get application not found.

You have two Ds in 'ipaddr'
You should have 1 D!

D'oh! One D it is. Works now.

Forget it, theres no way I'm running the server like this.
No one has replied. I have no idea who these people are and I have no idea when they play their turns. I also found out Last night that 1 MB of RAM is actually about 20... so I cannot run more than two servers.
NOTE TO SELF: Only announce games on Dominions X.

Sorry folks - game cancelled. Argitoth is understandably uncomfortable about running a server with anonymous players (something I was actually looking forward to, but then it's not my machine).
I'm still interested in playing in an anonymous game, though, if anyone is prepared to run it.

We can try this again if you like. I still have everyone's pretender. Whoever joined so far, reply here stating which nation you were going to play.
I will re-load the server and those who have responded by this exact time TOMMORROW night (8:00pm EST) will be able to play.
Nations which have been chosen:
C'tis: Replied
Machaka: Replied
R'lyeh: Replied
Jotunheim: Replied
Pythium: Replied
T'ien Ch'i: Replied

Ok, SERVER UP!!
Sorry guys, next time I wont be so conserned. I'll run an annonymous-player server after this one. That means anyone joins without responding.
I'm already monitoring 2 server games, so this server will be under no management except a simple "Next Turn" announcement. If anyone else would like to take this job, feel free.

Izaq... when are you going to take your turn? Is it the corrupted file again?
WraithLord
November 27th, 2003, 12:13 PM
My timezone is GMT+2.
I can send turns once per day.
If you want to move at a faster pace please find a replacment for me.
Oh, and I got a strange message in the game from pythium (my nation), also I saw that the orderd I gave were changed.
I would like to know what is that all about.
WraithLord

Oh, I just checked and it seems as though someone else is playing pythium in my stead.
I think this should be straighted up before we go any further.

I totaly agree.
Please don't spoil the fun of other players or force us to use passwords.

There are two reasons for this: With no password protection, it is possible for somebody to log into your nation by accident - for example if they forgot which nation they were in which game, and were Pythium in one net game but Ulm in another, and neither were password-protected...
Second, there are always untrustworthy people, and they may not even be people in the game (just random people that found the ip/port).
So, I think that the "confusion" possiblity is more likely, and as such, even if everyone is completely honest, it's best to use passwords to prevent mistakes and hard feelings.

I have no problem with it being cancelled. It doesn't look like the Jotunheim player is playing anymore either.

I kind of want to cancel it. The game is going very slow and I feel a lot of people are just tired of logging in a million times a day checking if the next turn has gone.

I'd like to continue if possible. I think it will move a lot faster if we stop waiting for Jotunheim.

I wish to cancel the game.
My turns aren't password protected and every time I give orders they are being change. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon8.gif
I will not make that mistake a second time, but this game is lost to me.
As for the pace, I can't commit to more then one turn per day.
Therefore I don't want to participate in games that requires a faster pace.

A turn a day is fine with me as well, and that's about the speed that the game would go with the current players, I think.
May I suggest that we simply start again. That would give us the opportunity to use the settings I originally nominated for the game, and perhaps to gather a couple more players that want to play at about one turn per day (?)

OK, well assuming the server's operator (Argitoth) is in agreement, I declare the current game aborted, to be restarted on the same port in a couple of days. I will top-post an announcement for the new game now.
