What about some hunter spider riders refills? I can't manage to keep them alive for long, no matter what I try.
I mean, the spiders alone are nice (and not have to spend any money with support a good bonus), but the combination of the two that is truly lethal.

Air & water blessing effects? You get pretty much all other magic paths on your mages, so having those on your pretender might not be such a bad idea.

The hunter spider defense is too low to start with (11), so water won't help much. Air is nice, but managing a good air shielding (40-60%) is kinda expensive if you are trying to have nature nine (extra protection and regeneration does wonders to the ridderless spider.
You have a point about the magic paths, though.

The spiders are already way too strong, IMHO.
Machaka doesn't really have to build anything but those, and they rip through most opposition.

If you are feeling excessive you could try Earth Mother earth9, nature9. This works well though you lose the occassional rider. For a more aggressive approach try the Lord of the Desert Sun with fire9, nature9.

Hunter spiders got mr5, 'nuff said. They're good for early expansion but will get fudged over by magic later.

Being able to reequip the war lobsters, various spiders, and so forth would be a nice addition. Maybe a good mechanic would be to have an unridden "mount" in the province consumed when recruiting that unit type and having a 50% reduction in unit cost for its replacement in exchange.

Damn! I haven't noticed the low MR. Even with a drain dominion and astral bless bonus their MR is too low to be safe. Another reason to get some riders refills http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif
