Any chance of that happening still? Last I read they were waiting on the Solaris Version.

That and the fact that Illwinter had major downtime. 3 different events. Problems with 2 seperate machines AND their ISP.

Looks like our christmas present patch will be arriving late.
That would suck if all the patches were being held back because the Solaris Version wasn't ready. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon9.gif

Please excuse my ignorance, but what system is Solaris? I am sure Dominions is a big hit with Solaris Users, as it may be the only game in the world which runs on the system!
More seriously, I wonder what percentage of Dominions players use Solaris and if the patch is being held up so that it can be applicable to all systems? At the risk of offending those on the Solaris system, I would put forth the Window-centric argument that the majority of the paying customers should not have to wait for updates, if the delay is caused by the other systems. Could individual patches be put out for each operating system? Not only would this allow each segment of the population to get their patch as soon as it was done, but it would also reduce the size of the download for those of us with poor connections. Also, if Windows is the problem, the other systems do not have to wait for us!
In any case, I am not a programmer and it is Christmas, so the Illwinter folks may just be on a well deserved vacation. I just thought I would throw in my thoughts

And if someone is in several MP games, they might have to keep an unpatched game and several patched ones...
If one person in a thousand is using Solaris, but that person is playing MP, all their opponents will suffer if an incomplete patch is released.

IMHO that is a weak argument, not enough to stop releasing the patch for the systems that are ready.Thats how it works with other games (for example, the ones with different language Versions).
Anyway i hope we are waiting for technical problems of Illwinter being resolved, not for the Solaris patch.

Solaris is Unix. Solaris is more likely to be what your internet providor is running on than windows, mac or linux. There may be few players using solaris operating systems but many servers.
I know that isnt a good answer but its more aimed at "what is solaris" than why they are included.

But still, I think the main reason is more likely to be the technical problems of Illwinter, as supposingly, patch for all but one OS is fixed. There is no reason not to just release the patches for all but one.
As for why Solaris is included in the supported platform, I think the reason is because it's easy enough to do. I beleive the program uses OpenGL for graphic, a library available on all Unices (I know of) - and Windows. If you can support Linux or MacOS X, I guess Solaris is probably one or two compiles away. It's easy enough to do just for a matter of principle, or bragging-right - how many game can claim to run on four major OS platforms http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif !

You might sing a different tune if you were playing on a Solaris instead of whatever platform you are using.
I'm sure that it will get here when it will get here. If they didn't have problems this point would be moot and people foaming at the mouth to get whatever part of the patch they want most, would have them.

If you were a Solaris player, you would prefer to make all the other Version players just to sit waiting until the Solaris Version is done? IMHO thats selfish.I prefer the others enjoying if they have the chance, and wait my turn http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif

And yes, a couple of weeks ago they said that the patch release was delayed because Solaris Version. But i suppose that the problems now are more technical....and christmas http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif

If Dominions II true is truly SDL only then they should wait until all Versions have been tested. There is probably only one code branch with little specialisation for different platforms. Often if one platform breaks it is not due to specific code, but due to a logic flaw which was more obvious on one platform than another. The work to maintain separate branches would slow further developement. So even though I really want to see the patch I am willing to wait patiently.
