Excuse me if this has been posted, but I just received the new (February) issue of Computer Games magazine and it has a rave review of Dominions II. I had never heard of the game -- this is my first time here (I've been to Shrapnel forum for other games, tho) and this review prompted me to check out the game.

The magazine gives Dom II 4.5/5 stars and an "Editor's Choice" award. Tom Chick wrote the review. Here are two excerpts that I transcribed (its not Online):

This is a smart, complex game that's bold enough to be demanding, unique and occasionally clunky, all in the service of being as epic as fantasy should be.<font size="2" face="sans-serif, arial, verdana"> It serves as a reminder that truly great games don't require big publishers and big budgets. They simply require imaginative developers with focused ideas and the confidence and intelligence to translate them into games like this.<font size="2" face="sans-serif, arial, verdana">So congrats. As a long-time fan of turn-based strategy, I look forward to trying it out. I will download the demo tonight!

Coolness!

I'm going to stop by today and see if there's a copy on the newstands yet. I remember Mr. Chick was actively gathering info, asking questions, and so forth with the proto-manual even before the game was published. It's great to see a reviewer really doing his homework, and the fact he really likes the game after digging so deeply into it is even better! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif

And not only did Tom Chick do his homework, but the magazine editors clearly were hot on this, because they devoted one and 2/3 pages to the review, with a huge screenshot. That's more space than they give some high profile games.

Thanks for posting that. Its great to know about things like that.

I was considering posting a note that Alexa shows a large increase in traffic and linkages to www.illwinter.com (http://www.illwinter.com) but it didnt seem worth noting all by itself.

Now I wonder what this review will do to their poor overworked web site. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif

Excellent! Always nice to see something other than eye-candy occupying the pages of a major gaming mag. Dom II is certainly deserving.

Related to this, in CGW this month Tom Chick and Bruce G play a game of Dominions 2 in that end of the mag section.

Thanks for posting this info guys. Good to hear there is a gaming magizine out there that can recognise qualtiy in other than slick graphics. I too will be keeping an eye on GGW from now on - I already knew Dominons rocks and now I know CGW know how to review.

Cheers

The CGW review is also a Editor Choice, they just accidentally didn't print it. We got a note from the editors yesterday. A retraction is forth coming.

I am confused???? IS CGW and "Computer Games" two different magazines or are they the same??? I have "Computer Games" and the "Editor Choice" is printed on the review.. Also there is no article at the end about people playing the game?????

The other magazine is called Computer Gaming World.

Yes, Computer Games (aka CG), and Computer Gaming World (aka CGW) are similar magazines, both excellent, and often confused for each other. The CGW review (4.5 stars, by Bruce Geryk) is on page 67 of their Feb 04 issue (and a game between Bruce and Tom Chick is on pages 120-122 of the same issue), the CG review (4.5 stars, by Tom Chick) is on pages 82-83 of their Feb 04 issue. The CGW articles are what prompted me to download the demo, fall in love with the game almost instantly, order it a week ago, receive it 3 days ago and lose much sleep ever since. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/shock.gif

It doesn't help confusion-avoidance that Tom Chick, who's reviews I think are great, writes for both. He also lurks in these forums. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/tongue.gif

I ran to 4 different software stores in my area after I recieved my CGW in the mail. The AAR actually made me really want this game. I really really wish they would let the readers know if we have to order it Online to get a particular game. It would have saved me a lot of gas money.

I think that right now I will call the local computer stores and let them know that in case they are getting pestered. All of us should.

Sammual [/QB]<font size="2" face="sans-serif, arial, verdana">Yeah I knew that. But it was also a good thought that if other people are running around the stores and the poor sales people are saying "never heard of Dominions" that they might appreciate abit of info.

Id like to buy more copies to help Illwinter out but I cant right now. This is another way I can toss some $$$ in the pot toward a Dominions 3. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif
