Ok, I just saw this on the mercenary screen:

Gote is a mage who commands 20 men and demands 320 pounds of gold for employment
(Demands 160 pounds of gold for employment by most other nations)

What the heck is that?? Why am I getting charged more? Where is the Sage bureau of fair bidding or whoever takes care of that? Or more specifically.....why am I being charged more than "most other nations"?

Gote is a death oriented merc and is probably cheaper for compatible nations.

The mercs now have personal prejudices. Not real strong ones since they can be overcome by gold (they ARE mercs after all)

If you are Pangaea you are really hurting since nearly all the mercs hate you. So far as I can find, only the big giant guy who hires by himself likes Pangaea.

Yep, try buying the Legion Of The Damned as Marignon... I'd clearly love a death mage among my retinue for a short while, but not for 460 gold...
