Here's two of mine:
Take a black hawk commander from that spell 'call of winds' and give him one of those exploding amulets.
have him attack enemy archers and watch 5 or so fall dead... if you're lucky you'll take a commander too.
an assassin with:
sandals of the crane (blinking around on map)
bottle of living water (water elemental)
ethereal crossbow (soul slay)
luck charm (luck... just in case)

I love giving scouts bows of war and eyes of aiming, really saves on upkeep instead of normal archers.

The scout bow of war is a nice tatic. Not so useful but very entertaining was my super fire bola warrior I made once. It was a harbringer with 2 fire bolas, boots of quickness, girdle of strength and bear talisman. Not so practical but still really entertaining to have 4 attacks/round at pretty good range, accuracy, and damage that also imprison in flame. And one handed ranged weapons just tempt me. Although the time I gave a quicknessed nataraja 2 bows of war was good too...52 arrows a turn. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif
And on a more practical note I love stocking mound kings with 2 fever fetishes each. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif

I'm rather attached to the super-empowered Nataraja: 10 all paths, Faithful, Charcoal Shield, Ember, Mage Bane, Spirit Helmet, Robe of Invulnerability or Rainbow Armor, Boots of Calius, and an Antimagic Amulet or Resilience. Sure, it's totally unreasonable, costwise, but it sure can lay out the smackdown.

I like taking an undead unit (vampires are nice, but stuff like Bane Lord works too) and giving it:
Snake Bladder Stick
Lucky Coin
Wraith Crown (mainly for the ethereal, so maybe something else for undead that're already ethereal)
Bone Armour
Boots of Stone
Ring of Regen
Amulet of Antimagic or Lycanthropy (for the regen, never experienced any negative effects from this item so far).
The undead aspect makes them immune to all the poison they spray around with the snake bladder and if they're flying they get straight into close range immediately, the luck + ethereal + boots of stone keep their hp loss relatively low, while the regen ring + area effect life drain bone armour keep them healed up.
Not sure they do so great one vs one and the bone armour + wraith crown are quite pricey, but they cut a swathe through most oversized AI armies.

Djinn + Living water bottle.
A B2 bomber..
Teleport-Phoenix Power-Flame Storm-Flame Storm-Returning. A few ruby & pearl cost, better effect than Flame from the sky(For a aerial defence-lack huge army, this process will kill 100+ units and some commanders at best)

There's a Demonbred national hero who's an assassin with stealth +25, if memory serves, and Abysia shouldn't have that much trouble getting the gems for a Rod of the Phoenix. Then get him Boots of Quickness and Spirit Helm for Lightning Bolt + Incinerate + Incinerate every turn.
