I just started a new game server:
address: 209.157.135.121
port: 10001
map: The Desert Eye
Please do not start the game. I will start the game when we have enough players (at least 8).
It's running with "quick host", so as soon as all the turns are in, it hosts.
If you leave the game, please make yourself computer controlled!

--tcpserver --port 10001 --noclientstart -iqsmwxxx [FileName goes here]
use the above command line for your server. it will make EVERYTHING a lot easier. It also fixes how players can press start.

and view my command line switch guide if you want to learn more. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon6.gif
If you start a server like this without making anyone respond to the thread before joining, you will really have a hard time getting people to take their turns. in my experience, you gotta be organized to run a successful, smooth going server. I suggest you add a short description like "You must reply and check back at this thread regularly."
also, you might want to state at which times the server is force hosted. if you don't you will have players not taking their turn and causing everyone to wait for them.

Argitoth is an experienced host and his advice on these matters is worth noting. In particular, he's right about people dropping out. There are a huge number of people out there that will cheerfully sign up, play a couple of turns, then walk away from a game without a word, without going to computer control, nothing. The option of force-hosting at a known time is indispensable. The recently-added master password can also help with this.

I've upped my Pythium pretender.
Small note tho, Comandante Loko has caused some incompability problems in previous games becouse he has a... less than legal copy http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/tongue.gif

My mighty and almost totally undefeated (except for all the other games she's been in) pretender goddess of Man who is in fact a Woman is uploaded.
Tremble in fear.

The untested, yet frightening in potential, god of Arcos is loaded.

sorry for my silence.
The problem that I've found with running with the "noclientstart" option is that then no one can start the game, since I'm running the server with the "-T" option, since its remote and I can't have a window open on it. If you know a way around this, I'm very interested. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif
So I will use my masterpass magic to make players computer controlled if they don't take their turns in a timely manner.
Anyway, I'm going to start this game now, so hold on to your hats!

Ack! For some stupid reason, now I can't connect to my own nation (Ermor), but I can connect to other nations with the master password. Geesh. I wish the command-line interface was better than it is!

oops, I just realized that I wasn't in this game as Ermor, but as Marignon. D'oh! Nonetheless, the master password doesn't seem to work, so if someone drops out of the game, I can only force host: I can't make them computer controlled.

So what's the deal with schedule? Are you going to have a set time when the server runs, or just set it to quick-host?
Are you shooting for X number of turns per day?
I probably should have asked these questions before I joined, I suppose...
Zachariah

I have it set for quick host, but I'll force host after two or so days if people don't take their turns.

Zachariah, i've emailed you my pretender. I set a wrong password and know i can't play my turn. You have to replace the atlantis.2h you have with the one i sended in order to take my turn.

Server seems to be down. Has the first turn been completed?

I can connect to the server. We are waiting for me to take my turn (Atlantis), but i can do nothing unless Zachariah puts my correct .2h file in the game folder.
Sorry.

Hmm, I just dont see how putting a different .2h file in the game folder will help. The first turn has already been generated by the host. I cant imagine how you could do a valid turn without connecting to the actual pretender..

I'm going to force host this evening (in 10 hours or so). There are some folk who dropped without becoming computer controlled.

You can put down the other server now, I've beaten everyone exept the computer, and thats just a matter of playing the game. but as it in effect would be a single player game from now on, im not going to bother http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/tongue.gif
Also, perhaps we should restart without the dropouts? they can be a pretty disruptive force in the game, and we're still in the beginning.
Zachariah

I'd rather not restart. Its just another element of chance. At least there's 2 of them, so that evens things a little.

I just forced hosted again. I'll set the timer for two days (in case I miss it), but if every human gets their turn in, I'll host.
See you on the battlefield!
