View Full Version : Marathon Game: Takers?

Norfleet

I'm pondering the starting of a marathon game: Illwinter's World map, non-scenario Version. None of that sissy PBEM 1 turn a day stuff, no snivelling about "having a life". Game runs start-to-finish, from kickoff to the Last man standing, breaks only for food: Sleep is for wimps.

Have a dedicated hoster lined up already.

Any takers?

Could you please propose those at the beginning of a weekend, not at the end of it. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif

In three weeks (next week is an important birthday, the week after that is the german boardgaming team-championship), I'd be game. On a moderatley sized map, at least.

40 hours nonstop playing is nothing. *cough*

Meh. I figure it'll be at least a week before we get enough victims. I haven't set a kickoff date yet anyway.

Besides, as a retired hermit living in the equivalent of a hole in the ground, I don't have a good fix on what day it is at any point anyway, and my only bearing on what constitutes night and day is the activity level on the Internet sites I'm at.

All enormously huge maps *ARE* moderately sized. They're always too small at the beginning, and too big at the end. That averages out to be moderately sized, yes?

And birthdays, pah! I despise birthdays. It took forever to break my friends of that annoying habit, where they would always send me junk and expect that I should do the same. So annoying! You'd think that as an adult, you'd learn to buy your own crap. It's so much easier when you don't have to worry about what somebody might actually want, and just let them buy their own stuff.

Food breaks? Isn't your fridge and microwave next to your computer?
I would be interested. I could play almost any weekend.

I'm sure interested in enhancing my sleep disorder, where do I sign up?

if you don't mind a new player i would be interested

Awwright! We got 4 or 5 victims now. What time do you folks want to hold kickoffs, and does anyone have a national preference of sorts? I'm currently leaning a tad towards Ermor again...burnination is just so much fun.

Okey dokey. Is this good for all of our takers? If so, I'll have him bring up the server so we can begin the sign-in.

Ulm will be fine. So now we've got a Pythium, and Ulm, and an Ermor. Still waiting on the rest of the sign-ins.

Okay, for anyone participating in the Marathon, the server will be brought up and sign-ins will commence at 0100 MST tonight, which is 3.5 hours from present posting. Feel free to connect to upload your God any time between then and kickoff.

Server: kludgemush.com (12.221.73.107), port 10811.

Everyone fights! No one quits!

i don't know about anyone else but saturday is valentines day, not taking my wife out could result in a premature death of my pc. Is it possible to work a break 7-11pm est on saturday night? if not i will have to withdrawl from the game, although i would very much want to take part in the next one

It is clear to me that you have married the wrong person, however. *I* would certainly never have anything to do with anyone who would pester me about an annoying, silly holiday like that. That's a disqualifying mark right there.

As a reminder, please make sure you've passworded your god, so random passers-by and other players do not go about traisping through your stuff. That would be a Bad Thing.

Also, make sure you've downloaded the Earth map tga from Illwinter, as well as Catquiet's Caelum fix, in case anyone wants to play Caelum.

Holidays are purely sentimental silliness. Really, everyone would be better off if they ignored them, and it would save a lot of money and time.

Besides, everyone knows Dominions II is totally superior to any holiday.

And hey, I'm not purely unsentimental. I'm actually rather partial to things like like fire, and burning, and people being horribly and gruesomely killed. But I try not to let that interfere with anything.

Alas gone are the days where I could give up so much time to an endevor such as this. Honestly I can't even see myself wanting to give up that much time in a single block for a game, but even if I did want to, I still couldn't...

Maybe during the summer I could do it, but frigging dial up only at home usually causes enough pains in the @#$# for me to give up on trying anything like this before I start http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/tongue.gif

You don't think this is the BEST GAME YOU'VE EVER PLAYED?!? Surely that can't be what you mean, that would be outright blasphemy. You wouldn't even want to dedicate a huge block of time for such a clearly awesome game? Just goes to show what I've been saying about people and shortened attention span these days. In about 20 years, the only things that'll sell will be Quake XVI clones. Bah!

I very much hope to be happily dead by the time things get that bad.

As to 20hour (or longer) time blocks... well those for me simply don't exist anymore, and its nothing to do with my attention span, more to do with the other things in life that are more important (blasphemy! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif ) to me than any computer game ever will be. Hey I used to easilly give up weekends for nonstop D&D or board gaming (is my age showing? http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/tongue.gif ) but those days are past, fondly remembered, and maybe relived later on, but for right now... yeah, I don't want them back http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif

I'm absolutely certain I'm older than you are. It's just that I realized early on the annoyance and aggravation of being permanently hogtied to somebody else, and have elected to pursue my own path. I find it quite liberating. After all, they say a man doesn't know what true happiness is until he's married....and then it's too late!

No problemmo. Pangaea's open. Just sign in and upload. Do remember to password. This is a multiplayer network game, after all.

Remember: This is a Marathon. We play more or less nonstop, except for a brief break because Condors wanted to sacrifice a few goats to his wife so she doesn't smite him.

Okay ladies. T minus 2:30 to kickoff. Pangaea has not signed in yet. We might have to pronounce them AWOL. Turnout not as impressive as I had hoped for. And it looks like the patch won't make it in time.

Everyone ready?

Pangea has signed in. 4 players so far, on the world map

Norfleet
February 13th, 2004, 09:41 PM
Alrighty. 13 minutes to launch. Please make sure at this time that you have downloaded Illwinter's Earth map, in world.zip, from illwinter.com.

We seem to be Caelum-less, so the Caelum mod won't be necessary.

Navrunner/Pythium has not checked in yet. Although the game *IS* set for his schedule, he hasn't checked in on the thread yet. Maybe he'll make it.

Lastly, if anyone's starting position is absolutely intolerable, such as getting stranded on a no-exit-without-naval access island, call for a mulligan here early, while I still have the server guy on ytalk.

Norfleet
February 13th, 2004, 09:48 PM
Server operator informs me that since everyone has checked in, he has launched the game.

Please inspect your starting locations and inform me if your starting position ended up being in New Zealand or something, and you can't leave so are hosed, and need a mulligan.

Let the games begin! Victory or death!

And that's the game.

Maybe I'll schedule the next game to run at fixed hours instead of marathon-style. This will be my umpteenth victory-by-endurance, which by far outnumber my victory-by-total-crushification-of-opposition count.

February 14th, 2004, 11:14 AM
Maybe you should play some blitz games. There the winner is determined by both drunkeness, misclicks, and some smattering of strategy ;P

I figure a typical Dominions II game from start to finish tends to run me about a day, and I take my turns faster than most people: I can avoid coming in dead Last on the turn clock while playing Ermor, which is surely the most micromanagement-laden nation.

Okay, Mictlan was pretty bad, too, until I found a number of shortcuts and discovered that you can sacrifice blood slaves out of a lab. Woo.
