What does this sword do? I see "Will of the Fates" in the MIQR description but what is that? And more importantly, does it merit the whopping 80 Astral cost?

It curses the wielder (more likely to acquire battle affliction), but allows every other friendly unit in combat to be Lucky (each hit against Lucky unit has 50% of not doing damage. Including hits of magical nature)

Some info on Will of Fates,
- Level 8 Alteration
- Level 4 Astral
- Fatigue Cost 400-
- Require 4 Astral Pearl per casting
- Duration: entire battle.

So if you find that being Lucky can win you battles with much better odds and casualty rate, this is not a bad investment (just put it on a commander you don't mind to be cursed). Situation where this may be true is when you have limited/weak troops and your enemy tend to field large and/or powerful units.

<font size="2" face="sans-serif, arial, verdana">Will of the fates is an alteration 8 spell that requires a 4 astral mage and 4 pearls to cast. It gives every friendly unit on the battlefield luck, which means that only 50% of all physical attacks will hit them. It's mostly useful if you don't have a large number of astral 3-4 mages in your empire, and have lots of physical troops to combine it with.
