This is the official thread for the mosehansen game Crowded_Land, currently open for pretenders. Please do not start the game or take positions that are not open. Also, please do not join this game if:
a) You silently walk away from games without going to AI when you lose interest in them; or
b) You will be away and unable to play twice a day during the next week; or
c) You think that clam-hoarding is a fair and reasonable way to play.

I'm in as R'lyeh... so since I'm the one (and whoever play Atlantis) who most likely would be accused of "clam hoarding"... are we saying no building of clams period? Or what?

how about a gentlemans agreement limiting the total clams you build to 10 or something?
I mean, no answer is perfect, but at least 10 is worth something, w/out going overboard
edit: also, we might want to wait to make sure that victory conditions aren't bugged like they were in the Sweetback game.

are we saying no building of clams period? Or what?<font size="2" face="sans-serif, arial, verdana">No, build a few clams by all means. But please, don't make clams into a significant source of gem income. It's up to each individual to figure out when "a few clams" has become "clam-hoarding".
Waiting for someone to take Atlantis, Caelum, Machaka.

We still need Atlantis and Machaka. However, I'm aware that we can't wait forever for the game to fill, so I'll start it 24 hours from the time of this post if it has not already started.

and we're off!
It's up to each individual to figure out when "a few clams" has become "clam-hoarding <font size="2" face="sans-serif, arial, verdana">ehh, that's really not good. what happens if someone's idea of "not clam hoarding" is 50? 100? I'd really prefer if we had a more specific honor guideline. I suggested 10...

I just make clams with spare water gems... I don't alchemize the astrals they produce to make more... but conceivably I could still end up with 20 or so by turn 40... I don't consider that "hoarding", but others might...
So I just want to know what the rules are.

I'm still up for 10 max. I'm pythium, and can eventually make quite a few, but 10 is a nice bonus w/out being too important.
If the general desire is to allow more (w/in reason), that's ok.

I am unwilling to impose hard-and-fast rules, especially now the game has started. The original comment was simply designed to prevent those players who's strategy centres on clam-hoarding from joining the game.
I've sent a turn 1 message on the matter in the game. Basically, there is no rule. But if the game ends in a flood of Doom Horrors because someone's gem income is primarily from clams, then they have violated the spirit of this game. That's all.

Just had to say it in the message, didn't ya. My first MP game finally, my lovely luck 3 tuatha, burned lab on 2nd turn. Ya jinxed me! Ah well, the tales of my triumph will be well-deserved when I overcome this.
Incidentally, this is EXACTLY why I think luck3 needs to completely protect your capital, I expect to see a nice 500 gold event next turn or else! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif

As you say - it gives a nice bonus, it gives a way to use up, mmm, 100? 200? Water Gems, and it keeps anyone from deciding that 50 was a perfectly reasonable amount. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif

Your first MP game explains it though - I think Illwinter has subliminal code to detect a person's first game against other people. Within the first 5 turns, a temple or lab is destroyed, or 25-40% of a 20,000 population is killed, or the vampire count attacks. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif
And yeh - I think luck should -really- do a little more. Maybe ... Luck Rating times 2 turns before a bad event can happen. So luck-3 would mean you're safe until turn 6.
Otherwise, you have that lovely luck rating, and your dreams of empire and godhood are crushed....
And your people, who are so happy to live in a land of such good fortune, say "Well, the temple burned down.... But aren't we _lucky_ the tidal wave came along before the bar could burn down too!" http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif

What can I say? I agree that luck (or lack of it) plays too great a role in the first few turns.
