I know you lose the mercs if you lose the leader,.... but can they retreat normally, and if so, do they stay in a discrete group (as I would think they would have to!)

(wondering if I can include orion et alia in my drive by priestings) http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif

No. Mercs always die when they retreat. Orion cannot perform drive-by priestings, nor do I think his immortality of any use to you.

I think the retreat code does a check for "our province" which the Mercs might always fail. I know its not logical but I can see how it would have been unnoticed since it would be two very different places in the code. The "our province" check might need a special line added for mercs.

I know you lose the mercs if you lose the leader <font size="2" face="sans-serif, arial, verdana">technically, I've lost a merc leader to disease, and then the troops actually stay around in the province. You can't do anything w/ them, but they're there until the contract runs out http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif

also, if you have a merk in the hall of fame and bring him back with a ritural of rebirl, if the mummy retreats the merk will die again, forcing you to resummon them.

Using Ritual of Rebirth on the mercenary Hannibal will give you a Giant Mummy if he's in the hall of fame. However the mercenaries brought back as mummies never surrender an item... but Hannibal can be a good SC as a Giant Mummy.

(Hannibal leads 5 elephants plus the one he is using)
