They have a high prt and are mindless. Would ap crossbows do the trick?

Armor-piercing weapons are highly effective against Mechanical Mans, because their hitpoints are actually quite poor beneath their armored exterior.

Golems, however, are too tough, and generally too singular, to be easily taken out by lowly crossbowmans. Since the Golem is generally used as an SC, you have to employ methods for taking down SCs, which vary widely depending on the golem's loadout. For golems, with their starting astral magic, their weakness tends to be magic duelling.

Elfbane, Control, and Smasher also come to mind. Weapons of Sharpness is another way to get mass armor-piercing weapons. There are also armor-negating non-elemental attack forms (that Golem is probably wearing Elemental Armor, right?) such as Abomination's Gaze o' Death (area 5, 15-pt an+mr).
Smacking a Golem few times with Gate Cleaver should also suffice, and if it's the only mage controlling the Mechanical Men that's that for them as well.

I guess a few lance in the chest would do the trick against golems, but not mech men, since it makes a ton of overkill on them. I'd also try high strength monsters and summons, especially the Celestial Soldier or Demon of Heavenly Rivers if you're Tien Chi.

It's been my experience that crossbows are lacking in the ability to kill the most protected of enemies. They miss a lot, fire slowly, and even halving a guy with 20+ armor would still leave him with around 10.

Thanks for the info.

Yup, 'armor negating + magic resistance negates'. The mindbLast description is where I picked up that abbreviation, actually.
I should also note that the Gaze of Death is strength-not-added. It wouldn't make much sense if it were, methinks... unless we take such phrases as "forceful gaze" a bit too literally.

Shadow BLast seems to work really well against Mechanical Men. Nether bolts might too.
