So I just started tinkering with Caelum. Could thier commander graphics be any harder to differentiate?? It like a person in a dress with enormous wings and the only differences between them are the color of a tiny little wand or its orientation or something. Really frustrating! I've taken to renaming all my commanders like Priest 1, Arch-Mage 5, etc just to keep them all straight.

Has anyone else encountered this problem? Is there like an alternate graphics set I can drop in?

You can try lessening 'Opaque' from the preferences.

This should be pretty quick thing to mod. Maybe you would give some ideas... or try to mod those graphics yourselves.

Many nations share the problem, and if a mod changing every nation would be made some kind of runes/symbols could be added to the tgas of the more powerful casters.
And what colors would you prefer? I haven't got any difficulties myself, with Dom:PPP...

Is it possible to mod the graphics themselves? I mean I'm no pro with graphics programs but I could easily just add some little icons or something to differentiate. How do you mode the grahpics? Is there a document describing it?

You have to assign the unit new .tga graphic files. There is a having all units with their graphics and ID numbers, check the thread having those in the subject. Adding some pixels to the basic picture is enough to see the difference in the recruit screen. I don't know the commands, but docs -folder has some modding documentation (I think).
