I've never played R'lyeh and I was thinking its about time that I gave it a try. I've read how you can get free hybrid troops if you build forts in coastal provinces, which I assume means land provinces next to the water. My question is, can R'lyeh build either of the two Kelp forts it has available on land? Or does it have to take the Dark Citadel to get a fort that it can build above water?

AFAIK, you will build an dry-land analogue of the kelp fortress on land, e.g. instead of a kelp citadel you'll have a castle. But you cannot recruit your national troops above water (hybrids are autospawned). At least it used to be like that, IIRC.

Coastal Forts autospawn hybrids, but they can also recruit hybrid soldiers, troopers and lords. And star children. But other national troops are unavailable.

R'lyeh gets the Castle on land if it takes the 80-pt. Fortification (generally what you want). And while R'lyeh loses its underwater national troops on land, it gets a different set. It auto-generates Foul Spawn every turn on land, can recruit Star Children, and gets Hybrid troops (which IIRC are rather good infantry).

It's rather interesting, and along with the Void Gate makes R'lyeh the most unique nation, IMO.

Thanks for the info everyone. So long as we're on the subject, what about the smaller Kelp fort? Can you build it on land as well, and get a Mausoleum or a Watch Tower or something like that?

If you chose the 0-pt kelp fort, you'll get a 40-pt Mausoleum when built on land. Pretty neat, free 40 points. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif
