Okay, I did a quick search for this, but didn't find an answer.

Let's say there is a unit that comes with a semi-decent weapon (e.g. bane blade). I create a magic shield, give it to him. No matter which hand I put it on, it gets rid of his weapon, and says he is now attacking with his fist.

Is there a way to give someone a shield and have them keep their original weapon?

Only for certain weapons and units. Some are taken away as you describe, sometimes without a seemingly good reason. Others stay.

In this case, it probably makes sense. If you are talking about a Bane or Bane Lord, then the weapon they have by default is a two-handed Bane Blade (the 9-damage one), NOT the one-handed Bane Blade (the 6-damage one), so it makes sense they can't use it with a shield.
