Wow, thanks! You must really want peace. And I appreaciate the astral site to supplement my clams. Of course, I am sure you discovered that you accidently cut off my expansion route because you just HAD to sail across that lake (since you were vanheim and it was your special ability, lol). Lex it is probably good to say province numbers also. I like to use province numbers because it is easier to find and you dont need to be adjacent or have a scout to see the province number while you do with the province name.

well, it wasn't an accident. I waited for you to take that passage for quite some time. Eventually I figured I might as well get the extra gold while you mopped up your little corner of the world, since its a really nice income province.

I am suspicious though whether you'll be content to just expand through that narrow passage (despite there being some good grabs in that area).. cos I am quite obviously in your way.

I must agree with these concerns. Abysia seems to be doing quite good right now and the arco/caleum alliance, while neither seems as strong as Abysia, is cause for concern since together, they could rule the world! /threads/images/Graemlins/ooo.gif

In the eyes of the dragon Smaug, the greatest lord of them all, the one and only true pretender, I would have to say that both the strange squids of R'lyeh and the sailors of Vanheim are FAR more peaceloving than the warmongering carrion filth of Pangaea!

Of course, this doesn't mean that we of the true faith will pass up a golden opportunity to trade in the market of those warmongering carrion beasts. Our beloved advisors have quietly informed your majesty that, due to the inexplicit total lack of earth gems in the greatest of all empires, Smaug will actually benefit from such trading.

Server is back up and I talked to Klatu and I think we figured out why it was crashing. So if it doesnt crash again than we fixed it.

I figured it out from Last night I was trying out SP and went to check on a MP game then my SP game would say cant make temp file or something and that is the error that Klatu gets when it hosts. So when Klatu opens up another game on the computer it is messing up the server from hosting. So he will play other games on a different computer for now on. Well thats the theory at least we will see if it works on the next hosting.

The loyal armies of the GREAT SPIDER LORD have had time to prepare, however. And, the GREAT SPIDER LORD doubts that the undead smear will succeed in breaking down the walls of our great cities. No doubt the pitiful vampire queen is starving for blood and is VERY FRUSTRATED that her war of aggression has not gained her much ground. In fact, the GREAT SPIDER LORD has no doubt that Man to the North of Machaka and Abyssa to the West have grown in strength and are eager to invade both Machaka and the vampire queen’s homeland. And, LORD PICKLES in the Western Sea is certainly pleased that the vampire queen is squandering her perfect opportunity to direct her aggressive tendencies toward the water territories.

The Great and Most Powerful Ruler of All, the King of Flames, the holy dragon Smaug himself is going to start his own little war in approximately two turns.

A certain annoying pretender, who stalled the game for several early turns and was summarily booted, has left behind a stupid enemy composed of Chinese weaklings. That worthless pretender does not deserve to survive unbloodied in the Land of Karan.

My advisors tell me that the stupid Chinese enemy has somehow managed to build a powerful force of celestial soldiers. However, we of the mightiest race of them all, the one-and-only true god of Pythium, knows that those celestial soldiers will melt before our might.

Even knowing that simple fact, the Great and Powerful dragon Smaug will offer the nearest neighbors (such as the peaceful sailors of Vanheim and the fliers of Caelum) the golden opportunity to carve into this wimpy Chinese empire.

However, the Great Dragon Smaug does hereby claim the capital of the Chinese, plus all five provinces adjacent to said capital as his own. This even includes the watery province numbered 142. Let it be known to all parties concerned that Smaug will fight bitterly for these claimed provinces.

But Smaug has grwqaciously allowed the lesser nations of Vanheim and Caelum to fight among themselves over the other provinces which will soon no longer be owned by the weaklings of T'ien Ch'i.

Smaug does reserve the right to also annex a couple more provinces in the far NW corner of the map if the battle for the T'ien Ch'i capital goes well and quickly. However, due to the peaceful nature of his neighbors, Smaug hereby promises that he will not take those provinces if said neighbors manage to grab them before before Smaug gets around to annexing them.

But, they were too clever for their own good, and the computers eventually killed their creators and took over the T'ien Ch'i government. Alright as I said earlier tomorow will be the Last day that my brother and I will be in town. We will be on vacation for ten days. I have set up a plan so that my brother and I can take our turns. However there is two big ifs on if this will succeed. The first is assuming that as long as my brother and I use the same computer even if it is a diffrent computer then the one we have been using so far to submit our turns our turn orders will be accepted. The second is that I am not sure there will be a way to access the internet at one place we will be at for six of the ten days of the trip. Obviously the simple answer would be for someone to take our turns on those days which would work fine for my brother but, I made the stupid mistake of using a password that I have used for a lot of other stuff. A backup person to sub would be ideal for the times you cant do your turn. About the pw thing, its not like we know other stuff you use it for.

The ideal sub would be someone who checks the game a lot and will do the turn if you havent and it is going to host soon. I am sure a bunch of us from this group can do it and you can trust. I could do it myself if you cant get anyone but I don't have any experience with Caelum or Arco.

yeah midguard is cool because of the cheap skinshifters and the völvas/galderman
but i miss the fay boars for supply and the gorgeous dwarfen smith which standard van has but it has more expensive skinshifters though and no galdermans/völvas lol

The Vanheim flag rides high today. Behind the flag are an array of great shimmering ships, lining the coast of the Abysian empire. The vast army of troops have disembarked earlier this month and can already be seen marching in over the horizon.

When they finally set camp, only a few miles from an Abysian Temple, the generals gather in a grand tent to discuss their affairs:

"Sir, the Temple is in sight, what are our orders?"

"Well gentlemen, as you may know, your men where recruited to fight. But they where trained to fight Man, and his armies of Knights and Bowmen, to retaliate from the attack Man made on our Northern Territories. But word has come to me this a short while ago that there is a bigger threat then the expanding armies of Man. That is why I've lead you all here, to this Abysian Temple. In the morning, you shall all witness, as we march over the hill, and you see the burning land in all directions for miles around. You shall see with your own eyes the terrible blight and horror that the Abysian Empire has caused upon this land. Vile Warlocks performing endless sacrafices oh innocent children, and summoning terrible flying Devils. But the worst will be the two Queen Air Elementals that will undoubtibly take power from our Staff of Storms. Indeed, their scouts are everywhere, and so are ours.

But fear not my men, because they chall not fear. We must not rest long, and at dawn we burn that Temple to the ground, and send the fowl Pretender of Abysia a message that we shall herald the end to their existance!"

As the army of Commander Hymer disappeared beyond the horizon to burn down the Abysian temple and signal war with this demon race, Gylaug, servant of Lex, and commander of half as many men as Hymer, broke camp and instructed his troops to make for the shores.

"But sir, shouldn't we follow our brothers into battle? The war has just begun! Hymer's men have destroyed a Abysian temple, we would be fools to think that Abysia would not strike back with full force! Commander, I think they need our help!" cried a second lieutenant to Gylaug.

"Do not question the wisdom of our God. We've received orders to make sail with the quickest haste! Our enemy is gifted with flight, and will surely attempt to counter our advance into their land. Hymer knows this as well, but it is his task to draw the Abysian's attention while we make to the seas and attack several provinces away on their flank, where their defenses are weak."

At that moment, a scout rushes into the war-room shouting "Commander! We are under attack!! Huge black hawks have been seen circling our location!"

"Calm down kiddo. Our boys will deal with them." And no sooner, a huge black hawk comes crashing through the roof of the tent, smashing the tables and throwing the gathered personel to the ground. In a rush, they all get up, brushing the large oily feathers from their shimmering armor. The bloody bird lay dead at their feet, an Axe lodged firmly in its skull. An Einhere beserker soon comes rushing into the broken tent, filled with rage in his fanatical eyes.

"I believe this is yours" says Gylaug, handing the axe back to the soldier, and stepping past him into the open field, where 20 other hawks lay dead. "This ambush has costed Abysia very little, and luckily, it has costed us nothing as well. I do not want this attack to slow our plans!"

And with that, the men brough the remaining supplies back onto their ships. As they sailed away from Lish (115), heading towards Knightmarsh (138), they looked back at the Dead Marshes (104) where Hymer's army had attacked, and could see the black smoke still rising to the sky. And just coming over the hill, was Hymer, followed by a handfull of soldiers, badly wounded, and running away from two towering Queen Air Elementals and a Pheonix. No other enemies where present.

Bowing his head in memory of the 50 soldiers that must have lost their lives against these three powerful foes, Gylaug tries to turn away, but in his mind can't stop thinking of the massacre. There wasn't anything they could have done. Equiped with Hell Swords, as the Queens must have been, the normal Vanheim skinshifters and berserkers could not hope to kill them. The only thing that could defeat such things would be undead creatures, from which their swords could suck no life from. But those are thoughts for another time. Without a lab, those foes cannot use magic to move between provinces, and thus Gylaug and his men would be safe from surprise attacks, at least for a few months. With that Last thought, he finally turns away from the survivors far off on the horizon.

"Aren't we gonna go back for them, sir?!"

"No, kiddo, we have our mission, and they have theirs. Such is the way of war. Now get back to your post."

As the young scout turned his eyes away from the coast of Abysia, he could swear that he saw a glimmer inside a storm cloud, quickly moving accross the mainland, crossing the lands seperating Vanheim from Abysia. As he squinted to see more clearly, he could almost make out the face of a woman. Could it be that Vanheim has secured the services of the third and Last Queen Air Elemental? If so, she could strike anywhere inside Abysian land, and then vanish just as quickly. The young scout smiled broadly, but the smile was soon extinguished by the thought of Abysian forces invading the beautiful Vanheim countryside, a reality that could hardly be avoided now that the wrath of Aku was invoked. And so, the young scout thought, that the nation that losts its Pretender early on, and struggled for so long at the mercy of its neighbours, would now finally make a stand in the world. And should the Vanheim not survive, at least its glory would live on.

yeah the 3rd air queen moved into the middle of my land and the little air elemental it had with her died right away to my pd so she routed into enemy territory and died

when using sc's they have to go alone or they can go with your army but in either scenerio i dont like popping up with no retreat province because of dying to routing sucks

The Pythium News Network, which never sleeps, is issuing another fine bulletin.

Our fearless reporters still scour the land of Karan in search of the hottest news, despite several having already fallen by getting too close to the action.

First off, in the far NW frontier, the evil sentient computer controlling the false pretender of T'ien Ch'i has fallen forever. Due to the heroic efforts of the Greatest Lord of all, the One and Only True Pretender, the Stupendous Smaug, the threat of computer sentience has been nipped before it could spread.

*What was that??? Ah, I see. Well, OK, if you say so.*

Um.. where was I? Oh yeah, back to our report. It seems that a moderately reliable source has determined that the oddly named god of Man, Blueboy himself, has also assisted the Great Smaug in the elimination of the mechanical threat. I suppose we are indebted to Man for helping stop the advance of the machines.

Now where were we before that annoying interruption... Ah yes, we now have an additional report from the northern front.

It seems that the words of the false God of Abysia have been verified as being innacurate. Our fearless reporters state with inassailable accuracy that the sailors of Vanheim continue to maintain a slight foothold in the northern edge of the Abysian Empire. Several former fire temples can be seen still burning on the battlefield.

Our latest reports do show, however, that the Abysian fighters are relentless in their determination to shove the sailors back into the sea. It may still happen that way, according to eye witnesses.

Meanwhile, deep in the south, the valiant fighters of Pythium have managed to wrest a fortress from the clutches of the evil empire of Caelum. Luckily, this has occured before the fort could be encased in ice, as Caelum is wont to do. The fort still functions, but now pays tribute to a new master.

Furthermore, now that the formidable army of Pythium has decided to wrest some easy provinces away from the evil lords of Caelum, one can reasonably expect that the days of the ice creatures are numbered. And using small numbers to boot.

Also, we have a reliable report that an underwater fortress of R'lyeh in the province of Baptizer is being seiged by three or four strange looking devils composed mainly of ice. Our reporters are trying to sneak in for a closer look. However, it might be too dangerous amidst all that heavy fighting, so that report will have to remain speculative.

However, one thing seems sure. This report must be mildly innacurate, for these so-called devils of ice seem to follow the wishes of the fire empire of Abysia. How ice creatures can function in a land of fire is not fully understood by this reporter. The hard-working Pythium researchers are fervishly trying to understand this odd bit of information.

Finally, we have a reliable report from the western front. It would appear that the undead beings of Pangaea have somehow managed to wrest away the former capitol of the Spider lord of Machaka. While some Machaka forces are trying to advance into the desert of Abysia to establish a new capitol plus a beseiged fortress in Grey Mirks still flys the under the orange banner, it is this reporters belief that the spiders will not Last much longer in the land of Karan.

I could even say I told you so, but that might constitute bragging and we would never stoop to such a low level.

Anyway, so ends the next installment of news from PNN. Payment for using this news service should be made directly to the coffers of Pythium, for that great empire has financed the reports in search of Truth.

HA! Caelum was defeated at the gates of my borders! Granted, I faught horribly in that battle, and lost alot more commanders and troops then I should have, but never-the-less, caelum's attacking forces have been destroyed, and I'd like to see them attack again, this time I won't be so foolish in my battle scripts. (if you're wondering what I did wrong: i had half my casters scripted for useless buffs and such, when they should have just overwhelmed Caelum with False Horrors, since there was a Storm, and both his flyers and my flyers where both grounded... You see, I was expecting to have all my casters attacked by Caelum's Iceclads. I'm not even sure who had the Staff of Storms, but it resulted in a slow crawl towards the centre of the battlefield. I'm positive I could have ended the battle faster by spamming False Horrors who aren't affected by Storms)

It is a sad day that we report from the front lines. The Great and Holy Smaug hangs his head in grave defeat. He was blindsided by a lying, swindling devil who issued false proclamations. The Great Smaug barely managed to retreat from a glorious battle. I have even heard that he is now mute in addition to his other wounds.

Yes, it is a sad day in land of Pythium. Even though the message from Aku, God of the devils of Abysia, was signed in blood and sealed properly, the message content was most false. And we must also report that the great and wonderful Pythium Empire did believe the false message.

"But sir! Why did you believe the unholy nation of Abysia? They are devils!"
"Yes, but our greedy Minister of War thought we could change the holy orders from Smaug and cut off the retreat path of the losing army of Caelum after an easy castle seige. All it would have done was hasten the demise of Caelum by maybe one or two months. But now, Caelum may survive for a bit longer due to the treacherous words from Aku. Of course, the evil empire of Caelum will die quite soon regardless."
"Greedy, you say?"
"Yes, greedy. Smaug, being a great and noble commander, knew that one should not split his forces in the presence of an enemy, even if that enemy promised not to attack. However, our former Minister of War has paid the ultimate price for his miscalculation. His body has been separated from his head."

And we of the Great Empire of Pythium must now decree that the evil leader Aku can never again be believed. Once any future message has been received, it must be burned immediately.

So let this be a warning to all other nations who may have hopes of surviving in the Land of Karan. The evil, devilish empire of Abysia, controlled by the false pretender of Aku, cannot be trusted henceforth. Any future Messages from that false god must be examined carefully and only partially believed at best.

So, while Smaug limps home mute in shame, the battle goes on. At least the glorious and completely trustworthy underwater nation of R'lyeh has managed to convince the evil air queens to join the side of right. They can no longer be considered evil, now that they follow the fishes.

In general: As of now the Linux patch is not working at all, this prevents me from upgrading just yet. Once the Linux patch is fixed, it will be up to the organizer of the game whether to update that game to 2.13 or keep it at 2.12. I can run some games on 2.12, and others 2.13, so not everyone has to upgrade at once.

It seems there is a fairly serious bug in 2.13 causing crashes with various artifacts. Until the scope of this bug is determined, and either fixed or workarounds discovered, I'm going to recommend against using the new patch, but the final decision is up to the players.

Anyone that upgrades to 2.13 will still be able to play on 2.12 servers, but the battle replays will be wrong. Not sure if the reverse is true or not, it probably is.

The Posts in this thread have been highly entertaining (Pasha's Great Spider Lord was classic, while he Lasted), even to a non-player such as myself.

If there is any interest, I'd like to play in another mosehansen game, but I'd rather not start yet another one myself (I've started 3 already http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/redface.gif). Two nasty Ice devils invaded into the Sea of Carrassos, the land adjacent to our beloved homeland. The devils quickly went berserked and fought to the death. Our mighty forces managed to cut deep into those devils and we smote them down!!!

Thus, we are announcing to all false pretenders in the land of Karan that two ice devils with many afflictions have returned to neutral status, no longer content to live in a land of fire. If any nation that is friendly to Pythium wants to summon the devils, the mighty Smaug has decreed (using hand signals, of course) they we will give the 55 blood slaves away for a mere 30 nature gems or their equivalent.

one ice devil died from poison after pythiums army retreated but my other ice devil has almost 300hp and was perfectly fine and pythiums forces were dead or routed and the battle ends and he is fine

My first guess is that he failed a MR roll against a spell like decay and didn't have any regeneration items. That will kill him at the end of the battle regardless of hitpoints. The second is that you aren't using the same Version of the game as the host computer.

I just talked to the host. We are both on the same Version. The other party in the battle though I just found out is on another Version. And in his battle replay my ice devils got butchered real fast while in my replay I slaughtered all his troops.

BUT we have a new problem...I was Last person to do turn for it to host AND the game just time warped several turns backwards and its like this for 3 of us so far.

WTF!!!!

All I know is that this is getting very frustrating...should we kill the game or everyone make sure they are on 2.12 or whatever patch we agree upon bec all these bugs is making this not very fun.

On the battle replay I saw, both ice devils died quite easily. It was not even close. I lost 1 hydra and maybe a dozen vine ogres and several summer lions was all. Oh, and all my tritons died as well, but they were there only for the poison anyway.

In fact, my replay matched exactly the battle result. I even had several artifacts I found from the dead ice devils. I guess it is another result from the patch problem with the buggy replays.

Of course, with the game so messed up right now with the server reseting to before the battle, I would say this game has reached the FUBAR stage. The battle where I killed the ice devils has not even happened on the server now!

Very bad. I knew I should not have upgraded to 2.13.

It's too bad, for this game was so fun. But I think it is badly hosed and must die a painless death. We have had many a problem all along, and it is amazing that it was stable enough for us to go so far into the game.

As for declaring Aku the winner, the great and holy empire of Pythium will never agree on this. I even believe that after all the massive recent battles, the loss of the air queens and ice devils, and the (near) elimination both of the devil's two allies, Abysia is now only third best in this game.

I think Man is currently strongest, though my own Pythuim might be just as strong. It is difficult to know for sure without the score graphs.

Pangaea is certainly fourth, followed by Vanheim, R'lyeh, Arco, and then Caelum. Just my own opinion in my corner of the world, so I wonder what the other folks think.

To summarize, here is the official standings from the completely unbiased network, the one and only PNN:

I do have a question for all. I was not all that far from completing all research. When that happens, I was envisioning all my 100+ mages/priests reverting to defend castle. So, when I cycled through the next commander hot key (n), I could just see myself having to mess with a gigantic number of idle dudes. And every single turn too.

I assume that this dilema has happenned before to someone.

I would disagree with ranking me third. I had all the arch devils and 3 ice devils(actually if it would of went to the next real turn it would of been 4) in my capital and was resummoning one a turn. I also in the next 2 turns was going to summon back 2 air queens. And on top of all that I was constantly summoning devils.

I personally feel I was the strongest nation. I had the most sc's, I believe the biggest gem income, and I know I had to be the biggest clammer. Too bad I didnt get to experiment with my idea with assassins with blood thorns and the dusk daggers =[.

Pythium and Man did have big armies but Man's armies would of been vulnerable to my flames from the sky because his troops have low hp(especially after I would of dispelled his gift of health if we went to war). I honestly didn't have any fear of defeat in the game. As time went on I would of had vampires for home defense and devils for offense but also complimented with multiple sc's(I wasnt going to send them out commando style anymore). And the air queens when resummoned I wanted them to go out with storm demons. I had a lot of plans I wanted to play with but the game got bugged bec of the damn patch =[.

But oh well I was ranked 3rd in the first newbie game until everyone actually realized as the game went on that I was the most powerful. It is because I go for the long term win but focus on the ability that I cant be destroyed bec I was fully confident that I couldnt lose in this game. But anyway, Im happy enough to give Klatu the win just for the sake of hosting the server through all the bull**** he had to deal with because of all the server problems of constantly having to reboot it almost everyday lol. But through all the problems this was a great game and a lot of fun with all of you guys.

These are interesting points, Aku. I guess after watching my hydras utterly rip your ice devils with ease, I suppose I decided that they could kill any SC. In fact, I had only 11 hydras in that underwater battle, which was less than 1/3 of them spread around my army. I also am fairly sure that the blessed hydras would rip the devils to shreds, what with the nine attacks (arranged three by three) per hydra and the poison. So I put you third because I felt I would be able to take you out fairly easily. Vampires are totally hopeless against the hydras with their regeneration. It would have been like swatting flies (flies seem immortal too when they swarm around you).

Plus your flmes from afar was fairly ineffective against my vine ogres, summer lions, and hydras, which was the only troops I recruited in the Last 20 turns or so.

However, I would have had severe trouble against man. His legions of longbows would have ripped my poor, slow hydras and they would have all gone berserked, thus making them even more suspectible to mass arrows. He would have lost tons of knights to the poison, though. But I would have probably lost all my hydras eventually to the longbows. That was why I thought he might have been ahead of me.

And as for you being able to rip Klatu, that sure makes sense to me. His longbows are no match for your fast flying devils. And flames from afar would utterly destroy his longbows before they got near you.

So, perhaps it might have been one of those rock/paper/scissors thingies.

Now, for Pasha Dawg, may I remind the UTTERLY DEAD spiders that they had exactly ZERO provinces left at the end? Even Caelum still had one province left, though it was under seige when the game went to the dawgs.

I also have to say that Serpent Cult is not all that bad a theme as I had orginally thought it was. In fact, had I gone 10 nature and got the extra regeneration plus the 4 berserk, it would have been even better. Blessed hydras rock big time! Each one is a full mini-SC without leadership. And the reduced upkeep cost on them is wonderful. But I was stupid and went only 7 nature, for some such newbie reason. Still, Serpent Cult was pretty darn decent after all, in my opinion.

well the ice devils lost bec i assume they went berserk from hell swords bec of the tritons flying on them right away causing them to not cast any of their spells =[

but that was my intial sc's where equipment was limited, my new sc's all had blood thorns and lucky coins for a shield so no berserk messing them up

also i was going to stop sending sc's alone and send them with devil armies

the flames from the sky i stopped casting on you bec they couldnt kill the high hp units but the spell would of wrecked havoc on man if he invaded me

so i could of devastated man while man could of devastated you lol

for the hydras i could of gave them poison immunity with one of those misc items since a slot would be open from the lucky coin also could of done bane lord or wraith lord sc's

would of been interesting but oh well

This was my first game, and I'm just curious to know some benchmarks.

Well I had I think almost 30 clams so far and making 2 a turn. My income was like a 1000 with 500 upkeep. My gem income was around 15 of each gem type + around 100 blood a turn. Remember my income is lowered a lot because my blood provinces I have at 0% tax to keep the unrest at 0. Blood nations get killed on their income because of that. So Man or Pythium would be the typical income if they care to reveal it. I also was getting gold from alchemizing fire and earth gems with the alchemist stone. I had too much fire gems with that eternal pyre running so long. I mainly used my gold to buy blood hunters and I started buying assassins, build up pd, or buy stuff from other players.

hm i had about 25 clams and 15 fiever fetishes too .

Upkeep - 730
Gem income, including 14 clams and 9 fetishes - 88
Blood slaves - about 15-20 on average
Provinces - 41
Mages - 77 of which all but 3 sages were also priests
Other commanders - 22
Hydras - 31 and recruiting 2 per turn

No SCs, though. I was going hydra power instead.

with 435 per turn.
I also had built about 12 of the unique artifacts, maybe more.

Although, being on opposite sides of the world, we would not have crashed until much, much later.

maybe 400 income and 390 upkeep most of the time.. no real gem income to speak of other then what i started with (i lost all the good provinces) and only about 20 mages. I had pretty decent research, but it was useless since I didn't have the gems or the paths/levels to cast anything impressive.
