Bes Sones has made a few alternative skins for dom 2. You can get them from the mods page.

Anyone care to post a few screenshots of the new look?

Cheers,
Thomas

Seems it's more pleasant for the eyes than the original that comes with dom2 http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif

I'll give it a try...

Looks nice.

Does it affect the screen "behind" the maps?
I keep thinking that someone should do a Version of that with a keypress chart around the rim so that it shows in the map view when you scroll to the edge.

Yes, the background behind the map changes...its a repeating circle pattern.

It will be nice to have nations/themes specific skins and a easy to use perl script (or widget) to chenge them ...

good play

<font size="2" face="sans-serif, arial, verdana">Sure thing! (I'm the guy who designed the themes). It started out as a personal project. I wanted something with a Gothic feel--brighter and more colorful than the default graphics, and higher resolution (I play at 1600x1200; the themes will scale to whatever resolution you play at, however). Then a few folks asked me to do some specific variations, and now the Gothic theme comes in three different flavors...

Illuminated (sort of an illuminated manuscript look):

Stone and Steel (good for Vanheim and Ulm):

And Bloodstone (evil Dominions rejoice!):

I think Johan put an earlier prototype theme in the .zip on the Illwinter site, as well. Also, you can mix and match the guiborder2 and mapbg files; currently I'm using the Bloodstone background with the gold-rimmed Illuminated menus, and it's sort of growing on me:

Enjoy!

What I wouldn't give for a truly oriential Themed one for T'ien Ch'i. Of course I'm biased.

They all look terrific Ben. Have you considered reskinning a few other portions or are they to muddled to do exactly how you'd like?

Thanks a lot for the screenshots - and for making the themes of course!!

They look really really cool, but now of course we will all be like spoiled children and go "more, more, more!!" http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif

These skins are COOL !!! &lt;img border="0" title="" alt="[Eek!]" src="images/icons/shocked.gif" /&gt;

I didn't even know that changing this was possible - Thumbs up Bes !!!

After I figured out which files represent the "background" files I immideatly changed the "text windows" into a white variation of themselves, and now its so comfortable =P
Photoshop is so nice to have around =P

Your themes are obviously cool, but I dislike the change to the "background", I like that wooden table =P

Most everything else in the game has to be modified as a mod file, but that's not too hard to do.

One thing I would like to do, sometime, is modify some of the unit sprites to make them easier to tell apart. Some nations have different units that use virtually the same sprites... Pangaea and Ulm, for example. I'd like to be able to tell at a glance which units are regular Pikeneers and which ones are Black Plate Pikeneers. It wouldn't be a drastic change--I like the existing unit graphics, they just need some obvious cues to let you discern which is which. More obvious than the current cues, at least, which are mostly along the lines of "the two pixels that make up the unit's gloves are two shades darker."

I'd also like to figure out a way to get rid of the beveled drop shad-ow that surrounds each commander in the commander list, and each option in the menus on the right-hand side of the main screen. They just seem unnecessary. But I haven't figured out how to do that yet.

Thanks for the skins! Customization is always a good thing. =)

Has anyone jumped on this? How about a combination between the keypress chart and a background screen for maps? It would be a great addition to a combination mod and map and help files and background screens for newbie tutorial zip-file

Ok, I would *really* like to use these skins but I cant figure out how to use Unrar to decompress them! I've got the file from the Illwinter site and some unrar program but it looks like it runs in DOS or something. I use Win 98 SE... please help me! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/redface.gif

Ben,

Something Oriental flavored. Perhaps an oriental dragon as the surrounding selection boxes. As a background, perhaps something sutiably japanese. Perhaps Kitsune has some good ideas for resources.
