View Full Version : MP Game - Casual Carnage (noob/int game) - running

Sheap has graciously offered to host a game that includes a mod, and I'm thinking a game including Graeme's Moloch Coward Fix mod is in order (MolochCowardFix.dm). <img src="http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif" alt="" />

Now this will be twice in a row that I've been selfish in staking out a position, but I've been dying to try out Moloch with Abysia, and unless there's strenuous objection, I'd like to do that (of course everyone will be free to use the Moloch, which will be stripped of its Imps by the mod). Here's my proposal for game specs:

Karan map, Indy 9, magic sites 50
renaming enabled, HOF 15
25 hour quickhost
6-8 players
no house rules

I think we'll all need to load Graeme's mod, so I'll attach it to this post. Sheap will give us an IP and port, once we've all agreed to the players and game spec.

Anyone game?

No exclusions - unless your username is Boron, in which case only T'ien Chi Barbarian Kings is permitted.

OK, bad joke, I'm sorry http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/redface.gif

Great! But just tell us which nation you would like to play (as mentioned above Caelum, Mictlan, Pangaea and Abysia are already taken). We're closing in our 8 players pretty quickly, so I'm hoping we can all upload our pretenders and start the game by tomorrow. I'd suggest you use whatever time you have to try out a Pretender setup for the nation you're trying out.

In the opening in game it's mostly about taking the independent provinces (or indies), as quickly as possible, and that's one thing you can practice in SP that carries over perfectly well to MP. You should probably try a game using the same setup we're going to use in the game, as describe in my initial post, and most importantly use the same indy strength (8). IMO, you get the most bang for the buck by testing a given pretender setup for the first 10-15 turns.

The map is a 3.4mb download, and I got it off Arryn's site:

Be sure to get Targa's corrections, as well, which are also on Arryn's site.

You know me by now, Lepakko - I'm happy to make this a ladder game, if no one objects. I'll do the post on Battlefield pointing at this thread tomorrow.

For those that don't know what Lepakko is talking about, Battlefield.com maintains a section devoted to Dominions2, including maintaining a ladder for players competing in Dom2. Theoretically this means all players in this game should be registered on the Battlefield site, but I don't think that's particularly urgent.

Here's some links for the Battlefield site:
The Battlefield is at:
http://www.the-battlefield.com
Battlefield Dom2 Page:
http://www.the-battlefield.com/index.php?page=dom2main&game=dom2
Battlefield Dom2 Forum:
http://www.the-battlefield.com/forum/index.php?showforum=27

Here's our current player list:

Caelum - Boron
Mictlan - YellowCactus
Pangaea - Aku
Abysia - Thufir
Arco- PrinceMegaherz
??? - Galadin
??? - Lepakko

Assuming both Galadin and Lepakko are in, that leaves us with 7 players, which will be enough to start with. I'll PM Sheap tomorrow (Friday), and hopefully we can get this game started by tomorrow night.

To make things right, I think I need to play Vanheim again in a comparable setting like this, just to make up for the blunders I've made in said earlier game (Note To The Wise: Don't play Midguard unless you know what you're doing! Which I don't, so I'll be playing Standard theme.. and might try the Moloch, but gotta run now and play "WinXP Fixit Man" for my GF... I'll upload a pretender by tonight (its 6:30am right now..).

Awesome - this is great Sheap!

I have one question (that anyone knowledgeable may be able to answer), if you've uploaded your pretender once, is there any way to re-upload without a manual intervertion of the guy running the server?

I'd guess not, just based on the fact that we always go through the step of making someone anonymous on mosehansen, and use the web interface to do that, but I just had to ask.

Assuming the answer to the above is "no", everyone be careful with your uploads, and remember to put a password on them (if you are so inclined). It'd be nice to get this right on the first shot http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

Also, let me start the game - with luck I'll be able to do that before tonight. Hurrah!

Sheap
August 27th, 2004, 04:20 PM
Sure, just make your new pretender, re-connect and do the upload, it'll work fine.

That said: everyone please do remember your passwords. Most games that I've hosted have had to be restarted, but if everyone uploads the right god and remembers the password, we won't have to, which would be a real treat.

Yep - I'm not sure what timezone everyone is in, so I don't know when we'll all be uploaded. I was hoping by tonight, PDT, but we'll see. Lepakko said 1800 GMT, which I think translates to 1100 PDT, so maybe he means Saturday?

Anyhow, do you have to be the one to start the game, or can you set it to client start? If so, I can watch the thread, check the uploads, and start it when we're all on board.

Actually, I've found that in theory a well played Vanheim should counter a well played Caelum. Likewise, Vanheim can also compliment Caelum extremely well. I must admit since I've started playing Dom, those are the two races that have captivated almost all my attention.

Yes, it is necessary. I attached it to my initial post for this thread, so you can download it here. You'll see "attachment" in red letters near the top of my post, that's the link for the file.

As for knocking turns out this weekend - I'm all for that http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif However, we'll see how the timezones work out. Lepakko at least is in Finland, so I guess he's 7-8 hrs ahead of me here in sunny California. For what it's worth I'll be around most of Saturday, but out for Sun afternoon/evening.

8am SAT -- PrinzMegaherz (Germany +1)

Okay, okay. I need to get my Dom2 fix somewhere. I hate MP play. After you start it, SP seems a lot less satisfying. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/smirk.gif

Downloaded maps (I assume that you first copy in the contents of the first rar file and overwrite the second one over it?), downloaded mod, and uploaded pretender. Unfortunately, it still seems that most people have not uploaded pretenders yet. I guess that must mean they actually have a life.

You'll have to reinstall, apply patch 2.12, and maintain a 2.12 copy, Boron, sorry!. Gandalf points out in the patch thread that you can keep both Versions around, but you just need to copy the 2.12 Version before you apply the 2.13 patch.

There is a server side dependcy, that question has already been asked on the mosehansen thread.

You should copy the dom2.exe file (to something like dom2_2.12.exe), and make a shortcut to run that .exe at a later date. Then you can install the patch, but while you are playing in an MP game that has not upgraded, you should continue to run ver 2.12.

For this game, we'll need Sheap to upgrade the server end before we can all upgrade.

Lex

i've also lost my dominions cd.. would have been easier to hold on to if it came with a jewel case or box..

i wonder if its possible to download the install files.. they should make the demo download the full Version, and when you put in your serial number, it unlocks the features, that way we wouldn't have to rely on the CD, and Shrapnel would save a bundle on shipping.

I wouldn't worry too much about Boron's expertise - the newbie's answer to the experienced player is diplomacy (i.e. just gang up on him! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif ).

I would love to play a 17 player game on Orania, although I think there's little hope of getting a noob game of that size going. One thing to watch out for though, the vetarans warned me before starting this game that games on big maps often bog down into massive MM, which is not necessarily the best way for a new player to learn/enjoy MP play in Dom2.

Really?? Maybe it's just my experience, but I think Karan maxes out at 8. In my first MP game, I really got really got screwed big time with my starting position in Karan with 10 players. If you want to have a crowded map, I think Inland is a better choice, mainly since it's dual wraparound, but also because it's relatively open.

oh karan has "only" 162 provinces so you are right i always thought it has 220 or like this .

i enjoy my 2 karangames so far though both were with i think 10 players but in both i were quite lucky with placement .

That Battle of the Danes thread was excellent - the annotated screen grabs of battles were particularly entertaining. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

As for our game, thank you Deccan for pointing out the obvious http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/tongue.gif If you all don't get off your duffs pretty soon, the Moloch will rule the world! Actually, the key to my expansion is not the fact that I've lost the imps, but rather that luck-draining ability that Graeme added in his mod (did I forget to mention that before we started?). This of course explains the absolutely horrid luck experienced by Boron and Deccan with their early lab explosions.

But anyhow - what's going on in this game - I've never seen such a slow expansion! I understand two players lost their labs, but even so, I'd guess that should cost no more than one turn in expansion rate. Boron, you've probably seen more MP than I have, so correct me if I'm wrong, but I think that one of the things that veterans are able to do consistently is to put together an indy-crushing army from anywhere from turn 3-4, or maybe turn 5 at the latest. Then, if they've got an SC pretender, they can occasionaly get 2 provinces per turn.

uhm if it happens on turn 3 and you have to save your money for the damn lab it declares the slow expansion rate .
IF your sc pretender searches the province he gets 1 province per 2 turns .

i took a very experimental pretenderdesign so i have little money for an expansion army . if i hadn't had my labblow i had now 1 province more but it doesn't matter really since i just didn't plan to even grab a province with troops i will though hopefully make up for it later by a keymagic http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif
and taking away provinces from a neighbor has some appeal too http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif

Well, I'm already in Musical Chairs which is a big game using the Orania map, so I wouldn't want to be in another. What I'm thinking is something more similar to what the "Battle of the Danes" people are doing, with say, four players or so with another 3 or 4 AI players set to Impossible on a map like Karan.

I think that a big turn-off for newbies starting in MP is how cut-throat the human competition can be. With a set up like the above, it's more of an SP game, with the added incentive to do better because other human players are involved.

There's no such thing as "luck-draining". I just thought it was rather perverse that I got as lucky as I did (it's a long story, but my start position was pretty sweet), despite having misfortune 1, while Boron and Deccan, both having L3, got the infamous exploding lab screw-over (I'd vote for a rule change that prevented that happening before turn 5, for any nation with Luck scale >= 0).

Anyhow, what goes around comes around, and YellowCactus has seen fit to do some luck draining of his own - we'll have to see how that works out http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

Well, it's not niceness on my part so much as an interest in a balanced game (which Dom2 by and large does very well). Putting in this exception does make it a special case, and that in fact raises a red flag that maybe doing so would imbalance things, exactly the opposite effect of what one would want. However, it does seem that the lost lab/temple in opening turns is a particularly heinous event.

It's cool how fast this game is going, compared to Pandemonium. I guess you just need to have the right mix of players.

yeah http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

posting always new turn here on the forum helps too i think and xxx is the Last even more http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

especially when a fast turn occurs that you don't expect it and don't check mosehansen game status then this is really helpful .

in newbiegame 2 though we didn't play on mosehansen but on klatus server http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/smile.gif we were very quick with always posting xxx is Last or new turn up http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

No - try again. I got in just fine, a few minutes ago. I have (and others have reported), where many times in a row I've locked up on trying to connect. If that happens, I just shut down the app, and try again, repeatedly. So far it's always worked (eventually). I see this more often on mosehansen than Sheap's server, but I have seen it here, as well.

As you may have noticed, YellowCactus has become a Florida evacuee. He posted a note saying he expected to stale, but didn't mention how long he was going to be gone.

How do people feel about putting the game on hold for up to 5 days? If we do this, I'd give him the 5 days, restart the game, and if he stales 2 times after that, turn him AI.

Let me know how you feel about this idea, or post alternatives if you have a better idea.

Yeah good idea . Let's pause for Yellowcactus http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif .
Good luck Yellowcactus . Hopefully the hurricane doesn't damage your house or similiar .

I wonder what is going on there though : Even in the far away german news they broadcasted information about the hurricanes . What surprises me most is that there were a lot of hurricanes in florida since about 1 months ! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/eek.gif

Right - I saw your post on the sheap's server thread (thanks for posting here as well, though).

We wanted to hold up the game anyhow, so no rush. However it would be nice if he can manage to salvage our game http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

Actually if you want to resurrect this game Thufir, you should probably get Sheap to e-mail you the files and host the game via PBEM. (Not that I mind this game being dead. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif )

Let me know what is going to happen because if the game is dead then I may join a new game that starts up.

Thufir

Well, I still have not heard from Sheap, and I have no means to do so. I'd guess that somebody on this forum can get a hold of him (maybe archaeolept), and get the game files for us. I'll take steps to that end, and see what I can do about getting the files (but if anyone has any other means of getting a hold of Sheap, please do tell!).

I'm open to PBEM (if that's workable), but I'm a little bit nervous about whether we'd have full participation. After all, mosehansen + this forum make it about as easy to communicate as can be done, yet even with mosehansen games it's hard to get all the players communicating, and few if any staling/dropping out without notice. PBEM would just be that much harder to keep going (though I'm certainly up to the task http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif ). I certainly would feel better about a PBEM game if we get a substantial majority of the players voting for doing that, here in this thread.

If we get the files, I can also ask Esben whether it's possible to get this game up and running on mosehansen, but that may be a pipe dream (both from the point of view of feaseability and abuse of Esben's time).

Regardless, I'll send out more PMs to seek out those files, and post on the results.

Is this game officially dead, or should I wait a bit more before blabbing everyone's secrets here?

Aku

Well we cant entirely declare it dead until Sheep is contacted. I hope the game can be revived because I really liked it.

Thufir
September 24th, 2004, 01:52 PM
Well, I've done everything in my power to get a hold of Sheap (or, at least I've tried everything I'm willing to do - the one thing I haven't tried is to hang out for hours on IRC and repeatedly PM him there). I did exchange PMs w/ Archaeolept, and he offered no suggestions beyond what I had already done. Unless someone here has some ability to actually get Sheap to respond, I'm not optimistic.

In addition, I'm nervous about getting the momentum going again. Some of the players here have probably forgotten the game exists. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/frown.gif

Dead as a door nail, near as I can tell. I've done everything possible to contact Sheap, and nada.
