its a very large map, and slow going. no chance of having something like 50% victory conditions instead? You know how huge end-games drive me up the wall... http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/tongue.gif

Tempting but I'll pass. 3 days turns in the first 20-30 turns will drive me crazy. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/laugh.gif Although by turn 50-60 I would probably be glad to such relaxed hosting time... http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

i am so tempted. I like the players involved so far, and that is most important. Also I have this strange hankering to play around w/ the definitely not quite a powerhouse Broken Empire.
but i am scared of the endgame, I admit. the map isn't that much smaller than Orania, and the terrain far more rugged. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

hm i am tempted too .
but research very difficult frightens me off since i thought of giving SG ermor a try .
because i am in too many games already the 3 days quickhost would be ideal though .
so is research very difficult fixed or is there a chance to turn it into normal research ?
with normal research and archeo not taking BE ermor i would be in as SG ermor http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/smile.gif
since i have thaumatic experience with a lab/temple/popblow event on turn 2-3 i can't think of playing anything else than ermor atm lol http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/yawn.gif
no matter what scales i take i seem to attract the hurting events in the first turns at an unbelieveable high rate http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/evil.gif

Since you don't _LIKE_ the heavy magics and summonings, Boron, why wouldn't you like VD research? It makes your national troops more important.
archaeolept
August 31st, 2004, 01:58 PM
w/ these settings and this map i'd actually suggest not allowing the undead nations...
The VD research will quite slow down the development of counters to massed undead, while not hurting ermor much at all.
another reason I was thinking of taking Broken Empire.

Most of the player uploaded his pretender. Only the on from Pangaea (and mine) is missed. St. Patrik please upload.
I'll wait 24 hour from now on to give more players the chance to join. After that i'll start the game. So hurry and join as C'tis, Ermor, Vanheim, R'lyeh, Mictlan or Machaka. The map give room for 2-3 more nations.

I will create a pretender this evening when I get home from work.

Cainehill

I think the only "special instructions" are the ones for joining a server game on Mosehansen. In case you haven't done this before, after you create the pretender:
Connect to the mosehansen server (mosehansen.dk works, although I think dom2.mosehansen.dk is what is specified on the website), then the specified port ( 2298 for this game ). At this point, it'll show you a list of nations - click on the one you want (making sure that it is displayed as 'open', which it should be), Machaka.
At this point your pretender has been uploaded, but you'd really want to register on the mosehansen.dk website, and 'claim' your nation there. That way you don't show up as anonymous (anons are sometimes kicked, because of many problems with them) and best of all, you can easily see when the turns have run.

Sounds like a plan. I'm going home for lunch so I'll try to get it done then. Otherwise tonight.

DARN!
Okay, at lunch I registered at mohansen.dk and also created a pretender.
However all attempts to log onto the server got me disconnected. I received the "server connection lost" (Nagot Gick Fel) message and dom2 closes completely. I tried typing in variants of the IP address but to no avail.
Advice?
archaeolept
September 3rd, 2004, 04:24 PM
you're imputting the proper port#?
do you get to the nation selection screen in domII when you're trying to upload your pretender?
En Forcer
September 3rd, 2004, 04:28 PM
I select from the main dom2 menu "connect to network" -- it then asks for server IP so I type the URL "dom2.mohansen.dk"
as soon as I hit enter I get the error message. It never actually connects.
Do you suggest I try to input the port # first? Previous Posts imply that you enter that after the IP address.
I was wondering if maybe somebody could give it to me in IP format? IE- 54.256.18.22 that sort of thing. Maybe that would work?

his name is mose not mo http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/tongue.gif
80.161.86.108
also, for convenience's sake w/ network games, it is worth creating a desktop shortcut.
for instance, I would have a shortcut entitled "hard_slog" (the name of the game) w/ this under "properties" (right click shortcut icon to edit properties):
E:\games\dominions2\dom2.exe --tcpclient --ipadr 80.161.86.108 --port 2281-m --res 1152 864 --clickvol 0
where you would replace your own path to the Dom2 executible, the correct port, and the resolution you would like the window to be in (or just ignore all that if you don't want it windowed).

If worst comes to worst and I can't connect, I'll email my pretender so the initial turn can commence without me and I can get things working over the weekend. But I hope to fix this by tonight.

That is a possibility. I have zonealarm running.
I will try setting that URL/IP as a "friend" and allow total access to it to see if that enables my connection.
**I also have Spybot 1.3 running which blocks ad-ware and scrubs for cookies and adware programs and marketing tracking software. I wonder if that program would also interfere with dom2?

I'll have to bail out of this game and wait till some other time.
So...Machaka is free.
I've tried everything. Even the shortcut above but then it tries to connect and the game shuts down.
Should I wipe the game and reinstall?
Also, I am running 2.13
would that bork the connection?
This sucks....
Cainehill
September 3rd, 2004, 10:17 PM
You might try disabling zonealarm temporarily, just to see if that's it. I'm running ZA myself, but I think all I had to do is tell ZA that yes, the dom2.exe was to be allowed to access the internet.
Mmm - if you're running in full screen mode, you might be getting blocked by zonealarm but unable to see it.
Edit: Illwinter has written that 2.13 and 2.12 are compatible, so that shouldn't be it. However, if you do succeed in connecting, you really REALLY want to set yourself up with a 2.12 executable for the game; otherwise the battles you watch are likely to be completely hallucinatory.
IE: You watch a battle, see your pretender destroy the opposing enemy with minimal losses. But the battle report says all your guys died, and your Pretender is waiting to be recalled, like a defective appliance. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif

It's worth a shot, but it's pretty unlikely that this the problem. I tested hitting Sheap's server w/ a 2.13 client, and got through fine.

Mmm - Sheap is the other big hoster (big, juicy, mutton!) I can think of. I could give an IP, but unless he (or someone else) sets up a test game for you to try to connect to (because of passwords, etc), I'm not sure it would help.
Eh - have you tried pinging / tracerouting / telneting? I don't think it'd be a DNS problem, but it could be, or a routing problem, and those would help figure out if it was.
Good luck.
Edit: Oh, and remember: if ZoneAlarm was on at boot, shutting it down may leave the internet shut down. (This is mostly, and definately, true when the vector engine doesn't initalize properly.) In which case, make sure you can get to other pieces of the net. If you can - you're shafted. If you can't - it might be ZA, and rebooting with it turned off might fix it.
Again, good luck.
Sheap

Anyone that wants can aim a client at benatar.snurgle.org port 2000 (through 2006, heh) and see if they can connect. You won't be able to play (and even if you can, you shouldn't). But you should at least get as far as the nation selection screen before it asks you for a password, where you'll be stopped, most likely.
I guess if push comes to shove I could put up a test game just for you to experiment with.

Caelum Maltrese
Jotunheim navrunner
Ulm Cheezeninja
Pythium Cohen

Machaka En Forcer - whats your state of connecting?
The not-played nations R'lyeh and C'Tis are closed. DragonFire11, if you still want to join this game choose one of this 2 and upload your pretender.
You all have ~6 hours to upload/rechoice pretenders then the game will start.

And we already have 13 players - already a bit crowded for the cradle map. Not like St Patrik didn't have several (4) days in which he could've done his pretender and uploaded, whereas Enforcer has bad luck in not being able to connect to the server.
Either way - I don't see where we should wait on either one of 'em. The one had his chance, and the other seems unable to play.
