View Full Version : Patch 2.14

There is now a patch 2.14 available.
It fixes the item-ritual-crash.
It fixes a network bug.
And: ......
It is available for SOLARIS.
It has been a while since we were able to update the Solaris Version. It feels good to have an update even though there are few Solaris Users out there. We know of one Solaris based server.
Anyway, have fun. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/cool.gif

Yeah I didnt even finish upgrading all my copies to 2.13 but thats OK. A quicky fix patch is a welcome thing. I wonder if any of the computer game magazines or conventions give awards for post-sale support in a game. If they did then Illwinter would definetly deserve recognition.

This may be a little silly question, but, if for example I want to format my hard disk, when I reinstall Dom2 can I patch it directly to 2.14 or do I have to apply all the patches?
I am asking because I noticed that the 2.12 is bigger than 2.14, at least the Windows Version.
Thanks.

I *think* you can go directly with the 2.14 Version. I guess the difference in size comes from the documentation files, as 2.12 brought the modding and mapediting PDF files which are not present in the 2.14 Version. So unless you need these files, you should be fine with going directly with the 2.14 Version (keyword being "should" here).

Exactly . The only other two worthy companies i would consider too are Blizzard ( who wonders http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/biggrin.gif ) and Paradox Entertainment .
While Paradox Entertainment is an indy software developer too their games though NEED at least the first 5 patches severely http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/biggrin.gif while dominions was almost bugfree in the release Version already i think .
You are my favourite game developer company now even close before paradox entertainment http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif . There Johan , the main developer shows awesome presence on the board too and cares about his games too .
But you do an even better job , perhaps especially because it is not your main job but your "hobby" . So your motivation is even higher http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif .
I think dominions is at the moment the most rewarding longtime Grand strategy game . Probably it will be until dominions 3 http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/biggrin.gif .

Malfador and HPS Simulations also come immediately to my mind on that score. Oh Battlefront is good too with their Combat Mission series. There are probably others, but it is the wonderful exception when there is such good support.

I'm having no luck running the patch app on OS X (upgrading from 2.12). Is there anybody else out there who's tried to install it on OS X (and either failed or succeeded)?

I ran the patch on OS X (upgrading from 2.13 to 2.14) and everything went fine.

So it's either a problem with going from 2.12 or a problem with me. I'm dragging the "dominions2.app" into the updater, it registers that it's been dragged, but claims it's the wrong file and hence didn't update.

OK, it was the infamous "need-to-update-from-a-clean-install-but-only-after-updating-permissions" problem. Happily upgraded to 2.14 now.

The Mac patch can only be used from Version 2.02 (original on CD Version) or 2.13.

Out of curiosity (I'm not a Mac user), is this small but important detail mentioned in a README file somewhere? Because it's missing from the info on Shrapnel's downloads page (which is where the warning should be, IMHO), nor has it previously been mentioned on this forum (such as in this thread when the announcement was made, or in the hardware issues sticky thread). You might ought to consider making this detail/warning a bit more obvious to Mac Users to help them avoid further grief, especially for those that don't hang out here in this forum. Just a suggestion.

/threads/images/Graemlins/Lips.gif Thank you very very much, Oh Worthy People! /threads/images/Graemlins/Lips.gif
Tiny Question: Does that mean starting now that e.g. Clams and Fetishes only give 1 gem per turn total, no matter how many of them are worn (clams and fetishes no longer "stack")?
Anyhow, thanks much!!

Going directly with the 2.14 patch does work for a base Version (at least for Windows); I had to try it on another computer. However, would it be possible to add the modding.pdf file as either a separate download or as part of the 2.14 patch? It is currently not available in the latest patch, and I do not think you can download it separately from Shrapnel.

If Shrapnel/IW allows it, I can make the file available for download from my website. All I need is an official OK from someone ...

Any chance that in the future, something (perhaps the Game Settings screen) will show what Version the host is running?

Please go ahead Arryn. The updated manual will be available for download seperately as soon as it is completed.

I've made the Dom 2 modding manual available for download from my site. The direct URL is here (http://www.dominions-2.org/downloads/modding.pdf) .

Well you can still stack 1 clam and 1 fetish e.g. iirc .
And the +20 gold per scout doesn't hurt so much too .

I've come across a problem with the 2.14 client being used with games hosted by 2.12 or 2.13 servers. It can cause items to be lost, and it can also be used as an exploit, so much as I prefer staying with the same Version throughout a game (unless major gameplay "quirks" get fixed), I'd recommend migrating games to 2.14 soon.

Ygorl: what do you get on OS X?
I get this from the patch tool:
"Patch Not Applied.
You have not selected the right file"
I currently have 2.12, and apparently I'm never going to upgrade. :-(

The mac patch can only be applied to Version 2.13 or the original on CD Version. So reinstall from CD, apply patch and it should work.

Johan K:
Thank you very much for the helpful response.
Unfortunately I can't find my CD, as all of our stuff is in cardboard boxes in my mother-in-law's garage until Nov 1. Even after Nov 1 when we move into our new house, I might never find the CD.
Oh! I know -- I can ask one of my brothers to give me their CD. In fact, I'll ask them to rip it and send a copy to me so they don't have to pay international shipping fees.
Thanks!

Save the key-file before you reinstall - just in case you packed away your manual as well...

Heh -- thanks for the tip!
Actually I didn't pack away the manual, because I was using it. However, it is currently lost somewhere in the house. :-)
I'm currently trying to download patch 2.13 so I can upgrade my 2.12 to that and then upgrade again to 2.14.
By the way, how do people play with each other? PBEM? On-line servers?
So far I've only played on a LAN with my brothers and friends.

P.S. I love my Marignon paladins with blessing bonusses! I'll go search the threads for other people's thoughts on that topic...

The 2.13 patch should be available for download here (http://www.shrapnelgames.com/downloads/dom_213/dompatch213_osx.zip) (Mac 2.13 patch; I hope I didn't link to the wrong OS).
There are a few servers for TCP/IP games (such as Mosehansen (https://www.mosehansen.dk/cgi-bin/dom2.pl) ), but other games are done via PBEM, especially if you cannot find a spot on one of the public TCP/IP servers.
Using a server is very useful if you want quick games and/or cannot find a reliable host for a PBEM game. Otherwise, I must admit I tend to prefer a PBEM game; but then, I prefer to keep it simple when possible (that, and I can no longer do TCP/IP).

Thanks! Applying 2.13 followed by applying 2.14 worked!
:-)
Now I want to get into a game. I don't know how to do PBEM, but I guess I can figure it out.

To play a PBEM game:
* Find an open PBEM game (duh!)
* Make a Pretender for your nation, and send the .2h file in the newlords directory for this nation. If you are playing Man, you should send the man.2h file contained in the Newlords directory to your host.
* The host will send the turn files to the players. Put the turn file (man.trn in this case) in a game directory (for example, PBEM), launch the game and play your turn for this game (which would be called PBEM here).
* Send the .2h file contained in the game directory to your host. So in this case, you would send the man.2h file in the PBEM directory.
* Repeat the process as next turn is sen.
For a TCP/IP game:
* Make your Pretender, then connect to the game. The IP and the port will be given to you by the host.
* Select the nation you want to play; it will upload your Pretender.
* Once the game has started, connect to the game and select your nation. Then play your turn as usual, and it will be uploaded once you end your turn.
* You may also need to register at a site when playing a TCP/IP game; it is true of Mosehansen at least.
