I have noticed that most net games are set up without victory conditions. For games with a half dozen or so players that makes sence, but for the 17 player huge maps, like Faerun, it seems to me that a single victor and a definative conclusion are very unlikely.

So why? Are there known flaws with the VCs, do people just perfer a free form end, or what?

I think it's that some of the people who like to start the huge map games do so because they like huge long drawn out end games.

Many of us who don't want a game to go for six months, and take 2 hours per turn for the Last hundred or two turns, don't use the hugest maps, and even on the moderately large prefer victory conditions, either by victory points, by territory (51-66% of provinces) or by capturing enough capitals. I've never seen one done by research or dominion yet.

I've played games where victory was by dominion, but it's tricky to pick an appropriate number so that the game isn't over too quickly or take too long.

*whips Graeme* Yes, there is a fine line of finding the right kind of "fun" game with Dominion. Though it's also fun to do designs around high end dominion to really push it out.

Graeme can attest that the game can get really interesting right when someone comes down with just enough Dominion to win and the victory is so much sweeter.
