I have claimed Ctis. Nappa has claimed Pangaea (do you see a pattern here? http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif).

Please claim your spot in this thread before uploading, and DO NOT hit "Start Game" after uploading! Thank you http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif

Might also be that some people don't like very difficult research (having gotten enough of that in Cohen's many games) or indies-9. Or, like myself, they prefer to get into games using Zen's pretenders mod.

Anyways, good luck.

Awhoops, research is actually meant to be set at hard, as per the web link.

I could be convinced to use the pretender mod... I just figured I would see if anyone actually wants to play unmodded games. Any comments for or against, form those already committed?

I am okay with pretender mod as long as we use scales mods with it, and while we r at it why dont we use the Fearen test mod(from fools lamment 3)

Soapyfrog
December 7th, 2004, 05:00 PM
We could do that, of course I am in favour of the idea... although people might balk at the more extensive spell/item modding.

All in favour say aye?

Cainehill

Just to point out, Zen's scale mod is currently broken: the 19 protection fanatics are bad enough as a random event, but they also take the place of independent militia, as well as the militia that are recruitable by nations such as Man and that show up as PD troops for others (such as Pythium).

While the resource cost is high (29) for recruiting, think of Pythium with 20 sacred 19 protection fanatics for the cost of 10 PD. IMO, it's totally unbalanced until the militia/fanatics issue is fixed.

Edit: Unlike Marignon's fanatics, these ones from the mod are non-sacred, but it still gives a big, unintended, boost to those nations with 16 morale, 19 armor, PD.

Soapyfrog
December 7th, 2004, 05:20 PM
The mod compilation I am using does not include Zen's scale mod, or the replacement of militia with fanatics.

This mod currently affects the scales as follows:

#turmoilevents 3

#deathsupply 30
#deathdeath 5

#slothincome 3
#slothresources 25

#misfortune 15
#luckevents 15

That's it! Just a basic nerf to the most abused scales.

Well, shucks... I am losing big time in the Newbie Slugfest... so, maybe I could bring my own special magic (um, ineptitude) to this game? May I?

I'd play Marignon.

Which means ... Sloth hurts more, death hurts more - do growth and productivity also help more? And I'm guessing the #turmoilevents is reducing the impact of order/turmoil on events happening, while #misfortune/luckevents is ... increasing the likelihood of an event being good or bad, and making luck/misfortune cause more events?

What I'm personally more concerned with is the magic / items modding, were your full set of mods be used - myself, I prefer to avoid variants (mods) that change the whole game, because the skills and tactics aren't applicable to the usual game, and vice versa. Fun if you have time to spend a bunch of time playing the variant SP to learn the impact of the changes, but...

(Zen's Pretender mod doesn't, imo, have a deep impact on gameplay; his others may not be as transparent but on the other paw may be on their way to becoming at least a de facto standard.)

I understand that, and indeed this mod is totally meant to change the tactical and strategic calculus of the game. The whole point is to take those things that most players do to the exclusion of all else and make them less obvious, while taking those things that are generally ignored and making them a little more attractive.

(Zen's Pretender mod doesn't, imo, have a deep impact on gameplay; his others may not be as transparent but on the other paw may be on their way to becoming at least a de facto standard.)

Which is why this mod uses the pretender and spell mod as a very solid base. But you are totally right, this mod is making some sweeping changes, all things considered, form vanilla dom2.

In any case in the original spirit of trying to keep this game as unmodded as possible, how about we just use Zen's pretender mod, and leave it at that? Any objections?

Still tweaking and testing pretender setups, since I haven't done Pythium since way back in my newbie days. Sounding like others were hoping for a Sunday start time - Satyrday night okay for my pretender upload? I'll slot something in by whenever, but could use the time.

Ok we are full!

We may have one extra player, a friend of mine, relative newbie, wants to try a quick game. So we may have an 11 player. That 10 land and 1 sea... ouch.

Still have to edit the map, will look at that straight away.

Soapyfrog

DragonFire11
December 13th, 2004, 01:04 PM
I thought it was 'pike' so I googled both terms and each provided results, although more with your understanding. I checked the script, but it seems that it was something they added on the fly. I recall, however, from watching the commentary that Bill Paxon's kid loves that particular line and repeats it all the time and I heard it as 'pike.' So the bottom line is I don't know. Next time I watch the film I will pay close attention. Until then, both terms are fairly close in meaning, but I prefer the sound of 'pike' over 'pipe.' You may be right however . . .

Soapyfrog
December 13th, 2004, 02:17 PM
I always thought it was "pipe" as in some kind of slang for the correct approach vector... I am not sure I would WANT to be "in the pike"... sounds fishy http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/laugh.gif

Alrighty who votes we start the server tonight, Legacyspy or no Legacyspy?

Not sure about the IP address, but using the name works. My shortcut works for it just fine ( "C:\Program Files\dominions2\dom2.exe" --tcpclient --ipadr soapyfrog.no-ip.info --port 2348 ). The IP address is currently 24.203.110.39.

DragonFire11
December 14th, 2004, 01:38 AM
Ouch! I had extracted the mod in the dom folder not the map folder. Hmmm. It seems too late to fix the error. Any thoughts?

Cainehill
December 14th, 2004, 02:22 AM
I take it you haven't used mods before? You have to turn on the mod (via the Preferences menu option) before creating your pretender. If you didn't have it in the right place, you definately didn't turn it on. *mutter*

Hmmm. I was thinking there was a way to salvage things, if soapy saved the other .2h files and deleted the game directory before recreating the game and directory and copy the .2h files back in, so only you had to upload your pretender.

Sadly, since Illwinter misuses, or at least reuses the .2h file format both for pretender upload and the regular "to host" (.2h) turn files, everyone's pretender uploads are already overwritten. So unless soapyfrog saved the original .2h files containing pretenders, the only "fix" would be to restart the game, probably forcing many players to recreate pretenders.

I take it you're like, mmm, an archmage with no magic paths or something similarly, mmm, if not 'unplayable' at least 'uncompetitive'?

Soapy's game - his call on restarting the game from scratch or letting you have a choice, where either you play things out or go AI. Either way, don't feel too bad - I've been in multiple games where it had to be restarted 3 times or so because people didn't get the mods right.

(Which begs the question of whether someone has asked, in the Dom3 Wishlist, for a game server that _checks_ to make sure various things were done correctly in a pretender's creation - mods would be the most blatantly obvious / required setting, but also things like 'human' pretenders only, immobiles only, no magic paths added, etc.)

Or at least - using a ".god" file to upload the pretender, and issuing notifications to _everyone_ if someone had messed up with their pretender vice the game settings. That way, the host could run the first turn, check and see if everything was okay, and if a player or two had goofed, email them to upload a corrected pretender, while keeping what everyone else had sent up.

If he were, wouldn't we all be informed of it? (-foo- has cheated...)

What's the error message like, Dragonfire? If it's like 'can't locate file xxx.dm', it can be fixed by placing the desired file in the desired place.

Soapyfrog
December 14th, 2004, 09:21 AM
I can rollback to setup, since I prudently saved the files before kicking off the server. For now I will put the server hosting on hold until we have determined that there is a problem.

I'd rather wait to see what new bugs (if any) have been introduced, as it doesn't sound like anything in the patch is going to affect the early game (call of the wind into sea provinces isn't likely until someone has Soulstone of the Wolves to make it free, imo).

Cainehill

I'm guessing it's been reset to insanely slow to keep Legacyspy from staling. Personally, if someone can't be bothered to take even their early turns, when presumably nothing should have come up to interfere with getting 5-10 minutes in, I think they ought to be set to AI - they're only going to get worse as the turns take longer.

It'd be one thing if he'd posted something saying he was going to be unable to take his turn; I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of players want the game slowed or paused during this holiday season, for instance.

Edit: Sheesh - Legacyspy also decided to skip the first three turns in the Fools Lament III game. He's posting today, but not taking his turns. We going to go to 240 hour QH so there's a chance he might not stale?

The_Tauren13
December 18th, 2004, 04:01 PM

Hey! I am off to Texas for a bizarre Christmas in Houston. The fun starts on December 24 and ends on December 27.

What this means is that I won't be able to play my turns.

Shall I find a substitute, or is there a plan to put the game a little on hold during that time anyway?

Hi Frog!! Is it required that I delete the game folder before playing the next turn?

This is getting old.

Soapyfrog
January 8th, 2005, 06:21 PM
Hmm that is very odd... it should not have staled your turn!

I look in the savegame folder and it recorded your trn file but no 2h file. Everyone else has a 2h file recorded except you and Pangaea.

Could be a problem with the savegame utility not catching your 2h file for some reason http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/frown.gif. I will strive to ensure it does not happen again... i.e. if I have rehost for some reason I will not do so until I know I have everyone's 2h file from the previous turn.

Soapyfrog
January 10th, 2005, 07:35 PM

Scene I: An army of peasants wants to enlist in the Abysian army.

Peasant: We will fight for our god!
Warlord: Your God? You know if the Abysians win this war we will enslave all humans...
Peasant: Yes, but you pay well, and since our morale is so low, chances are we will run before we have to actually fight. So really, it’s a good deal. For us.
Warlord: Why would we pay you anything? You're useless!
Peasant: Well, you won't actually pay us. We'll just show up and take your money when we want it.
Warlord: Oh yeah? (raises mace)
Peasant: Oh and by the way, you can't kill your own troops. (the Warlord’s mace mysteriously fails to harm the peasant)
Warlord: What? Nobody said you were on our side? In fact, I said you weren't.
Peasant: Yeah, but we need the money. Think of it as welfare.
Warlord: There is no welfare in Abysia, you fool. We don't support, we oppress!
Peasant: Right. Call us if you need us. Not that you ever will.
Warlord: (looks around) There's got to be an enemy province around. Somewhere to get you guys killed.
Peasant: (laughs) Haha, see! That's our plan. You can give me my half of a gold coin for this month now, I need a drink.

Scene II: The Warlord tries to explain to his God what happened.

Vampire Queen: Let me get this straight. You hired a band of militia? On whose orders?
Warlord: Their orders, my Queen.
Vampire Queen: What? I fail to comprehend. Who is 'their'?
Warlord: The peasants themselves, my Queen.
Vampire Queen: You're taking orders from humans? I have no use for you. (begins to drain the Warlord's life)
Warlord: Wait! No! You can't kill your own troops!
Vampire Queen: Yes, but you aren't exactly real. I haven't actually recruited any Warlords. You're just a plot device. A now unneeded plot device, to be exact. Goodbye.
Warlord: No! (the Warlord falls to the floor dead)
Vampire Queen: (turns to another not really real Warlord) Find a way to get those peasants killed!
New Warlord: Yes, my Queen.

Scene III: The Warlord leads the greedy peasant army to the C'tis border.

Peasant: You're not going to start a war just to get us killed, are you? That would be stupid!
Warlord: Just following orders. Come along now.
Peasant: Wait. Because you haven't actually been recruited, we don't have to follow you. You don't have enough leadership!
Warlord: Fine. (goes to the capitol, gets officially recruited, comes back) Ok peasants, time to die.
Peasant: Oh no! He has 50 leadership!

Scene IV: The peasants attack a C'tis province in which there is only 1 PD.

C'tis Commander: What, why are you attacking? We have a border agreement! Treachery! Villains!
Warlord: Hey, calm down. We just need you to kill these peasants for us.
Peasant: Oops, we just failed a bunch of morale checks. Run away!
Warlord: Damnit. Chase after them! Kill them!
C'tis Commander: Hey, you can't order my troops around! Troops, hold your ground!
Warlord: Damnit again. Guess we have to keep paying them.

Scene V: Sadly, the Abysian Empire's finances were not sufficient to finish the production. There is no Scene V.

Could we perhaps go to a slightly slower hosting, like 24 hour no quick host at least, or 48 QH? Maybe it's me, but it seems like each morning I check the game with 8 and 9:30 am, and one day there's twelve hours to go, the next day there's 20 minutes, then a stale.

An Caelum is finally vanquished. DragonFire11 put up a valiant fight.

I was quite lucky on the assault... my one flying unit, a well equipped banelord, managed to draw a large portion of flase horror and ghost wolf summons to himself so my hasted vine ogres were not tied up in the gateway for too long.

He managed to survive the battle, albeit blinded, and acted as a lightning rod as the rest of my army smashed its way into the fort. He was basically saved by the innacuracy of the wither bones cast at him, and of course, sweet sweet life drain. At that point, the advantage swung towards me as my surviving vine ogres and infantry flooded into the fort and slaughtered Caelum's heavily fatigued mages and pretender.

Over all between lightning, orb lightning, wither bones, banish, frozen heart I lost something like 40% of my troops, but thankfully no commanders.

Good game Dragon!!! Sorry about the long build up before the assualt... I was REALLY paranoid after the drubbing you gave me the last time I tried to go in there http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif
