The 'Shepherds of Creation' scenario is now ready.

-------------

Game Concept:

Seven players.
One strong AI.
First player to conquer the AI home will win.

Baphomet is a mighty pretender run by the AI. His home is at the center of the world. The first shepherd to conquer the throne of the world wins the scenario.

The rich lands in the center of the world is owned by Baphomet. The lands close to the Rim of Darkness (the lands where the divine light of Baphomet has not fallen ) are poor but richer in magical resources.

Cooperation might be necessary to survive, but a quick grab of another shepherd's lands might also give a player power enough to strike sucessfully at Baphomet.

Mythic Concept:

A demiurge and false god named Baphomet believes he has created the world. Baphomet creates seven shepherds of creation to govern and guide the seven reaches of his lands. Baphomet creates mankind and humanity begins to worship him. Baphomet is filled with pride and he ignores his other servants.

The seven demigods were given divine spirit. The shepherds uses their given divinity to create intelligent life like Baphomet did. Thier creations start to worship them as lords.

Baphomet discovers the apostacy and decides to punish the shepherds. From his throne of power he summons three angels to lead his human armies against the apostatic shepherds.

The Shepherds realize that if one of them would conquer the throne of the world Baphomet would loose his powers and the world would se a new lord.

-------------

All games are setup by me. Gods are predesigned and I will give each player his password. The map file will not be released (not for a while) to give all players the same starting opportunities.

I intended to keep a server running for all games, but I'm not sure how many that means. If a group of players can keep their own server I will gladly send over fatherland files etc once the game begins.

I had intended to setup games as 48h quickhost games (no longer than 48h between turns, but faster if everyone is ready). Hmm, perhaps I should give you choices.

I wouldn't mind some AAR/trash talk threads regarding the scenario. I suspect that AAR writers will take longer turns making these games less of spoilers than they might appear at first glance. Perhaps a special AAR game with even longer hosting interval.

---------------

How to sign up!

1:
If you and your six friends has decided that you want to start a shepherd scenario, just send me a mail with the names and adresses of all participants. I will setup a game and send each player a turn file and a password. If you want to host the game by yourselves tell me where to send the fatherland.

2:
If you want to join a game hosted by me look in this thread at available games and make a post claiming a place as a given god. First claimant gets it. I will edit this post when new games are open and new players have signed up.

Three games and two private ones are now running. Illwinter will not host new ones for a while, but if you can host games by yourself I'll gladly start up a game and send it to the host and passwords to the players.

When the current games are coming to an end We'll start up a couple of new ones if there is interest.

Questions are welcome. I have probably missed something.

After a game is filled up it might take a day or two before the game starts. It is nothing to worry about, just me teaching kids about religion or something else.

Hmm, all the pretenders look so interesting, I'm having trouble deciding http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif. Would it be possible to claim a god in both games?

Kristoffer O
February 22nd, 2005, 05:45 PM
Wait for a day or two. I would like to know how much interest this will attract before I make any promises.

As long as your two gods are not neighbors it shouldn't be a problem (the old use-one-to-explore-for-your-other-god cheat).

quantum_mechani

Ok, in that case I'll just claim Euryale in game one for now.

Would it be possible for someone not related to Illwinter to create a PBEM game using this scenario? I gather it would be fine, as you have offered to send the fatherland file for outside hosts.

I am asking this because I have a strong distaste towards TCP/IP, and the feeling is shared: I can only connect to a Dominions server once in a blue moon, and that's when I am lucky. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif

I call Vanheim! =)

I proclaim myself Järnsaxa "Cherry" Deathbringer, Ruler of Cold, Goddess of Gangrenous Frostbite, Sacrificer of Innocent Blood, Protector of Kittens, Bunnies, Lambs and Flowers.

Kristoffer O
February 22nd, 2005, 06:18 PM
Alneyan: That would be fine. It means less for me to do. I have to send passwords to all players anyway so sending the first trn to everyone and a fatherland to one player is no big issue.

I have no intention to host PBEM games, but if someone is willing to do I can set up a signup for PBEM as well.

Järnsaxa "Cherry" Deathbringer, Ruler of Cold, Goddess of Gangrenous Frostbite, Sacrificer of Innocent Blood, Protector of Kittens, Bunnies, Lambs and Flowers is placed in the first game as no prefereces were made.

I noticed your post on the French boards, so I guess I will play there instead (PBEM games are more common than TCP/IP there, so it should work out quite nicely).

If there is interest in a PBEM game, I can host it without being a player. The turnaround would be either 24 or 48 hours with limited quickhosting (48 hours is safer, but if all players send in their turns within 24 hours, it would be effectively a 24 hours game).

What are the research settings for these games? I ask because I only play difficult-very difficult research. Not that I need another game, but if one of these was with a more difficult research setting, how could I refuse? http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif

Kristoffer O
February 23rd, 2005, 09:19 AM
Intended setup is normal research, but we can change the second game into a 48h difficult research game if you like. No one seems to care about if the host interval is 24 or 48 h anyway.

I'm not sure how slower research will affect the game, but I would guess that Baphomet becomes even more powerful. Can prove interesting.

Yeech! Baphomet made his Shepherds really flawed. No wonder they turned against him - I sympatize. In any case, I am willing to perch on Jarnsaxa's shoulder as she takes her revenge on her creator.

A combat pretender with no water magic and a Vanir leader who discourages magic. That will be a change for me :-)

No, you probably don't have it! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif A dom2-map consists of a graphics file (.tga) and mapfile (.map). The .tga is required for playing, while the .map is only required to set up a new game. The downloadable shepherdsmap.zip contains only a faked .map file, which does not hold any unusal information about the scenario (just neighborship relations), but allows to play the map without any features of the scenario.

Illwinter will setup a game for you using the proper .map file, so this is nothing to worry about. The reason is, that players cannot simply look into the mapfile to see how the scenario is scripted (e.g. which province has which sites, defending commanders having precious items, preste-castles, pre-set villains for the central AI, etc.). So this is done to keep some surprises for everyone!

Hmm, but is the .tga file the actual map? I thought it was going to be "shrouded" or is the "shrouding" they're talking about have to do with the missing .map file? thx

Game 3 is currently watiting on the first turn for Yvelina (Vanheim). I heard a rumor that she was taking some time off Dominions for school-related reasons. Will the ongoing Shepherd Games be updated and restarted with v2.16? When?

Non of my group encountered connection problems. If the version caused connection problems, then maybe not all of the shepherd games run on 2.16 then?

There really should be a way for the client to check the server's version! This way one could easily avoid all those version problems, which arise especially when playing with people from all over the world...

If Caelum took their turn now, everyone else could do the next turn, and then Jarkko could make a double turn when he returns. I mean - turn 3, it'd only take 2 minutes max to do the turn and help get things moving again.

Set him to AI, or kill the game?

Jurri
April 29th, 2005, 05:30 PM
Oh, yeah, game 1 ended recently (turn ~50ish)... Thanks Kristoffer, it was rather fun. Although I'm not sure if the format works; the AI is somewhat disappointing to play against even with the lead it's given, as it only encourages a passive-aggressive stance against it. (That is to say, fool it into not attacking and hope it harasses someone else instead!) That said, the map is beautiful and the prose pretty entertaining. And although the big B was almost just a random factor, we had a good game, IMO, between us Shepherds trying to be the first to take the castle. So, thanks again, it was most certainly a worthwhile experiment!

Cainehill
April 30th, 2005, 10:32 AM
Given how long we've been waiting on Caelum since Jurri's return, I'm wondering what's up.

Is the timer going to be set again? Caelum set to AI? The game killed and another set of players recruited, given the odds that half the players have forgotten about it in the 2 weeks since the last turn?

josh_f
May 1st, 2005, 12:29 PM
Why don't we do a roll call of who is still interested, if we are only missing Caelum we can probable find sub easily as it is only the second turn. If we are missing more people we can put up a new sign up and restart the game.
I will start
josh_f, Atlantis here.

Seems it's going to have to be a restart - I'd prefer either C'tis or Atlantis since I haven't played either in ages, if their original players have dropped out or otherwise choose a different race.

Otherwise I'll stick with Vanheim if I have to - suspect a negative 2 magic scale makes this _the_ most unpopular of the seven, especially with the difficult magic research being the norm.

I am C'Tis in the "Huntsman" shepards game. Whenever I try to view a battle replay involving a non-C'Tis pretender the game crashes with "myloadmalloc: can't open ./mods/./shepards/nereus1.tga" (or whichever pretender is involved)

When I installed the mod, it did not make a mods/shepards directory. I made one manually and copied all the shepards files there, but I still get the crash.

on my machine the mod creates a subdirectory called ".xvpics" in the shepherds directory.

There is a nereus1.tga among a few other files in there, so try if it works once you create the folder and move the files there.
The file in the .xvpics directory is much smaller(3.58kb) than the nereus1.tga in the shepherds directory(48 kb). So maybe you have the wrong one in the shepherds directory.

Hope it works so you can witness the awesomeness that my pretender is http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif .

Thanks Turin - that was the problem. Whatever I used ti unzip did not create the .xvpics directory (and the XP GUI would not let me create a directory with a leading . I had to open a command prompt to make it)

Your pretender is, indeed, one badass mofo.

Could someone please set the Huntsman game back to 48-hour forced hosting? Thanks!

Well - one month since Shepherds 3 died prematurely. Is Illwinter still around; I haven't noticed them posting in that time, and there was certainly interest in restarting the game.

Hi, I havn't been around lately.

Huntsmans game will get 48 h force host.

Shepherds 3 can be restarted. How many interested? Same players or new ones?

Not as much as I would like, but things are changing. My students have left now. Days are less hectic and vacation is drawing near.

I for one would be interested - suspect it'll have to be new players, as it's been so long.

Is it possible to get the password for one of my players (in the Huntsman game)? He doesn't play anymore and he's all but destroyed so I'd like to set him to AI to speed up our game. If you could email or PM me I would appreciate it! Thanks!

I am or rather was playing sheperds 2 (as Rudra).
It seems the rest of the players, except Pangea had lost interest.
Just when things got interesting http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/frown.gif

I'm Pan in Sheperds 2. This is actually the first game I've been in (out of maybe 10 - 12) that stopped because multiple nations stopped playing. That's unfortunate. Most of the games I've played in have moved along at a nice pace (usually, first 24h, then 48h).

I wasn't going to win. My strategy was to make a beeline for the capital. I got there relatively quickly with a force of White Centaurs, but then found that the fortress had a defense of 500. So it was taking me a while to besiege. Then C'tis started Ghost Ridering me every turn, so that was basically it. I destroyed some of his small armies that would follow up his Ghost Rider attacks, but he would just attrition me again with the Ghost Riders.

Ah well, it was fun while it lasted. Thanks for the game http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

I was Caelum in this game.
At the point the game stopped I had many high power summons, some high level spells and strong, mobile mage armies.
hehe, I was just at the point capturing the capital with an air queen led army when the game stopped.

Yes it was fun experience, very different from your usuall MP game.
Great idea Illwinter, thanks for that!

Battle inconsistencies: I my shepherds game I encounter irritating battle replays for _several_ turns now. Some units are not moving at all, some move erratically, some just drop dead for no apparent reason.

Could it be again that the Shepherds Server is already running some not-yet-official patch? I am running 2.16 and there is not an accessible newer version right now, right?

@Illwinter: For example, watch the current turn for Vanheim in the Shepchaz-game on your server, Battle at Dathen. Watch Baphomet's Juggernaut. It moves one or two squares and then remains idle for 2 or 3 rounds while being in perfect health. Next step, 200HP spontaneously explode with a little cloud of blood for no apparent reason! No spell cast, no spell effect displayed, however the timing corresponds to the evaluation of my wraith lords' soul vortex effect - but the Juggernaut was alone in his corner and my wraith lords were engaged with other units somewhere else. How can 200HP vanish in an instant? None of my units has a magical item for instant-killing magical units...oh, I am running on Linux. And my mages also did not everything as scripted, but I guess this is normal business, although I fail to see why the AI e.g. replaces a "summon storm power" during a storm with a mere "blessing". Maybe its heroic quickness and quickness being combined that causes troubles here...

Thanks!

Hi, is it still inconsistent? I didn't check the turn in question so i missed the battle in Dathen I believe.

A mindless being without leadership can take 999 hp dmg in an instant.

I do not think this will affect the game but some files used in dom3 are also used in dom2. If there has been an accidental compilation of dom2 there might be a possibility of inconsistencies, but I doubt it. We havn't worked on dom2 recently.

Quickness have been a cause for trouble so it is not unlikely.

Owh! That might explain the exploding juggernaut, for it was definitely at the end of the battle where all magical leaders might have been defeated already. I wonder though why it did not move and attack in earlier turns, for there were mages present (do magical leaders have to be conscious? If so then the Marignon Fire spellcasters might have knocked themselves of in the storm immediately).

In previous turns, I noted Bane Lords and Wraith Lords wearing Boots of Quickness to behave irratically, i.e. moving back and forth and displaying attak actions with no visible enemy. However, that occurred all in big battles and there were always quickened people around (by spell, by boots & jade armor and by heroic quickness).

There was no notable battle this turn, but I'll watch closely now and save the files the next time...
