Here's a picture of a black servant after 4 turns with a BVC.

The Bane Venom Charm gives you kill xp for every civillian you kill with it. If you don't mind depopulating a province, it's like a ginormous pile of Champion's Skulls. If you want to depopulate a province, it's a ginormous pile of Champion's Skulls that also depopulate provinces for you. Win/Win.
Bane Venom Charms should not give the character XP for killing people with them, and I'm not really sure why they do.

Yeah, I should have posted the picture of the Hall of Fame as well. There was Orion, with 1007 experience. My prophet, with 158 experience. And this Black Servant that had never seen combat, with 25000 experience.

Thats annoying indeed . Does it still exist for the Harvester of Sorrows also ? I haven't used one lately but iirc i remember reading in a patchlog that the exp-bug with the harvester of sorrows has been fixed .

Yes, Harvesters get this too. The first round they exist they have 3-4 gray coins and most make it on to the hall of fame.

I don't think it's a bug as much as a feature http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif
Since provincial population aren't units (they're stored as a single integer), someone most likely programmed the game to give experience to commanders who decimate population in such ways. Pillaging, Black Death, etc, do not grant experience, so the mechanism appears to work solely with BVC and Harvesters.

Maybe it was deliberately done so that the killed population would count as kills for the purpose of some cute "Vengeance of the Dead"-castings. I cannot imagine that the experience effect was intended...

Maybe it is a feature, but at the very least, the experience gain should be scaled down a lot or capped. Killing one civilian shouldn't count as much as killing a soldier in battle. (Or does it?) Perhaps give credit for up to one kill per turn.

Silly people, there's no killing, only dying. Does a person dying of plague who sleeps at the town inn and gets his infected fleas in the bedding gain experience for killing townspeople? No, because he doesn't kill them, they just die of plague. Trust me, his dexterity and strength will not increase as a result of that action.
Besides, it was recognized as a bug previously http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif
