I was attacking an independent province containing only Troglodytes and they immediately started to attack each other and then retreat. Anyone else run into this?

Their leader was probably killed and because they are tramplers they attack eachother when retreating.

Aha, that may explain it, thanks!

Edit: But wait, I thought you could only trample units [i]smaller[i] than yourself.

True. Also, wouldn't healthy troglodytes move at the same speed, and never have to actually go through one another?

I witnessed something very similar to what you've described about half a year ago, in SP, but I don't recall the specifics. I'd assumed someone else could verify this vaguely buglike phenomenon, saving me the trouble.
All I can tell you with any degree of certainty is that at one point, within the first few turns of a battle, a bunch of indie troglodytes started routing and attacking one another. I'm also nearly certain they did this AFTER routing my own army(In the first two turns, if memory serves. Which it does not).

Edit: Whoops, somehow messed up the italics tag in the quoted text. No idea how. Possibly buggy BBCode, probably buggy user.

you can only trample units smaller than yourself. If they are the same size, they use their regular attack. No idea if it's a feature or bug.

I think in dominions battles units are moved one at a time. So if the troglodyte at the front starts moving backwards the troglodytes behind him haven't moved yet.
