Sorry to ask a stupid question or two, but I've been trying and failing to set up an TCP/IP game. Me and my flatmate have a home network now and want to play a game of D2 but cant seem to make it work

I followed the manuals instrcutions, load up D2, create a server and then Alt-Tab and load up D2 again to connect

But it causes a massive slowdown on my PC and means the music becomes garbled and basically makes the whole thing unplayable.

I'm pretty sure there is an obvious answer to this one..

Cheers

You should reduce the graphic options of the server Dominion window, by lowering the resolution, disabling the music... and so on. There may be a way of running the server in a command line, but there doesn't appear to be anything about this in the commandline switches doc file.

There is a text-only mode. And also a "host and quit" switch. both are often used by servers running more than one game at a time. Id have to dig into my old old notes to find a commandline example though.

Textonly mode is really simple:

Basically:
dom2 --tcpserver --textonly --nosound --nomusic

For a LAN game you'll want to host turns as soon as they're in:
--quickhost

The only thing missing is the port and the map:
--port #portnumber# --mapfile #mapfile#

Last parameter ist the name of the game.
#game#

Other switches you might want to use:
--hofsize
--indepstr
--research
--magicsites
