View Full Version : Now Running: Mosehansen Game, Paradise Lost
Cainehill
June 3rd, 2005, 05:56 PM
Since the Shahrivar map couldn't be used, I buried the slot and have started a new game on mosehansen.dk : Paradise Lost is using Zen's tweaked version of Jason Lutes' Cradle of Dominion map. ( Map can be found in Illwinter's maps section (http://www.illwinter.com/dom2/maps.html). )
No mods, I'll kick it off when there's 8 to 10 players, and it's a victory point game - 11 out of 20 VPs to win.

Currently 4 players in, 5 counting myself taking Abysia, looking for at least 3 more players. No mods, no nonsense, no survivors, er, monstrous independents (9).

No problems so far with indies 9, but what about:
Hall fo fame?
Research?
Richness?
I would say: 15, difficult and normal!
Cainehill
June 8th, 2005, 02:12 PM
It's 15, normal, normal - the only thing I mentioned as being unusual was independent strength. Changing research would mean restarting the game, since a number of pretender strategies are unviable with difficult research ( combatant immobiles, for example ).
Hoping to get another couple of players, if not I'm considering kicking it off Friday night anyway - at least we'll all have some room to expand. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif

Hi, can i play?
Cainehill
June 8th, 2005, 05:16 PM
Sure - if you register on www.mosehansen.dk (http://www.mosehansen.dk) you'll be able to check there to see when turns have run and whatnot, or simply create a pretender with no mods turned on, and connect to the server, mosehansen.dk port 2210.

I mistakenly uploaded a Machaka pretender to this game, it should be cleared. I was looking to upload a different pretender, but was still deciding if I wanted to play in an Indy 9 game or not. Thanks! I'll let you know if I decide to upload a different race.
Cainehill
June 9th, 2005, 10:56 PM
Okay - cleared Machaka. Hopefully you'll decide you want in; it's quite a different early-mid game with the strong independents.

Ok, I'm in as Arco. Pretender uploaded, I'll give it a go, see how long I last.

Yes, I'd like to get a few turns in tonight, definitely. So I say you kick it off early early evening, like mid-afternoon. hehehe
Cainehill
June 10th, 2005, 04:50 PM
Heh. Well, no one else has mentioned any interested in joining, so I'll probably kick it off in a couple hours. No guarantee we'll get multiple turns in tonight, not with people in different countries, timezones, and simply having other plans for a Friday night.

Game started with cradlez14 for the map - one of Zen's tweaked Cradle of Dominions maps - since zencradle was nagot gick fel-ing.
Anyways - it's up and running.

where is it located to download?
Cainehill

You don't have Cradle of Dominion? Snag it from http://www.illwinter.com/dom2/maps.html It's about a 7.5 megabyte download.

IMPORTANT FOR BEGINNERS
A small tutorial for those who connect the first time to such a online game: After you made your turn, youn have to exit(via end turn - >> exit) and connect again, then you will get a message that your turn has been uploaded!
Cheers

In addition, cradlez14 uses a tga file with a different name than regular Cradle, so you will need to copy your cradle.tga file and rename it cradlez14.tga (unless Caine changed the #imagefile in the .map file he used).

Feh. Nope - used what was on mosehansen, didn't realize that it required a renamed, duplicate copy of the .tga file. Not sure why it does, since I believe the two image files are exact duplicates - just a waste of disk space.

New turn in 9 minutes - looks like Pythium and Ulm will stale this time.
Edit : Pythium got in at the last moment. My intention is to set nations to AI if they stale repeatedly too often. Right now the game is waiting on Ulm and Atlantis again.

Wow... this could be an "interesting" game for me. At least I will try to make it interesting. But I made the mistake of experimenting with scales with this pretender, not knowing that sloth 1 and cold 2 gives you NO income (after turn 2). -sigh-
But we will prevail. Go Arco!!!
Cainehill
June 14th, 2005, 11:23 PM
No income? That doesn't sound right - did you get an event that increased unrest, or have your taxes set too low? Bah! You have a higher income than Abysia or Ulm, what're you talking about? http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif
( And I'll bet you haven't lost a temple, and had capitol unrest go to 49 via events already! )
Shmonk
June 15th, 2005, 12:17 AM
Okay, I guess I do have a higher income than some. But dang, I did/will lose my pretender (I need to, he got cursed attacking the 1 indy province I was able to attack), so among his various maladies, he's feeble-minded. And I didn't know you can't even search for sites this way. Let's just say he's going after an indy province solo, so he can be "reborn" with a vengeance on the remaining inhabitants of this measly world.
Cainehill
June 15th, 2005, 12:44 AM
Cursed? Ouch - lizards, eh? I always try to avoid those, especially with my pretender.
Note that if you get your pretender killed off, there's only a chance that afflictions will go away when he comes back. And oh! You're arcoscephale, right? Do not kill him off, your priestesses can heal his wounds, as long as you didn't choose an undead pretender.
Shmonk
June 15th, 2005, 01:22 AM
hehehe Yep, lizards. And I realized that about my priestesses, that they can heal me, as I went back to play my turn some more. But thanks for the reminder, I would've kicked myself if I did just that. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

New turn, and near as I can tell, Ulm still didn't move - I'm not sure about Pythium.
Ulm goes AI as soon as I notice the game waiting on him.
GriffinOfBuerrig
June 16th, 2005, 12:19 PM
I am also not sure about pythium, lets wait that turn and if we still have a bad feeling about both - set them to AI.

Okay, what's up with the bad luck? I'm at Luck +1, yet my unrest in my province is up to 50 due to 2 random events this turn, plus 1 in the previous turn or turn before that. And we're only on turn 9. How many brigands can take up residence in my capital for crying out loud??
<<Grrr!>>
Cainehill
June 18th, 2005, 12:18 PM
That's one of the reasons Zen (and others) have modded the luck scale. Unmodded, even a positive luck scale in effect increases the likelihood of bad events, since it causes more events in general, while not causing much of a bias towards good events.
Even with Luck 3, I've seen two horrificly bad events happen in the same early turn : pre-turn 3, the temple burns down and my capitol lost 50% of its population. Oooh, I felt LUCKY!! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif

Well, the next turn has hosted, and we've all played except Pythium now (which was very quick, surprisingly). Maybe we'll get in one more turn this evening, who knows.
No battles here, I'm off in my own world (or so it seems). My astrologers and mystics are contemplating the cosmos and thinking up grand schemes. My warriors are milling around, waiting for a direction. My god is looking at the surrounding indies in disgust, deciding which next to conquer. Decisions decisions.
No enemies on the horizon at all. Ulm? What's an Ulm? Haven't seen one of those in my neck of the woods. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/laugh.gif

Given how many requests there've been on other game threads, I'm going to set things to 72 or 96 hour after the turn cycles today. If all the players are still active and taking their turns, great, but we won't have people staling just because they forgot they'd be out of town or whatnot.
Cainehill
July 1st, 2005, 03:12 PM
Oh, flooding joy. Let's everyone kill Ermor, and Illwinter as well for including a spell like Burden of Time.
Shmonk

Wasn't me.
Hmm... always heard about this spell, but never been in a game with it. Can't wait to see what happens now.
Cainehill
July 1st, 2005, 03:30 PM
Your armies start picking up afflictions as though diseased. Your commanders and mages start getting afflictions, sometimes even dying right away. And you don't get a useful report that would allow you to see who get the afflictions and whatnot, so every turn you basically need to check every single one of your mages and commanders to make sure they're not diseased or otherwise about to die.
And of course if they die while carrying magic items, the magic items are lost. It's a wonderful spell that causes some players to simply go AI when it's cast because of the sheer aggravation factor the spell produces.
Dominion doesn't help against it. There's nothing you can do to protect your mages or troops - if they're not undead or lifeless, they start dropping like carrion flies.
Shmonk
July 1st, 2005, 04:49 PM
So the only able option is to dispel it, that still works I hope.
Cainehill
July 1st, 2005, 05:23 PM
Sure - if anyone has boatloads of astral gems to spend on it. Killing the caster (presuming it's not an immortal caster) would get rid of it, as will (sometimes) killing off the nation.
Shmonk
July 1st, 2005, 06:06 PM
Why boatloads? I've never used Dispel... since it looks like it cost at least 70 gems to cast, does that mean one would need at least 70 to cancel it (even though the Dispel spell only costs 30 to cast)?
Cainehill
July 1st, 2005, 07:45 PM
Well - look at Ermor's gem income, the highest in the game. Lots of that are going to be death gems, making it unlikely that he cast it with the minimum amount (which I thought was 80).
GriffinOfBuerrig
July 2nd, 2005, 06:07 AM
It was 70.
:-)
GriffinOfBuerrig
July 2nd, 2005, 01:06 PM

But while Burden of time, time is relativ.
I get a message every turn, how many units has been "strucked"
Have anyone an idea how much the percantance chance is for every unit to get afflictons?
Shmonk
July 3rd, 2005, 01:14 PM
Next turn is up.
Cainehill
July 4th, 2005, 12:17 AM
And another turn.
Shmonk
July 4th, 2005, 08:56 PM
So if a global was cast for the minimum amount for that spell + X additional gems, to cancel it with Dispel, one just needs at least X gems above the minimum cost, right?
So even though Burden of time costs 70, and let's say 10 extra was used for 80, to cancel it one wouldn't need 50 extra pearls to cancel it (since Dispel only costs 30), right? You would only need 40 (30+X). It doesn't really make it clear in the manual.
And if there are multiple globals up, you can't choose which one to Dispel, it just randomly picks one, right?
Cainehill
July 5th, 2005, 12:25 AM
Pretty sure you get asked which spell you want to target - it's only when one is being over-ridden by a new global that one is picked at random.
And while I have a cruddy astral income, I could put 10 astral in towards dispelling it, if someone's going to try. Hopefully others will do the same.
Cainehill

Does anybody have an answer for my dispel question - would I need to use at least as many gems as the global I want to cancel, or only that many more gems (X gems) over the Dispel spell's cost of 30 gems that was probably used to cast the global?

GriffinOfBuerrig
July 6th, 2005, 02:21 PM
Hey Bill, how do you do http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif
I understand dispell that way: I make burden of time for 70 Gems and put 10 Gems futher in it you will have to dispell it for 30 Astral + 10 + x Gems, so you would need at least 41 Astral gems total!

There was a death in the family (my grandmother died), and I will be out of town for a week. I'm Arco, and doing okay, currently trying to Dispel that darn Burden of Time spell.
If somebody is willing to sub a few turns, that would be great. Asking for a hold of 5 days is too much, and that's okay. So if no sub, I'd rather stale a few turns then go AI, if that's okay.

Of course, it's not that big of a deal now, considering there are 4 other globals up.

Welcome back! Now we're just waiting on Vanheim for this next turn. And checking Mosehansen and the forum here, I don't know if we know who is controlling that nation (set to Anonymous on Mose) at all. Hmm... it's the mystery player!

Yes, he has taken his turn.

Ok, I have a question. If you see you are the last to take a turn in a TCP/IP game, wouldn't you submit that turn, wait a minute for the next turn to host, then play that turn as well? I thought it was fun the few times it happens to me, to play 2 turns back to back.
Just curious, because now we're waiting on Vanheim again (who was the last player the previous turn, and didn't play the turns back to back http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/confused.gif http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/confused.gif)
Cainehill

Yes,those are awesome in the early game, and a lot of players would take the double turn right away, in the early game.
But when you're into turn 40+, and every turn takes a substantial amount of time to take, no, you can't really except (sp) some to take the next turn right away. They finallly get an hour to do the current turn, that doesn't mean they have another hour at that moment to do the next turn.
It'd be nice if it worked that way, but once you're past the first 20 turns or so, it's hard to realistically hope for.

Believe Vanheim staled again, which has me considering setting them to AI.
Any comments?
Shmonk
August 13th, 2005, 01:44 PM
I say if Vanheim stales again, then we set to AI (just to give him a chance to respond)?
Okay, I also don't like getting hit by his constant Ghost Rider attacks too. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/laugh.gif That's the real reason I like the stale option.
Whatever everyone else wants to do, set to AI before this turn ends if he doesn't submit a turn is fine.
Cainehill
August 13th, 2005, 04:08 PM
Take it you didn't get hit by any ghost riders this turn, supporting the notion that he staled? (BTW, you're sure they're not Ermorian castings?)
Shmonk
August 13th, 2005, 06:57 PM
Actually, I think's it Abysia who keeps hitting me with those Ghost Riders... he's in cahoots with Vanheim, I believe. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif

does it count if he has a province with a VP but I still hold the castle? If not, he's going to win next turn http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/frown.gif
Cainehill
August 18th, 2005, 01:05 PM
Has to hold the castle, I believe - simply besieging a victory point province doesn't give the VP, just as the person inside the fort keeps the magic sites.
And, I'm trying to drive him out of a VP province this turn, but he's also likely to take an empty aquatic VP province. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/frown.gif We'll see.

I am out in the cinema now, can someone have a look if atlantis stales(now 33 minutes left)? I have conquert a lot of his provs so it can be that he had give up!
I am quite sure that he has staled and he has not many provs or troops left? Should we make him AI?

Your stale panic? Our stale panic, as him staling might let you grab a final victory point. heh, dont worry about me. I dont have any VPS for him to take anymore. I'm dead, and you guys will soon be too. I dont think caelum realizes he only needs one more vp.
Cainehill
August 23rd, 2005, 02:40 PM
Caelum knows - I "borrowed" a VP province from him in order to summon a fort there so Ermor couldn't just blip in and win. And I just recovered two VP provinces from Ermor in the last two turns, one on land and one in the water, so now he'd need two, and we need to begin the hard slog to take some of his fortified ones back in the face of ghost riders, etc.
Shmonk
August 23rd, 2005, 03:22 PM
And, of course, he just put up that darn Arcane Nexus again. <grr>
I have to admit, this is the longest I've even been into a game (in SP I usually give up around turn 50 against the AI, just too many things happening). Now I know what it's like to get towards the end game. And everybody has SCs.
Ermor, watch out!! Arco is on the warpath.

Ermor shmermor. I tell ya, seeing that many units in play is astouding. But then it's also interesting to see 3 commanders - 2 high priestesses and a Mystic - take out 70 undead in 3 or 4 turns, before retreating, of course.
That was a few turns ago, yet I highly enjoyed that battle, and learned a few things about taking on a high volume of undead with just commanders.

Tatattattaaaaa, thank you all for that game, it was great! Never had so much fun with emor... or in any other game.
In turn ~40 i found the oak of ages(50% Entchantment bonus, i think that was the main event which let me win that game!

Congrats, good game. Might have held you off a little longer if I hadn't put a bloody dome up on the one VP province : I hate Hate HATE that friendly domes block your own spells. If my uber-lich's air trapeze hadn't bounced off the dome, or another commander's gate hadn't.... *mutter*
Again, congrats - I had a lot of fun too, finding the 40% blood site made it much cheaper to get all the unique demons - only the 2nd time I've managed to get the top 3.

I should have sought the VP between me and Ermor sooner.
Also, what is the defintion of clam-hoarding, or how many is considered "abusive"? I've read about it, but never used it until this game. I had tons of water income, but nothing to spend it on with my low level mages. So I think towards the end I had 40 or so clams. Is that a lot, or when people say they're hoarding they have like 200 or so?
I liked this game, being Arco I was pretty well rounded, and probably able to cast more spells then ever. So it was a great learning experience.
I had summoned an Abomination and Tarrasque towards the end there, gave them GoR, and was moving them towards the front lines. So that was interesting to see most spells in use.
And discovered how much I do not like Ghost Riders.
