Ahh yes, all those schools of magic... makes me want to work on that roguelike again... I actually do have a very basic roguelike engine set up in Java right now (not the original C# one), actually - all you can do is run around this empty town level, but it's progressed a lot quicker than the first time I tried such a thing, if that means anything http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/tongue.gif

We tried it in the weekend blitzes, and I think everyone wound up with quite a favorable impression of it. It makes it so that any hero you receive, you're happy to get, where before 80-90% of them (all the ones with no mage ability) were almost completely useless.
They all have some noticeably more hit points, typically somewhat better stats, often a special ability or two, and possibly an extra miscellaneous magic item slot. Now they're useful, whereas without the mod, let's face it....
You get the berserking Vanheim hero - if you don't put items on him, he dies in the first battle or two. If you do some decent items on him - he dies within five battles or so, usually losing the items for you.
Now : Farbaute has 22 HPs and 18 protection, enough to be used against independents at least. Arcos' Pathos Son of Titans now has Awe 2, 25 HPs, 25 protection and 15 strength. Seems like most of the melee heroes are now able to function as mini-thugs to one extent or another.
Gives another reason to consider Luck instead of Misfortune, and makes it worthwhile to try and keep the heroes alive, while still actually using them.

When it's been started, it won't show the vertical list of open / human nations.
Though Hubris might want to put the, mmm, "--nostart" flag or some such on, to keep someone from accidentally starting it too soon.

June 19th, 2005, 04:36 PM
Oh - before you kick the game off, you might want to copy all the pretender files (the .2h files) and save them. That way if someone didn't use the right mod or whatnot, the game can be restarted without waiting for everyone to re-upload - you'd be able to copy the originals back and only the ones that had problems need to upload again.

Simply that sometimes, on the first turn, what was Order-3 becomes Order-0, etc. I don't think it happens with Heat, Luck, or Magic, but I'm not sure. (Heat varies with seasons anyway though.)

June 25th, 2005, 02:09 PM
Yeah - best thing to do really is to create a batch file, shell script, or shortcut that'll automatically feed the IP address and port for whichever game. Don't have to worry about typos (since you can cut and paste into the command line, unlike the game's interface) and it's all set for all your games then.

Hmm, it's not working...
"The Dominions server or your connection to the internet might be down. Also make sure you entered the correct ip-address (204.251.15.174) and port number (2001)."
Here's my command line:
dom2 --tcpclient --ipadr hubrisrakarth.game-server.org --port 2001
It works just fine with the IP address you supplied (which does NOT begin with a 204)... doesn't Dom2 support hostnames, or do you really have to put in the actual IP address? http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/rolleyes.gif Or did you just mistype your hostname? http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif

Ok, so, putting Senor Kolis idea to work, I got the dyndns thing working quite well. Here's the full command line, just copy it into your shortcut's command line:
[...]\dom2.exe --tcpclient --ipadr hubrisrakarth.game-host.org --port 2001
where [...] is the path structure leading to your dom2 file.
After tomorrow I'm not going to post IP updates here, I'll just fix the dns every time. If anyone can't get this to work, let me know.

Oh, and uh... first off, man, this has got to be the most accident prone game ever. The only thing I can say is that I'm doing the best I can...
So uh... apparently my new connection is not stable enough to maintain a single IP address. It switches without even telling anyone. Good to know... now...
But this causes a problem. Since I don't know when it goes down, I can easily check and fix the URL once or twice a day, but not all the time. Which means it's unfair to have any time limit on the turns.
If there's one thing I will say about this game, it seems to be a VERY good game, and we have one of the most dedicated crowds I've ever seen. So I'm going to leave it on quickhost for now, and just trust everyone to do their turns. Also, this is all my contact information, so if it does go down, you can get in touch with me without me having to check these forums.

Something is just _wrong_ when the strongest anti-ermor nation in the game goes AI because Ermor is winning.
Especially after that nation decided to screw around with attacking another nation that hadn't done anything to them, just before going AI.
Personally, because of Hubris and Aku's actions towards peaceful Pangaea, I was, am, looking forward to kicking their tails - I'm not ready to concede anything.

Hopefully Hubris hasn't already gone AI, "conceding" to Ermor when he has his pretender sitting on Pangaea's capitol, when he had enough fire gems to set off a Flames From the Sky on that capitol, instead of going after Ermor.

I am the last player but if i do my turn then Marignon is AI.
So i have to wait with my turn until we decide what to do that Marignon has still the possibility to cancel his turning into AI.
So far i have not damaged Marignon severely, he still has a Fireking SC and lots of Provinces.
Abysia is not severely damaged yet neither, i killed one of his ADs, but thanks to lots of mages/priests and purgatory i didn't advance deep in his territory yet neihter.
So if Archeo would take over Marignon i am positive that he would still find means to at least annoy me greatly and maybe even have a chance. I think that i am in a good position to win the game but it is not yet over.
I am fine with either way and will accept what the majority choses.
So we can end the game right now and declare me winner or continue it with Archeo as marignon and fight it out till the end.
Edit: The server is now down http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/mad.gif.

Boron (Ermor) has been staying connected (according to the server display) but isn't bothering to do his turns since he discovered MtG, not here and not in the anonymous game. "Burn him! He looks like a witch!"
Mods, unless I'm mistaken, are all latest versions of Zen's mods, as done by Zen. No hero mod, no Retribution mod.

Sorry Arch,
Caine refused peace. So I will fight Caine until he is dead. Caine didnt like the idea of everyone fighting Boron.
Also I dont know wtf Caine is smoking by giving Hubris such a hard time about wanting to give up the game to Boron when he was the only one with a chance against Boron and now hes going to be dead in the next few turns.
Cainehill
August 4th, 2005, 05:03 PM
Excuse me? You had the gall to propose "peace" the same turn you had taken another province from me. Don't know wtf you were smoking, rather like assaulting someone, taking their wallet, and the very next moment saying, "Hey, peace, let's call it even-steven now."
No way in hell I was going to ally with someone who that very turn had stolen a province from me. If I got the province back, maybe : but when I took the province back, you launched another full scale invasion.
And it's ludicrous you two saying, OMG, Boron is going to win, right after at least one of you had been contacting Boron to get him to help you by attacking me. So now Marignon is going down, because the two of you started attacking me instead of Ermor, and all my lovely death mages are going to have to cast wither bones on your skeletal snakes instead of Ermor's hordes. Very very clever of y'all.
Aku
August 4th, 2005, 06:00 PM
This province you speak of was bordering my capital. No way in hell am I going to have peace with you and let you have a province bordering my capital. You then refused peace and that is the reason of this so called invasion.
So Caine go ahead and cast your wither bones on me instead of Boron. Even if that army dies I have another one 3 times as large waiting to go out.
Since you want Boron to win so badly I will grant you that as your death wish. I will make no attempt to stop Boron at all. In fact I will help him win the game after I raze your capital to the ground.
And about Maringon attacking you. Who knows why. Maybe he wanted to kill your miserable empire that refused to aid in the fight against Boron. You refused to aid against Boron so its either you are for him or against him and you obviously chose to be on the side of Boron since you want him to win so badly.
Hubris
August 4th, 2005, 06:41 PM
Ok, I'm going to part from my usual rule of silence about stuff like this. The reason I attacked you, Cainehill, is because, honestly, your empire was pathetic. I walked through a fort, took some money from you, and then proceded to kill 3 of Boron's temples to your south (that being the only reason you haven't domdied yet, btw). However, being a newbie myself, I forgot that Boron's land produce no supply. So after killing those two temples, most of that army had diseases. Furthermore, since Boron had back attacked my fort, I couldn't double move to it. The only adjacent province that had any supplies was your capital. And, since I didn't know whether your troops were patrolling or not, I used Fires from the sky to make it a little safer. Last thing I need is lots of chaff eating all my arrows...
I never really cared to attack you Caine, you just happened to be in the way, and you threatened a province that I very much needed. In fact, threatening that province delayed my attack on Boron 6 turns.
In case you're delusional, you're really being an *** about all of this. I think archaeo would be ready to back me up on this: the game was over when I stopped playing. There isn't even a learning experience left. All there is is you and your self-absorbed, masochistic bull.
If you really want to continue this game, I'll be happy to send you the files so you can play with yourself.

A province you hadn't taken in ... 55 turns, while you'd already had time and troops enough to attack me previously - you remember, when about 20 mages and your prophet died?
Since you want Boron to win so badly I will grant you that as your death wish. I will make no attempt to stop Boron at all. In fact I will help him win the game after I raze your capital to the ground.

Nice misrepresentation - you a politician? I didn't refuse to aid in the fight against Boron - I refused to ally with you while you'd been stealing my provinces. Marignon never contacted me to ask for aid - not for supply items, not for armies, nada.
And if it hadn't been for your incessant attacks, I would've been attacking Ermor. If it hadn't been for your attacks I wouldn't have had such a "miserable / pathetic empire" that Marignon decided to also attack.
And frankly, for having just 2-3 provinces, my nation is actually pretty buff, what with ... 28 nature gems a turn coming in, and the research and casters to make large upkeep free armies, and hordes of lamia queens.
No, the both of you decided that my nation would be no more than a speed bump, something that you could gobble up, and in failing to do so, the two of you blew your chance of actually doing something against Ermor.
Side note : Hubris, whether or not you blew through those two temples my dominion wasn't going away anytime too soon; where my pretender / prophet are my dominion was quite secure, thank you very much, and I would've dealt with those temples myself if I hadn't had to keep countering the two of you - just as I'm ready to take them out (which wouldn't have left _my_ armies disease ridden and dying) I'd keep getting another honking huge army on one of my citadels.

Caine maybe it would help if you used your fingers to count. I only attacked you with one army that no where near had 20 mages because most were in my capital researching. It was more like 5 mages with my prophet maybe 6.
This Caine is my 2nd army...that is two fingers.
Also if you havent noticed I was fighting Abysia for a while as well as your pathetic empire. The fight with Abysia actually occupied me for quite a while where I did no attacks on you. Havent you wondered why my 2nd attempt on you is coming so drastically late?
Also you made no attempt at trying negotiations with me. You flat out rejected peace with no ifs ands or buts. There was no chance to even negotiate with you since you are so thick headed thinking you are god of the world. My interpretation of your rejection was telling me to go F myself, I dont care if Boron wins.
Next time get out of your little box and think globally how the game should be handled instead of petty little issues in your I r uber attitude.
Cainehill
August 4th, 2005, 08:33 PM
'scuse me, but I think you were the person who should have attempted "negotiations" - I made it clear that I wasn't going to ally with you when you'd just taken provinces from me. Did you negotiate "You can have those provinces back" or anything? Errr... No.
And frankly, to some extent I didn't care if Boron wins - I wasn't going to win, in part due to you, but also because I took Carrion Wood scales and left the Carrion out of the Woods. So, being the vengeful type, my attitude was that Boron (at the time) hadn't given me injury or offense - you had. So guess who I'm interested in going after?
If I had even a slim chance of winning, I'd have played with more of a mind towards keeping Boron from winning. But as I didn't, revenge was the only goal I could reasonably pursue with some expectation of success.
Understand now?
If you want to try to beat Ermor instead of simply continuing to try and maul me, fine : get off my fortress without storming, and we can see whether or not 3 nations all with strong anti-Ermor capabilities can push him back.
Otherwise, well - doesn't really matter that much to me one way or the other, as I've been playing this out to do some experimentation (and because I didn't care to go AI just because I screwed up with my pretender design).

hmm, well, i'm not sure i was looking to joining in on an end game flamefest http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/laugh.gif
really, there's nothing I can realistically do to slow down boron's hordes - marignon is a goner. If you guys declare peace, go to status quo ante bellum, w/ I guess the original province by aku's capital for aku, i'll send caine the hammer of the forge lord and I'll send aku something, though I don't really have anything else http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif
but w/out a unified front, any pretense of repulsing boron is laughable - though I don't know how strong abysia is, I guess.
Hey, abysia - every 20 fire gems you send me will buy you a flames from the sky on boron's massive armies...

I am going to progress this way:
Raiding my foes down to 3-4 Provinces, slowly decimating the remaining strongholds with ghost riders/ashen angels/earth attacks.
Then aiming at dominionkill.
If someone makes a fault and moves one of his SC isolated or such then i teleport in my tartarians.
I see no need to risk them yet though because i am rather positive that my raid/dominionkill strategy will probably work anyways. This may take a while though, like 10-15 turns.

lol, there's only one thing I can say, and I'll try to put this gently - all of you sure f*cked up (other than Boron of course). Boron could go AI and still win. Hell, Boron could try to lose, and as long as he doesn't actively destroy his own temples, he'd still win. Everyone is looking at dominion kill soon enough.
