I thought that bodyguards are not allowed to fire ranged weapons? Has this changed somehow?

One of my vanheim dwarfen smith got assassinated and the two vans supposed to guard the dwarf were just idly standing by throwing the hapless spears at the marignion assassin! Luckily, the dwarf defended itself within the third round casting blad wind...

I believe that during assassinations troops actually do not use the bodyguard battle order, and revert to default orders (thus why they move forward to engage the assassin).

That's strange! Then what was again the reason for prohibiting bodyguards to fire missile weapons in normal battles? I thought bodyguards where prohibited from fireing ranged weapons in order to make assassinations more likely to succeed...

I think the reason is that prohibiting them from firing is the easiest way to make sure they don't leave the commander alone to fire closest. I think the possibility to fire under Hold (like in Hold&Attack) came only in patch of DomII, and guard commander comes from the very beginning of Dom:PPP.

Hmm, I think I recall some comments from the devs here in this forum about that issue more than a year ago, saying that bodyguards were not permitted to fire on purpose for balancing reasons, but I cannot find that thread anymore (I thought it started with discussing caelum's basic tactics...)....
