I have little experience, but I recall someone on this forum was using the Siege Engineer and cheap but defendable fortresses to just dig in and not yield. And even if one of their forts were to fall, the Siege Engineers would be just as good at conquering the castle back as they were in defending them.

BTW, I doubt the commander with fort def and siege boni of 25 is named Siege Engineer. I can't decide on how to write Physicist/Psychist/whatever.

Base game they are a bit underpowered, but you can still get some use out of them. Basically, you should rely on your pretender/mercs for expanding, and just use your small trickle of myrmidons as bodyguards for your mages or elite reserve. You will want a second fort quickly for mystic/priestess construction quickly, to take full advantage your philosophers. Some engineers with boots of flying can indeed be handy mid/late game. The bottom line, only a handful of your troops/commanders are worthwhile, but you can take advantage of the ones that are.

Now, if you are using the conceptual nations mod, in my biased opinion, there are a much wider number of strategies to pursue. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif
