You are already dead all. Nothing will stop this process.
Arholly
September 2nd, 2005, 02:42 PM
Yeah...Well, we'll see about that (whispering to his trump cards). The whole reason I took Marignon is to see how it stands up to Ermor, if it comes down to that.
It's nice my gem production is already higher than yours. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif
Incidentally, I am doing an AAR offline of this game. When the game is over, I'll put it out. It's kind of interesting writing it. Of course, I decided to start it today, 4 turns into the game, so the first two turns might be a little off but it will be accurate from this point out.

On Saturday evening I was the last one to play. I played two turns consecutively.
Yesterday, Sunday evening, I wasn't the last one. There was one nation (don't recall which) that didn't play.
for the record I'm on GMT+2 time zone.
Sure, if I staled for some reason, that my turn isn't in. I will only be able to play it this evening.

Yeah, it really helped in finding sites. It's why my gem production ramped up so quickly. It also helped me make items (like anti-undead crossbows my assassins were getting equipped with).
Of course, my allies got all my gems before I died, so that was ok.
I'm sure some of my allies were surprised to receive 25 gems each early on. And it was nice to have allies that quickly. I will still watch here for interesting happenings.

Don't know if it's waiting on the host or not, but I took my turn, and I was the last player for this turn, yet it still shows it's waiting for Marignon to take his turn, even though we got the message he was vanquished.

I gave orders for last turn this morning from my desktop.
I wanted to change one of my mages script so I've accessed the server from my laptop.
But when I've accessed it from my laptop I couldn't see any of the orders I gave this morning. So I did "quit w/o saving".
I wonder at two things.
First, if that's normal behavior or does that signify some error in giving the orders that might result maybe in a stale turn?
The second is whether or not accessing the server from one computer, giving orders then accessing from another computer resets the turn?- If that is the case then I need to replay the turn, Which sadly I can't do. At least not until tomorrow morning, when I'll have access to my desktop at home.
Any information or insight on the subject is most welcome http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

Yea, you really got my balls there. But I am still struggling (and that hurts http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/redface.gif ).

I have a technical question.
Since the turns are getting to large for one sitting I'd have liked to be able to be able to give orders and be able to save them so that I can continue later.
Is to possible to press the 'save and quit' instead of end turn and then be able to continue later? If I'm the last player to take the turn in a quick host wouldn't that trigger a hosting?
TIA

No, you should connect to the game instead of prssing on the button of your nation(before the messages), you press exit, goto "play an existing game" and find there your PowerOfTheEye.
When your ready just connect to the server again and enjoy the "your turn has been uploaded" or such message.

Sorry about the stale turns, we got hit pretty hard by the hurricane down in North Lauderdale. I'm running on a generator at the moment and I don't think I will be able to finish up the game. Switch me over to AI or get a sub. I messaged my password to griffin.

I'm sorry to hear about your problem with the hurricane.
Hope you'll get back to normal life soon.
I vote for switching Arco to AI. I'm not sure we can get a willing sub for Arco at it's current situation.
What do you say guys?

I saw that turn 71 has hosted.
Is it because Arco is already AI?
Edit,
I checked and Arco has not played turn 72. If it was AI it would have already played it.
So I guess the hosting wasn't expected.

Of course, I just made a BIG mistake. I had to go out of town for a last minute work trip Thursday, and that got extended to Friday. So I get back and check all my turns, thinking I submitted them all before I left.. and didn't submit a turn for this game. I think I made 3 or 4 moves Wed night before leaving, expecting to be back Thursday night to finish the rest of the turn. ARGH!! So I basically did nothing for a turn.
But hey, my treasury is really high this turn. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

We are at turn 79 now. Maybe it's just that I'm slow but for the last turn I've exceeded the two hours limit.
Well, win or lose my hopes are for a quick ending.

I know, I didn't know it could take this long for each turn. Now I can see why people say in the forums that they don't like big maps as much. I mean I'm having fun, but easily 2 hours, because I get distracted, or I think of different things and change all my orders, plus I kind of like the micromgmt sometimes (and other times hate it).
Also, with the holidays coming up these long turns may actually be helpful (if we don't pause over Thanksgiving or Christmas). Or if it ends quickly.
I'll try and finish my turn tonight (Tuesdays are bad for me though). http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/frown.gif

Hate to say guys....but this is a smallish map for the number of players we had.
WraithLord
November 20th, 2005, 01:27 PM
I'd say this smallish map is large enough for me :-)
How many provinces does it have anyway? I wonder how it compares in size to, say, Faerun map.
Shmonk
November 20th, 2005, 01:46 PM
True, for the number of players we started with it was a smallish map. It just keeps getting bigger and bigger the more we eliminate people. Now that we're down to 3, it seems bigger (ie more provinces per player).
And you're right, now I'm wondering if I would enjoy the end game on a Faerun map or not. Talk about taking a few hours per turn. Yikes!

@Tyrant, I was experimenting with different buffs for communion. one of them phoenix pyre. In shorter battles it might actually be useful. Certainly for good use of it I need to add reinvigoration spells (relief) and keep them slaves spaced up and far from non fire resistant troops/commanders.
@Shmonk,
I have saved all the game turns. When the game ends you can see this battle. It is an interesting battle that ends with great explosions of communion slaves that wipe out most of my army.

I've PMed Griffin. I'm hoping he can pause this game, since he started it, on Mosehansen. I will be out of town after tomorrow until next year (Jan 1), and I probably won't be able to finish this turn. The end turns are taking a long time for me to figure out what to do.

I haven't heard back from Griffin, and this is my last chance to check email. I hope he can pause the game before the time expires tomorrow. I'd rather pause it than stale.
If we unfortunately stale, I guess we should just call it a tie.
Izaqyos, I hope you can get a hold of Griffin, I tried looking for an email address, but couldn't find one. Maybe you'll get lucky and see him respond to this forum in time.
Oh well. Happy holiday!!

Alas, I don't have Griffin's email as well.
I will probably also partially stale as I haven't had time to do nearly half the things I wanted done.
Clearly it ain't fair that you'd stale all the holiday. We cab either call it a tie or maybe stale together.
I guess with the turns taking so long now it is possible that we call it a tie. Though I feel I have a good chance to win, I'm sure you feel the same :-)

@Shmonk, I take it that you have staled last turn. After playing this game for a few months and investing so much time into it I hate to see it go unresolved. Then again, this is an unusual situation where we can't get a hold of the game's host. For the sake of fairness I concede to calling it a tie.
WraithLord
December 24th, 2005, 02:44 PM
I have noticed that the timer is now set to more then 200 hours. which are about nine days. I'd say this will prevent any more stales. Taking into account that I wasn't able to give much orders the last turn would you consider continuing this game until the end?- I will understand if you don't but I'd be thrilled if we'll get the chance to bring this to game to a clear resolution.

I'm back.
I didn't give any orders last turn, so if we both staled, I'm fine with continuing on for a bit. I'm kind of conceding since I didn't submit any orders last turn while you did. But playing it out will be fun on the off chance I think I can turn it around and have a chance of winning.
Thanks again Griffin for changing the hosting schedule so we only had 1 stale.

I didn't stale last turn. I rushed my orders since I didn't have time so my turn wasn't complete either.
This is why I left it for you to decide. I would have decided the same thing had I been in your position. Simply for the fact that I don't care that much about the wining part. For me having fun is more important.
Anyway. Thanks for agreeing to continue. And best of luck!
BTW, in the turn you've staled you've killed my prophet and one of my demon lords. not bad for a stale http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif
Edit: @Griffin, thanks for prolonging the hosting. I think it'd be good if the hosting is switched back to something like five days , 120h.

Izaqyos, I hate to say it I have to concede. While I'd like to continue on for fun, I just don't have any time right now. The new year has started off with a "bang" and I have little time for this game, which takes a few hours a turn, if I really want to think about it and strategize.
It was fun though, and I got to see a lot of high level magic, so I know what to expect in the end game for other games. Great game, by the way. It was close.

January 9th, 2006, 08:31 AM
Shmonk, I want to thank you for a great game. For me the end game was a new experience and I have learned a lot about this phase. Yes, the game was close, though I had the (purely subjective) feeling I was getting the upper hand http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif
The truth is I'm a bit disappointed that you chose to concede, for I had some real fun in the last few rounds of our "Armageddon" war. Nonetheless I understand very well the burden of the last turns and why you have reached your decision.
I want to thank all the players of this game. This evening I will post a compressed file containing Pythium turns in this game for whomever might find them interesting.
Edit: I forgot the mention how impressed I am with the way you have played base Ulm. Truly remarkable. I would really like to learn more about your strategy, if you don't mind sharing it that is.

Sorry for the slow response. You played a great game also. While I'd like to think I had a chance, I don't think I did. I was not prepared to launch any major assaults, I was still getting groups organized, and learning new spells and the best benefits.
I think the last few turns I threw up every global I had access to, just to see what would happen. As evidenced by the last round, getting Mechanical Militia and Fata Morgana right before all of your attacks, that actually helped stop 1 or 2 attacks, and cut down on your forces in the other attacks.
Attached is my last turn file (pwd = newulm1). No big strategy on my part. I used an enchantress that saw little or no battles, she was strictly a rainbow / site searcher - 3F 3A 2W 3E 3S 3D 3N. And I found a few libraries close by, so got sages pretty quickly. Having the rainbow mage got me into the sea quicker, and gave me some good income early.
Getting the alliance with you when I did helped, I was ready to expand into 1 or 2 nations, and making the alliance with you got me to go take out Marignon instead (nicely softened up by Ermor), then try and take out Man (which was a tough fight). Like a dummy, I started attacking Man while still at war with Arco, so I was getting attacked on 2 fronts. But I prevailed.
I had Gift of Health up early, and even Forge of Ancients up right after that, and made LOTS of items, so that helped with expansion too. I think I had 3/4 of the unique items at one point, that I had access to (no blood stuff). I forged what I could, just to see how it worked and which I liked best.
Anyway, feel free to peruse my turn file. No big strategy, just expand slowly, search, and got lucky with sages and good gem income. My final gem income was = 27F,30A,25W,33E,23S,12D,19N.
I hope to get this far in another game. Until we meet again WraithLord (changed your name).

Thanks for the insight on your strat.
For whomever might find this interesting I will give my account of the game.
The turn files I can't give as of yet as I am using the same passwd. for one of my current games (stupid, I know).
Usually I like to take an SC for pythium to get them started early with expansion. I have successfully used virtue in the past. Previous MP games exposed a weakness in one of my favorite strats. with pythium which is using large communions. Those were countered by spells that kill low HP targets on all the battlefield like earthquake for example. Those spells kill most of the communicants on round one. To counter that I took a S9F2 Oracle. The S9 gives twist of fate. The F2 I think was a mistake and I might gave done better with E4. I took scales order 3, sloth 3, heat 0, luck -2, magic 3 with castle.
First few rounds were very bad for me because I couldn't expand well. At that phase I considered the game forfeit. Then the communion circles started doing their work and my expansion has accelerated.
I had a peach agreement with R'lyeh. At that time Arco was the greatest power in the game by a large margin. So I started a war with Arco. During this war I've used the oracle as to teleport on large armies and astral tempest them. I have had many harbingers and A. angels which I used to raid his provinces. They proved to be a failure because they are to frail and Arco has hunted them all down. By the time he did the war was starting to go our way. IIRC I also delivered the coup de grace to Ermor. Finishing Arco proved to be a difficult task for he had created large armies of summoned critters.
Next target was R'lyeh. They had one tough army in Jotunheim. The army was made of something like four abominations and many starspwan mages casting enslave mind. The battles against this army were always spectacular. I have brought large armies against it, sometimes with more the thirty communicants. But time after time they were defeated. At the end it was attrition that killed this army.
research wise I rushed to astral tempest then wish. I then put an arcane nexus global up, I think I've put something like 200 extra astral gems into it. Indeed it had lasted for a long time allowing to cast wish each and every turn until the end. Wishing got me a thriving blood eco and I've summoned all the blood royalty. I kept them from doing much battles because I wanted them to be a surprise for you. At the end game I had all the blood royalty. In addition to two vampire counts, fallen angels and three wraith lords, which I didn't even get a chance to use in battle http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif
All in all it was a fun game albeit somewhat time consuming. I want thank all the players and Griffin for hosting.
Oh and it is my first Dom-II MP victory, to be celebrated by bawdy dancing and feasting :-)
BTW,
Thought the new name more fitting than my university login...

Yes, thanks for hosting, Griffin, and good game by all others.
I don't remember my scales (I'm at work currently), but I have a hard time taking any negative scales, I usually take heat or cold 1, and that's it. Yet I see all players taking Order 3 Sloth 3 or some other combo of 3s. And I just have a hard time wanting to play those scales. I've tried them in SP, but maybe not the right combo. And I definitely did not have a bless strategy, that's my next goal, going for a strong bless strategy.
If you didn't guess/know already, I did dispel your Arcane Nexus. I think I dispeled one other of yours also. It just drove me nuts that when you got Arcane Nexus up, everything I was forging/casting was giving you gem income, and I hated that. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif So I saved up some astral, and got lucky and dispeled it the first time.
I can't wait to see your turn file, just to see your army. I've never fought pyth, so the communion guys was driving me nuts on trying to figure out how to best counter them. And your battles with R'lyeh were fun to watch, I don't believe I had any big battles like that (that I won, at least).
And I did the same thing on my first few MP games, using the same password. Doh!

These would be great troops but you arn't going to be able to afford very many... a dual bless eats up scales like crazy, and there arn't any cheap (like an immobile) with earth and nature. Would you use the earth mother?

i usually do use great mother, but sometimes i go with a n9 e6 master druid (or even great mother) because your scales can be more forgiving (the e9n9 bless is amazing to make sc's out of neifels units because they have build in regen, reinvig and berserk (which means you can use them in groups because if they go berserk then it dosnt matter if one dies)
