Well, I'm not sure why exactly but I was under the impression the astral magic increases MR.
Like earth magic adds to prot. air to precs. etc.

I was surprised to discover that it isn't so.
Is that intentional or is that a bug?
Wasn't this the way it worked in DOM-I?
If that's intentional, does it make sense?- Why is astral the only magic path to not confer a bonus?

It's bonus is twice the amount of magic leadership of other paths.

All magic paths increase magic resistance, but only for the spells of that path. Thus high Astral mage is more resistant to Astral spells, but not to Water spells requiring magic resistance check.

The magic-spesific boni are listed on page 27 of the manual. As quantum_mechani said, each point of Astral allows a mage to command 10 magical creatures instead of 5. Death and Blood also have leadership as the only bonus/boni, Death mages can lead 20 undead each but no magical units without other paths, and Blood mages are able to lead 5 magical and 5 undead units per level.

That's very interesting to know.
Is this information based on the manual?

Wait, what?! Where was this stated? You sure you're not just thinking of the astral blessing? This... changes much.

Yes, it is in manual. In fact, I thought that every level or two in magic increases magic resistance by a point or two. However, that is what the manual states. I don't remember the page or have my manual available, but it is described in the same section with spell penetration, before the list of commander commands IIRC.

I think Dom1 manual describes magic resistance as Izaqyos, and most of us others, thought it would work. It didn't always hold true for even Dom:PPP, though, so it might have been changed a long time ago...

MR has allways worked this way. Every full 2 in a path adds to resistance vs that path. Penetration has changed slightly since dom 1 though, so perhaps that is what you are thinking of.
