I managed to totally ruin my latest game by pressing the button for accelerated time (you know the ">>" button top left). I was travelling in a nebula with a crappy drive, so I wanted to get to my destination "a bit faster".

Then, once arrived at my destination, I met some Urluqai ships and started combat. But oops, I had forgotten to put the game speed to normal, so midway through battle a window popped up, telling me I was getting late... then a few seconds later the battle was aborted, and I was back to the starmap, but in a close-up zoom mode. The timer displayed "7300 days overdue" and nothing was working. I couldn't click anywhere, or access a game menu, or even press the "Escape" key. I had to shutdown the game using Windows Task Manager.

I really, really don't like the way the timer works. It should revert back to "normal speed" as soon as you reach a star.

I experienced this too. When the battle was over, I was 7000 days overdue. I've experienced the zoomed in problem and not being able to do anything too, and had to resort to task manager to shut down WW as well. There's been a few times when using the speedup button, the game hasn't automatically paused when I've reached a planet also, leading to several hundred/thousand wasted days before I react and hit the pause key.
