A concern comes to me: What happens if SE5 releases around the same time as Dom3? Will it overshadow it a reduce the population of acceptors that might otherwise have turned to Dom3 for thier strat needs?

That is a possibility but the dedicated strategy types will get both I think. Provided each one is deemed a quality addition to their respective series.
It might actually bring more attention to Dom3 as those previously unaware of Dominions glance about the forum and website.
I found SE from MOO2 and then found Dom2 from SE http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

Considering I found out about Dom through a Warlords forum, I think isodea has a good point.

Both the Dominions 2 forums and the Space Empires IV forums have tended to talk about each other a lot. The two games have so much in common so it wasnt surprising that many people who liked one tended to like the other.

Now to have people wonder how Dom3 and SE V will compare to each other just seems logical.

Another point... if one of these games ends up being unstable, heavily unbalanced or just not as good then the other game can be used as a rescue for giving good gaming. I seriously doubt this can happen to either game but it has happened with other sequels...
