Of all the lousy....

Turn 7 I get an earthquake destroying my temple in my home provence.

Not so bad right? Well, I didn't build a priest yet....

Can I recover from this?

I'm playing Vanilla Ulm (again).

make a prophet

Though you'd think a god could build him/herself a temple...

Maybe that's how to tell the winner early in the game - the one real god is the one that *can* build a temple http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

as shovah says, just emprophetize a commander, and he will then have holy magic and be able to build a temple.

Could be worse - imagine losing your labratory on turn 1 with a no-magic pretender, before recruiting a mage, and having to wait for a mage mercenary or random event giving you one.

This is why I always recruit a priest-type on turn 1 (one with magical abilities preferred to cover all bases).

Always forget about prophets getting priestly abilities. Thanks guys, I can go back to that game. I am getting my arse handed to me by a roaving Spider army in this new game. I can't catch these mofo's.

lol, try either a stealty (spie) tough (black knight) or versatile (smith), all depends on your playstyle

ps: iirc you like troops so go black lord

Another thing I something consider when making a prophet, is making a profit. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif

IE : with some of the really expensive non-sacred commanders, you can save a decent amount of gold by making it your prophet. This is especially important if you're going to have a bad gold income : for instance, Carrion Woods Pangaea. The Panic Apostate costs 320 gold, for an upkeep of 21. Making him the prophet, er, should halve that, but seems to make his upkeep 0, perhaps thinking he's undead or some such since he can reanimate undead. (Both base 2.16 and CB 5.2)

Sacred is half upkeep, blessed is none -- does this apply to Shroud of the Battle Saint?

hope so, sounds like a nice way around upkeep if you have the gems

This is the first I've heard of perma-blessed units having no upkeep at all. Is that really true? And if so I'm really anxious to learn if the Shroud trick will work!

Yes, it does work.

Hm this is interesting. You always learn something new http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif.

Iirc the shroud costs only 5 pearls?
Sounds like an interesting pan strat, take oracle and good scales and forge shrouds for your pans http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif. Also Pan is one of the nations which doesn't neccessarily need a SC god for earlygame imho.

I'm fairly sure the shroud does not reduce upkeep...

I agree, I don't think the shroud reduces upkeep - the commander is blessed but not sacred.

I thought that all prophets have upkeep of zero, but I havn't tested it out.

Yes, prophets have 0 upkeep, sacred units half, shroud does nothing upkeep wise.

Still leaves prophetizing a high-cost non-sacred commander rather appealing - even more so than when I thought it was half upkeep. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif

lets just say its very useful for neifel jarls

Does Shroud work for sacred units, then? Or is the "priceless" part of being prophet instead of being perma-blessed?

shovah
January 25th, 2006, 07:38 PM
i think it does

Apparently it's part of being the prophet - I always thought it was just half upkeep, like normal sacred, but... Sweet! I want to use it on the Niefel Ettin Panic Skratti, normally 1500 gold / 15 upkeep! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif

Yep I'm wrong. I accidentally tried to put it on a hero, I forgot some of the newer heroes have upkeep and others don't.
