It's been a long time since I originally installed D2. I have the original cd for the game but I can't find the jewel case or manual (I'm assuming it was stored on one of those). Is it possibly to find the original cd key on my old laptop and if so where within the software would I find it?

I also remember I had to enter the cd key when I joined this site? Any suggestions for me?

no cd-key was needed for joining this website.

cd-key is in the manual

I don't remember where its stored on a system.

cd key is in a file named "key" in the dominions folder. Just move it to your new dominions folder(by email or whatever) and youll be all set.

I am having the same problem. However, I cannot find a file name 'key' in the dominions folder.

Think everyone who bought the game spent time in the forums.

Yes I did. I only have one copy. However since I last played the game I have had My hard drive wiped. Would that make a difference?

lol. of course - if your hdd is wiped, that means exactly what it says - anything stored on that drive is now erased.

And, obviously, just installing Dom2 does not bring you the key file back: You'll have to type in your personal key from the manual, which then will be stored in the key file http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif

Wiping a HDD won't erase much. Unfortunately, it probably would be cheaper (and certainly easier) to buy a new copy of Doms II than to recover the contents of the drive.

You should try communicating with Shrapnel. If you can email them a scan of the box juxtaposed with your face, or some similarly silly proof of ownership, they should resend you a key. Legally, in the U.S., an owner who loses his key has the right to a replacement key, free of charge. Unfortunately, the burden of proof rests on the owner... but Shrapnel staff are nice people, so they may cut you some slack.

My version came without a box, and the key is printed on a sticker on the first inner page of the cover. So if I could present the manual, I would have the key at hand. Presenting the CD wouldn't suffice, as you can easily copy the whole Dom2 folder onto CD after installing - you don't need the install CD any more then, just the key(file).
