My max dominion is now 8.
If my Level 3 priest sacrifices at a temple does this mean he can increase to 8 or to 4(3 + 1 for temple)??

Eventually he can get it up to 8. He'll kill 3 slaves as a level 3, so it'll be a bigger effect than a level 2.

Just clarifying Ighalli's post, blood sacrifice is very, very different from ordinary preaching. Each blood slave sacrificed provides a single temple check meaning, for instance, that if your level 3 priest sacrifices three slaves per turn, he produces the equivalent of three regular(non-Mictlan) temples' worth of dominion.
Note that the term "temple check" might be a tad misleading, as Mictlan's temples don't actually produce any dominion of their own; Mictlan relies solely* on blood sacrifice to spread dominion. Mictlan's temples still increase your maximum possible dominion at the usual rate(+1 per five temples).
* Well, excepting your pretender and prophet

If each slave does a temple check can dominion increase by 2 or more in one turn?

I seem to remember that Mictlan could burn slaves to very quickly lower enemy dominion, so I'd quess yes.

There is a document about dominion spread around here. Look in the stickied post with a title like "dominions 2 links".
I think it does not necessarily agree with everything posted here.
