View Full Version : MP Game, CB Mod, Tripled Income

Graeme Dice
May 9th, 2006, 02:55 PM
I'm feeling an urge to start up another multiplayer game with non-standard conditions. I am personally of the opinion that one of the major reasons that national troops aren't used is that their gold cost is too high to justify their use compared to mages. Thus, to experiment with this, I'm hoping to set up a game where the income of each nation is closer to what was obtainable through tax and patrol micromanagement in Dom:PPP. Thus, I will be reducing the population required to produce gold to a third of its current value. This should make national troops and the more expensive castles required to produce them a much better investment.

We will be using the latest version of the Conceptual Balance mod, and there are no house rules. We will be playing on a map with no more than 15 provinces per player. Turns will be on a 48 hour quickhost.

The game conditions will be:
Map: 10-15 provinces per player.
Magic Sites: 50%
Independents: 6
Renaming on
Standard Research
No house rules
48 hr quickhost
The winning condition will be to control a number of victory points equal to the number of players. Each capital will count as a victory point. There will be a number of other victory points spread around the map. The amount of these victory points that are spread around the map will be one less than the total number of players.

I will be playing Mictlan.

The players are:
Graeme: Mictlan
Animal: Machaka
Cainehill: Jotunheim
Shovah: Pangaea
Reverend Zombie: Marignon
Tyrant: Vanheim
Folket: R'Yleh
Izzyz: Arco
Shmonk: Ulm
Oversway: C'Tis

Oh - thinking of Jotunheim myself, or perhaps Machaka.

Animal
May 24th, 2006, 11:51 AM
Are there still places left for the game?
If there are I'd like to play Machaka if Cainehill takes Jotun
but if he doesn't I'll go with Abysia.

Cainehill
May 24th, 2006, 02:08 PM
Animal, go ahead and take Machaka - I'll take Jotun or one of the other open ones.

Graeme : Are you handling the triple income via the map file, or will we be needing a mod that triples it? (And will resources likewise be tripled?)

Graeme Dice
May 24th, 2006, 02:25 PM
I'll post the mod for income tonight. I'm not planning to triple resources, unless people think that would also be a good idea.

Seems like a good idea to me, similar to rich world doubling both resources and gold. Otherwise nations that can crank out low-resource high value troops (Vanheim for instance) have an edge over those with resource intensive troops.

shovah
May 24th, 2006, 02:56 PM
i would triple resources too, could be fun (drools over posibility of producing 10 black knights/knights of the chalice/KNIGHTS TEMPLAR per turn)

Graeme Dice
May 24th, 2006, 04:44 PM
I'll triple the resources as well then.

good, otherwise no nation with high resource troops

Shmonk
May 24th, 2006, 05:21 PM
If you need 1 more player for whatever map you wanted to use, I'll join. Because 8 is a more rounded number of players to have, right? http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif

If you've got room, I'll choose a nation later this afternoon, after I get home from work, but I'm thinking Ulm, Arco or Abysia.

Shmonk
May 24th, 2006, 05:46 PM
hehehe I have yet to play Caelum, even in SP. I tested it once and thought it would be a different play style than I would like, so I stopped.

But if you really need someone to beat up easily, I may choose Caelum just for "fun". Because you never know, I could deliver a thorough trouncing... to my neighboring indy provinces. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/laugh.gif

Given his size and location (everywhere), it would make this game very chaotic if he suddenly went AI. I'd rather see Cainehill sub or, if nessicary, take over for him. Didn't happen, sorry. If I can't get it working tonight, I'll have Graeme set me to AI. I'd look for a sub, but I'm pretty much done for -- I should have better anticipated Van violating our NAP without warning.

We had no NAP. I offered one many turns ago and got no responce from you whatsoever. Taking this as a sign of hostile intent, i prepared to make war.

I am sorry about attacking while you are having 'puter troubles, but given the nasty aspect of your stinky swamp dominion i cannot loiter about catching diseases.

My reply must have gotten lost. Oh well. I'm probably quite dead by now. You may as well set me to AI if you havn't already. Sorry to everyone for the stales and slow turns.

Hello? Is there anybody out there? I've seen no new turn, and no explanation posted.

I'm getting a Twilight Zone kind of feeling about this game, and I was hoping someone could answer these questions:

Is there another forum where conversations about this game are happening? This weekend the game was again taken off of the timer, only this time without any request that I saw. Why?

Tyrant posted recently asking a similar question, but now his post has disappeared. Why?

Who is playing R'lyeh? Folket's request for contact info implies he is trying to take back over his country. Is this the reason for the delay? Please let Cainehill continue to play if Folket cannot connect so that we can make some progress.

If Oversway wants to go to AI, doesn't he have to make the change on his end, rather than having our kind host do it?

Has anyone heard from Machaka as to why his turn isn't in?

Finally, is anyone else as frustrated as I am about the appallingly slow pace of this game? This is my first net game ever, as opposed to a locally hosted one, and I find it excruciating to play so slowly. Is this the norm for net games? If it is, I will try to chill out and wait. But really, this is ridiculous!

Thanks in advance to anyone who can answer my questions.

I'm with you on this also. This is a very slow game, and we're only around turn 25 or something. In another game I'm in (RAND2) we are hosting twice a week, but that's because we're up to turn 73 or so and 2 turns a week is fine for that stage of the game. Yet this game is almost slower than that one now.

Oh well, I think once Dom 3 comes out and MP games are started for that there will be very few delays in those games.

Machaka put in his turn, Oversway wandered off, so Ryleh is the question now.

Because it's a long weekend, and people don't tend to play their turns over a long weekend. Games that I host play at a slow pace.

Folket told me on the 4th that he was taking R'lyeh back over, on the 5th he was asking the port/IP and I posted it. No clue what's going on with him now.

Graeme Dice

Yep. It didn't turn out quite like how I was hoping it would, but the game seems to be fairly interesting. I'm probably going to have to bow out at the end of this week due to a vacation unless somebody wants to take over Mictlan.

Thank-you to all who have replied to my post, and an especially big thanks to Graeme for hosting. No criticism of you about the pace was intended. I realize that players will lose interest if they miss turns due to real life, and accomodating requests for the clock to stop is prudent.
The admin burden is rather high, but I am still eager to continue playing with whomever wants to keep going.
Cainehill, are you willing to continue pinch-hitting, this time for Mictlan?
And, if Oversway is out, how can we get him set to AI? And, if he is not going to submit a turn, aren't we ready to go?

Graeme Dice
August 8th, 2006, 08:52 PM
I can set him to AI. I just can't set him back to a human if he comes back. I'll force host everything tonight and try to get the game back on schedule.

Cainehill

Graeme - is there is a hard date for you taking Mictlan back over? I'm a little wary about going into it open ended just now, but could fill in a turn or three, especially if you can say what you're doing, plans, etc, so I'm not coming in blind.

Edit : Oh - having just played / defended R'lyeh against you, I don't think it'd work out. Never mind.

Folket

Well, Cainehill perhaps we could negoiate a favorable peace. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif If I remember correctly someone said he was going to set C'tis to AI earlier in this thread, if that is so you should set him to AI at once.

Oversway

Yes, please set ctis to AI. I cannot connect from work due to firewall issues, and my home computer no longer has internet until I can get a working card. Apologies for going AI, it will probably give Van a big boost but I am unable to play.

I'm very sorry but I can't play this game any more. I will wait a couple of days before I turn my nation rouge.

I wish you good luck and sooner or later I will return in Dominions 3.

Sigh. Cainehill, can you ride to the rescue again? If you are still reading this forum, that is. Folket, can you post a request for a replacement? Since R'lyeh is yet the dominant player in the game, it would be great if we could get a human to take over. I will again halt my offensive against R'lyeh until we can get things sorted out, since I get no great thrill from whacking an unplayed position. Please do not go to AI at least until our host comes back.

If Cainehill doesn't want to do it, I can take over R'lyeh.

Yes, thank-you very much and welcome aboard. In case Folket didn't include a current events summary, here comes one. Mictlan is our host, and is out of town. You have been fighting Mictlan heavily, and me(Arco) a little bit. Marignon is also fighting Mictlan, and you may have some kind of agreement with him. Machaka and Ulm are going at it hammer and tongs; I don't believe either is fighting anyone else. Van is mopping up Ctis. Pan and Jotun are down, Ctis is almost so. Yes, my spies are everywhere.:) As stated above, I took no action against you this turn. Next turn, however...
Thanks again for riding to the rescue of our game.

Wheee!!!

Just like the Grand Finale in a fireworks show, the mad scramble for VP provinces is in full swing. There were 4 separate battles over one VP alone this turn.

Perhaps the vaunted Arco astrology corps did not forsee so many fish out of the frozen water? http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/evil.gif Things are looking up for Van. Perhaps the vaunted Arco astrology corps picked the wrong peace treaty?

Should be quite the fun scramble for the last 3 turns http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/biggrin.gif

So exactly how many more turns do we want to play this?

1?
2?

Call it a draw now, because we all hope to find dom3 in our mailbox today or tomorrow?

Since it takes two turns to breach and storm, one turn seems pointless. My copy of 3 shipped today, so i'm easy either way. It's really up to Graeme.

Nice job coming outta the bullpen Ron, and thanks again for taking over.

I say call it a draw now. After 2 nations storm my capital in the same turn no less. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif

But I'm fine either way, my delivery notice was today, so my copy should be arriving tomorrow (cross my fingers).

It was necessary to destroy your capital in order to save it from being destroyed by Arcoscephale. So, really, just doing you a favor old chap.

Well, that's our story and we're sticking to it. Until we think of a better one.

Thanks for the game, everyone.

It was an interesting experience. The triple income made it possible for me to switch R'lyeh's focus from the previous owner's lobo swarms to huge masses of ilithids and (most importantly) starspawns. There were very few mage starspawns when I took over, but I was able to recruit them in huge numbers. The ones with a death random were the most important - nether darts from an S4 caster are just nasty, and being able to teleport 10-20 nether bolters onto whatever army Arco was trying to throw at me was more than he could handle.

Thanks to Graeme for hosting.

Unless someone has any objection, I'll message Graeme and let him know he can take the game down.

Congratulations RonD, on a well-earned victory. I fumbled in the end zone due to sequence of play confusion, as you no doubt noticed. A typical noob error I'm afraid. This was my first net game and only my fifth multiplayer game. All in all, very enlightening. Thanks again for stepping in, and thanks to Graeme for hosting. On to Dom III!

Thanks for the game everyone. Kinda a bummer for me 'cause all my opponents deserted, but fun playing with giant armies of endgame Vanhiem might.

Thank you for hosting Graeme, and bonus points for hosting for so long after you left without complaint!

Grats to Ron, excellent work coming in as a sub and pulling off the win!
