Is there anything in Dominions 3 that will surprise veteran Dominions players?

Definitely! But it won't be a surprise if we tell you.

Too bad he didnt have the new numbers. It looks like the units and spells might be Dom2 info which Im guessing (fervently hoping) is much changed for Dom3?

What are the numbers for Dom2? The numbers in the press release are the same as listed under features for Dom3. It was my understanding that Dom3 would have many more creatures, magic items and spells.

Saber Cherry
May 18th, 2006, 03:26 PM
Those numbers seem like they could be accurate, except I think nations has been quoted as closer to 60 than 50. Dominions II had more like 1000 to 1100 troop types, so 1500 seems reasonable. But it's a monotonic function, so by release it could be 1600, and by patch 2 it could be... one hundred beellion!!

Kristoffer O
May 19th, 2006, 12:05 PM
Current number is 1649 units.

1649 eh? Now that's a good omen. Yay to the Kingslayer!

So, that's only about five hundred new ones to document, except all the old ones have to be done too. I'll be slaving night and day all summer to get a Dom3 Unit DB out...

I dont get it. If they are posting an interview on a site, it is public information. If you only link the interview, it cant be "illegal". Copying out the interview, and posting it like your own interview might be illegal...but a link?! Anyways, maybe you are right, it is still better to ask them...

Gandalf Parker

short answer
Some would prefer that you send people to their site, not to the article. It might not be required to ask but its always nice to at least make an effort to ask.

longer answer
Its another good idea that got abused on the net. People used to be able to freely link to any graphic or article or animation or download file. But some people got slick at creating really fancy sites that used generated no bandwidth charges (I even used to suggest it). But some small sites got totally shut down by the hits on one graphic or file, and none of the traffic went thru their site to see their ads and stuff. Now many sites watch for things like that and block it.

Our wonderful name was not of my choosing. It came from a drunken IRC conversation between some of my *ahem* esteemed colleagues who thought it was funny to combine 'tactical' and 'testicular cancer'. I'm not very fond of it, but, as Morkilus pointed out, it's better than "gamerd00dz.org" or "StrategyPlace" or something else generic.

Plus, it lets us use slogans like "We'll Have Your Balls!"

Heh, that's the best part of the name. Mock it all you want, but you'll certainly remember it. I guess it would've been more accurate to call the site Strategicaluar Cancer, but that doesn't sound as cool (Strategical Cancer may have worked, but it doesn't the charm of Tacticular Cancer ahehe). Besides, if you're so ASHAMED of the name, baby arm, you could just call it Tcancer or woteva.

Anyways, yeah, you can link to our stuff all you want as long as you put a humongous link on the page that says "WE GOTS THE ARTICLE FROM HERE: HTTP://WWW.TACTICULARCANCER.COM" (HTTP://WWW.TACTICULARCANCER.COM)

Also, it seems that the mechanic of choosing and customizing your own fortress has been reomoved, at least from this version. Hopefully it'll be back in when the game hits retail.

Well, now we wont be able to choose, that what kind of forts we gonna build in the game. The AI cannot make any bad choices regarding fortress type, but it will be forced to build the one and only possible fort for that province, just like the human players. -> Balance.
As for multiplayer, we wont see watchtower spam, it was possible in Dominions 2. Also, provinces gonna be even more valuable strategecially, since the province terrain will determine what kind of fort will be built. -> This means, that some provinces will be able to build the best fortresses available in the game, while the other provinces wont have the ">>best fortress for sale<<" signpost. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif

Overall, I think that the devs choose this way in Dominions 3, because of the balance, and I must say that I like it.

I think it's definitely incumbent on us as Dominions fans to do what we can to spread the word ourselves. There are lots of little things one can do -- for Dominions II, I submitted reviews to two of my favorite sites (rpg.net and gamefaqs.com - both of which are still hosting them), blogged about the game in my livejournal, sent out a few e-mails to friends, and mentioned the game in the various web forums and communities I haunt where I thought it was appropriate to suggest to other potential players. I'd even suggest e-mailing various outlets and asking them to review Dominions 3 -- odds are I'll ask the Penny Arcade guys to take a look at it as it's definitely Tycho's sort of bag and that site has crazy influence among a certain subset of gamers.

In any case, I'm sure Shrapnel's doing what they can to get it out there and, to be honest, most games of Dominions' size are lucky to get a review at release, to say nothing of a preview. I thought it was amazing that Gamespot offered a review of Dominions II -- and it was that review which sent me over here a few years ago in the first place. So, here's to doing our part in the meantime.

I must apologize - I'm behind in posting updates in the preview thread. I need to add to the list the most recent issues of Cyberstrategie, PC4War, and PC Pelaaja. These are all print magazines, the first two French, the third Finnish.

The preview code did not include the manual (as it was not complete at the time), so only reviewers who were already familiar with the series were able to effectively examine the beta of Dom 3.

We have a list of game sites and magazines anxious to get their hands on the final code with the manual, so you should see reviews aplenty http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/biggrin.gif And thank you to all who are talking up the game on other forums. That's a big part of getting the word out. Many gamers don't trust reviews and like to hear feedback from fellow gamers.

Unfortunately it has nothing on Dominions - 2 or 3!
