View Full Version : Any changes in crossbreeding?

I wasnt really using this spell in Dominions 2. tbh, but there was a topic about it a few weeks ago, so I decided to try it. I think that its a fun "spell", but not powerful enough. I think that there should be more creature types what you can get from crossbreeding. Also the spell is not powerful enough in Doms 2. at least imho.
Any changes gonna happen to this spell in Dominions 3.? Kris or Johan? http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/cool.gif

Maybe we will see new freaky creations.

Or then J and K have been completely assimilated by the one-eyed cavern creatures.

Crossbreading is such a fun spell (though perhaps underpowered), I hope it reappears in DOM3.

Well the creatures from the crossbreeding spell had weaknesses other blood units did not carry. These weaknesses included a small upkeep cost and most of them needing food supplies. Currently the best creatures from this spell are not that great without casting other spells... also they have low magic resistance.

My suggestion for improving the spell... allow a small random chance for a type of powerful creature to appear. Illwinter can create three different types of these powerful creatures to make it more interesting. Thus if someone wishes to gamble on this spell it might be worthwhile... otherwise as mentioned earlier 'crossbreeding' is just a fun spell.

Doesn't this spell already do that? What it needs is either a much higher chance to get better creatures (around half of them sounds good), or to make some improvements to the fodder ones. Or both.

More variety is always nice, of course.

Not really... one of the best is the ettin... and even he is nothing powerful without other spells being casted.

Improving existing fodder or increasing the chance will cause the spell to be near equal of the other blood spells. Thus gamers would eventually discover which blood summon is the best deal and usually choose it.
If this spell had several new and much more powerful rare creatures in the mix then it would introduce a new type of summoning spell... a gamble summoning spell.

Oooh, that would be *very* nice. It wouldn't have to be even much diffrent...it could result in those lil' freaks with commander skills, or maybe you would get a "Gifted Freak" with 1 random magic, oreven a thug-suitable commander. http://www.cncreneclips.com/forum/style_emoticons/cncre/shifty.gif

EDIT: I don't think it would be overwhelmingly hard to do either...

I found the spell semi useful for armies where the other guy had me all matched up. Exactly the right units to counter my units. Tossing in a large batch of the random attacks/defenses that come up on crossbreeding tended to mop up such a well thought-out army.

Now I definetly wouldnt mind abit more of that. Some creative new units with surprising new abilities. If they are too powerful then just have them show up less often. But I definetly found it useful at times to get everything from fodder to amphib to drainer in a nice mess that I could assign around. Some small flyers wouldnt hurt. And maybe a couple of sneaks.

Fliers, sneakers and maybe bit more amphibs would be nice too.

Maybe a couple more robust creatures too?

Foul Spawn should get an extra tentacle for each luck scale.

I'd like to see few of them being commanders, myself. A small chance for any given crossbred creature being commander could give some interesting options. If Cave Drakes with Flying Carpets can be the bast of a thug-team...

Random thought:

An earth/blood variant of crossbreeding (crossforging?) would be nifty. Instead of naturish powers like poison or regeneration, you get a load of creatures with weapons instead of hands and armour grafts. Rarer powers could include a siege bonus, flame attacks, pillaging and various projectiles.

Yeah, I always wanted to see some huge horrific creature from crossbreeding. Give it a 5% chance to appear maybe? Also there should be 1 better unit then ettin as a "normal" crossbreeding unit, maybe with a 10-15% chance to appear with the highest luck scale?

Why not just add more powerful but rare creatures, and make all the rare creatures a little more common? It'd be boring to get one unit, even a good one, too often.

I'd like to see more Blood/Earth spells, and Sandman's idea sounds interesting. It could probably be made as a mod that replaces all Crossbred monsters with half-machines, even in DomII, but a new spell would be nice.

A fine Japanese tradition, the octopus is a symbol of virility and fertility...

I'd love to see something like the Abominations from Warcraft III, maybe even a creature infected with poisonous spores that explodes when you kill it. Or you could make the majority of the crossbreeds have poisoned blood that inflicts a weak poison on their killers/people around them when they get injured/die. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

Now that Kris is visiting the forum, I had to revive this thread. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/biggrin.gif
I really think that this spell shoulg get some upgrade in a patch. [We should be able to create more types of monsters with Cross Breeding, also some rare and powerful monstrocities should be added.] http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/smile.gif

I conjure you, by that which you profess,
Howe'er you come to know it, answer me:
Though you untie the winds and let them fight
Against the churches; though the yesty waves
Confound and swallow navigation up;
Though bladed corn be lodged and trees blown down;
Though castles topple on their warders' heads;
Though palaces and pyramids do slope
Their heads to their foundations; though the treasure
Of nature's germens tumble all together,
Even till destruction sicken; answer me
To what I ask you.

I invoke the lords Illwinter!
