Dear developers,

We're working on an open source program for Windows. My boss asked me to figure out how to change the program's icon into a custom icon for distribution. Unfortunately, most of the info I've looked at either deal with users changing icons or link to custom icon programs we can't spend money on. As veteran shareware developers, could you please tell me how you give your programs custom icons?

IIRC the program we used to make the icon for Weird Worlds was IcoEdit by SnideSoft. It's freeware, and there are various other icon editors that are free or cheap (e.g. Microangelo). As for how to include the icon in your exe, it depends on the compiler/ide you use.

I personally like IcoFX - you can get it here: http://icofx.xhost.ro/
It even supports the new Vista icon sizes and bitdepths! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/laugh.gif
Why in the world Windows Paint doesn't let you save icon files I don't know http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/rolleyes.gif
