Hi everybody,
This game is jinxed. That is why the name of the game has been changed accordingly. The setting still are:
We are now using 3.06 ...
Hosting by server, 24h turns at the start, slower later.
Random map with 120 land and 30 sea provinces.
Middle Age.
Victory by VPs (10 out of 25)
Indies 3

Hall of Fame 15

I am really sorry for all troubles. Somehow it seems to be more difficult to get a game going nowadays. Still, I will not loose my faith in the good of mankind, so I am restarting once more. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/tongue.gif http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

Actually it shouldn't matter since the random map generator creates 8-10 provinces per player so land and water should have an equal amount of provinces to conquer.

Server is up and running, check above for IP and port.
The map is 30 sea and 120 land provinces, making it 10/player. The random map generator was used, but I have added a couple of extra connections to connect all oceans and to add some land bridges. In general, there is no big secret about his map. The image of the map can be viewed at http://www.fams.de/fd-gb.jpg
The server was started with the following settings:
./dom3 --tcpserver --port 8192 --hours 24 --quickhost --textonly --noclientstart \
--mapfile Dollhouse.map \
--hofsize 15 \
--totalvp 30 \

Frechdachs_Gangbang
I assume that 12 out of 30 VPs is tough enough with that many players that the game should keep us busy for some time. Indies are weak as I do not want too many players to curse about loosing pretenders to them. Expansion should be hindered by other players soon enough.
The master password will only be used in absolut emergencies. I am planning to disable quickhost once the game is going. Also, with that number of players it will be difficult to respect all absenses. We will see how it works out, but do not be too much afraid of stale turns http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif
Also, the stat-file will be available globally (if nobody minds).

Rough week at work - (1.5 jobs, the main one being night shift). I have the rough outline of my pretender, but really need a little more testing / refinement. Another 24 hours okay? ( Wasn't a start time listed originally, so I was looking at pretenders for the 3rd game I'm getting into at first, 'cause that one had a start time. )
In a pinch, I'll try to check before going to work in the morning, upload something - but would really be happy for another 24 hours.

Everybody except Cainehill has uploaded his/her/its pretender. As I think the weekend is not a good place to start the game anyway (and as I don't have Internet at home as I forgot to pay the bill and as I have to go to work for every turn, to use the computer there) I will start the game on Monday 12:00 MET. That will include Cainehill - if he manages to upload until then - or not.
Sorry for these delays.

Ok, two nations are still missing: tibbs, who has the problem that he/she/it did forget the passwort for his/her/its uploaded pretender and Stossel who has not done anything at all.
I have switched off automatic hosting. I hope that I can fix the situation with tibbs (is there a way to change a password? Otherwise, if we all trust tibbs, he might go ahead with the master password). I will also PM Stossel to see what the situation is with him.
Bluebird
October 17th, 2006, 11:29 AM
So, tibbs won't remember his PW and Stossel is not answering. So, I assume that we will just restart, probably without Stossel and with a new pretender from tibbs. Please upload again. Was first turn anyway, so not harm done.
Sorry for the noise and the delays, but it is kind of hard to juggle so many players. _IF_ anybody of you expects problems participating this game, please do not join but tell me instead.
The game will restart Wednesday evening or Thursday.
JaydedOne
October 17th, 2006, 01:35 PM
Bluebird,
One decent way to prevent further issues of the sort we had with Tibbs is to require any player using a password on their pretender to e-mail it to you before uploading their pretender. That way you, as the game's host, have a failsafe that doesn't require the master password.
Just a thought.

I usually use the same PW for all pretenders. Not sure what happened.
Anyway I have uploaded my pretender again. Looks like everyone else has uploaded except Jotunheim.

Just so you know, no frustration whatsoever where you're concerned. You're doing a great job as host and moving quickly on the problems that arise. I think these are all wrinkles to be expected as many people get their feet wet on MP for the first time (or for the first time in a long while.)

Thanks for the hint, but using the server for uploading seems to be much more convenient. I will make a backup of the upload directory, start the game and then test all pretenders for passwords. Also, I will post the MD5 hashes of the pretenders, so that everybody can check for the correct body. Seems more convenient to me.

Lol - guess that's one drawback to using the random maps for MP games. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif
Although actually, the drawback has to do with the horrible mechanism Dominions has always had for placing starting positions - doesn't pay much if any attention to how close nations start, even if half the map is empty, and doesn't pay attention to # of neighboring provinces and whatnot.

Bloody hades. I'll see how it looks after the first turn, but I suspect I'm going to quit playing games with random maps -- too many unplayable positions, too many restarts, and I'm now looking at a probably unplayable position.
Illwinter? It's be _real_ nice if you made sure no one's starting positions too many, or too few, neighbors, given how important the capitol is now. One hint : If a province has too many neighbors and is chosen for a start/capitol, either look again, or reduce the number of neighbors.
And if someone has too few viable neighbors (something like water province start, 2 or 3 water province, land start, 3 or 4 minimum) either throw out the starting positions, or add a connection to somewhere.

No, Atlantis just staled once. I had times Atlantis to have 48 hours of time (by restarting the server - which I had to do anyway), but obviously it looked like this was not sufficient. Well - all will be fine, I hope, though "Ag" is still missing and there are only 3h left. I will just continue with 24h, one or two stale turns should not kill anybody and I want to keep this game going.
JaydedOne
October 30th, 2006, 01:25 PM
Is it on 24h quickhost? Because, given that most of y'all are on European schedules and I'm working days, that makes it -very- difficult to time when I need to be available to hand in a turn.
*sigh* I should have paid closer attention when signing up. 48h generally gives me plenty of time to adjust and handle turns. 24h, given my schedule, is a bear.

Strangely enough dominions hangs when trying to play the turn?- Does that happen to anyone else?
My py_eye script reports all turns not played with the exception of R'lyeh, so maybe there's an issue with the server.

Sorry - hosting worked ok, do not know what happened, but I was able to connect w/o a problem.
Who is still playing? It has been very quiet.
Also, next time there is a problem with the server, please PM me so I get a mail and can response faster, thank you.

I'm sorry but I think if the game won't continue soon it's as good as dead http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/frown.gif

Yes, I will switch on the timer again, but it is a pity that we have Ul- Aby- Atl- :-(
What should I do? Switch them AI?

Maybe we can try and contact them and see if they wish to continue, if not we can post a request for subs, they both have good positions so it might be doable. In that case we can wait for subs and in the worst case if can't find ones turn them to AI. does that make sense to you?

I am not really sure, I think the whole game is somehow cursed. I rather want to finish this game fast and start a new one, with perhaps somewhat steadier players: the main problems of this game was that there were stall players from the start, without notifying me.

I understand, so by all means please go ahead and switch the stallers to AI so that we can get a closure on this one.

Ok, Ul- Aby- are missing, I will send a message to the players, if I do not get an answer until the end of next turn, or a negative one, I will switch them to AI at the end of next turn.

Very strange that they're both missing as they have great positions in the game. IIRC Ulm had the best position not that while ago. Anyway, I think it's a good call, thank you Bluebird for keeping the game going.

Ulm and Atlantis are now computer controlled ... and they do have _lots_ of money! ;-)

Greetings from Pan!
I'm going to be away from my PC for a couple of weeks, so unless you guys want to wait until I get back (which I doubt), I'm going to set myself AI. Let me know.
If I go the AI route, thanks for the game!

If there are any troubles with the server, please PM me. I just upgraded the machine to the latest Debian release ...

The server works great for me. Though Atlantis and Ulm AI may be too vicious for my taste http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif

Pan here again. Just a reminder that if you want to set me to AI, please do. I'll check the board when I return to see how things are going.

ok, we already have so many AI players with good positions that one more will not hurt ;-) We will have a look how it develops ...

"And thus came the angels from above with their flaming swords and blazing eyes to lead the righteous armies of Pythia. And the wicked shall tremble and the unbeliever shall cover for the omniscient wrath of Magnific sees unto the depth of souls. And all shall rejoice at the acendence of the true god, the angelic arbiter, the light bringer, Magnific."
From the prophecies of Pythia.
This has been a fun game, I'd like to thank all the players and of course our host Bluebird.

Congratulations WraithLord. And thanks to everybody who stayed with us though the game. I probably was the most unpreditable hosting that I ever did, but I still enjoyed my part of it.
I will take down the server tomorrow and start thinking about a new game to host. You will see annoucements coming up soon.
