View Full Version : MP Game, Middle age

Graeme Dice
October 16th, 2006, 03:00 PM
Now that my first game is underway, I'm setting up a game in the middle age. Pick your nation, and we'll be using the default settings except where noted.

Random Map: 15 provinces per player.
Renaming on
No house rules
48 hr quickhost
The winning condition will be to control a number of victory points equal to the number of players. Each capital will count as a victory point. There will be a number of other victory points spread around the map. The amount of these victory points that are spread around the map will be one less than the total number of players.

The current players are:
Graeme: Agartha
Death: Machaka
Jeffr: Pangaea
Hadrian_II: Pythium
Theonlystd: R'lyeh
Tibbs: Shinuyama
Arameyan: C'Tis
Foodstamp: Oceania
RamsHead: Atlantis
Xox: Vanheim
Tyrant: Marignon
Catquiet: Jotunheim
Ezco: Ulm
Jaydedone: Man
Faj: Abysia

IP Addr: 68.148.8.147

I suppose that I should let everyone know that as a general policy for my games, I don't like to run too many turns on weekends because many players have other committments. If there's a Canadian long weekend coming up, then expect the turn to possibly not process until late Monday night. I'll try and let everyone know ahead of time in this thread. If there's an American long weekend that doesn't have a corresponding one in Canada (Like thanksgiving), then let me know here or in a PM, and I'll also postpone the turn processing.

What kind of wussified name is Takashi-no Jo? You think people will tremble at the sound of that? They won't. My pretender though will make the people vomit in fear and tear their eyes out. It is a name so immensely terrifying that even I hesitate to speak it.

Yes they will. In one language, "Takashi-no Jo" translates roughly to "Lady who could Sumo wrestle, wearing a string bikini". People will tremble at the sound, and the smell, and definately the sight. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif

I like your translation better than mine. It should translate into "Takashi's Castle" which is the original name of the show they used for Most Extreme Elimination Challenge if anyone has seen that. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif

You're joking right. First thing: a magic heart would not affect him because he has the lifeless attribute, you know because he's an inanimate. Second thing: why would you give him a bow? He is gonna hit one of his own guys.

FAJ
October 23rd, 2006, 07:29 PM
can you make it any faster for the first couple turns?

Graeme Dice
October 23rd, 2006, 07:42 PM
I'm not planning to make it any faster, as it's much easier to get into a rhythm when the turns come at predictable intervals.

RamsHead
October 24th, 2006, 12:42 AM
Somebody has to tell me what the Snake Charmer is like. I haven't seen him in SP yet, and as I am Atlantis, I can't even try to recruit him.

FAJ
October 24th, 2006, 05:07 PM
Um, does misfortune just increase the likelyhood of bad event or does it also influence the severity of the events? In 2 turns, random events have increased capitals unrest significantly and cut its population by over a fifth. Is this just bad luck? It never happened in SP.

JaydedOne
October 24th, 2006, 05:32 PM
Heh. I don't believe it necessarily influences the severity of the events directly -- however, there are certain HORRIBLE events that are restricted to the lower levels of Misfortune, so that you can only get them with a 2 or 3 rating.

FAJ
October 24th, 2006, 07:09 PM
How big a disadvantage is it to essentially start with only 20000 people as opposed to 30000?

Graeme Dice
October 24th, 2006, 08:06 PM
Your starting income is 2/3rds of what it would be with 30000. It can be dealt with as long as you expand as fast as you can.

FAJ
October 24th, 2006, 09:07 PM
Reasources are not affected by pop. are they? Abysia has low gold and high reasource cost, so I am more worried about indirect ramifications (especially with a 0 growth/death scale).

DrPraetorious
October 26th, 2006, 06:28 PM
I do wish the game had an option to disable random events for the first six months.

Folket
October 27th, 2006, 05:01 AM
That would throw off the balance even more making missfortune a complete nobrainer. At least now there is a risk involved with having missfortune.

DrPraetorious
October 27th, 2006, 11:37 AM
Okay - an option for turning off *bad* random events for spring and summer of year 1. Merely missing out on good random events would be problematic - and even order-3 misfortune-0 players such as myself experience a certain number of earthquakes and lab fires and such on turn 1.

And given how deleterious some of the bad random events can be, even in the late game (and given how useful many of the good random events are), I dispute that misfortune would ever be a no-brainer.

JaydedOne
October 27th, 2006, 11:43 AM
I've gotten used to the horrid Misfortune element at game startup. After all, is it really that much worse than starting off two provinces away from Ermor as sometimes happens? You can generally find ways around the nasty Misfortune events, even losing your lab or temple turn 1 (which, admittedly, sucks, but if you're playing Misfortune 2 or 3, you should probably be buying a mage or a priest or, better, both on Turn 1 just in case.)

*shrug* I do think that turning it off would tend to give too great a swing to the already heavily-chosen Misfortune scale. But then, we allow so many other scales to be tampered with by game settings at the game startup phase that I think you could probably add some sort of toggle or slider for random events as well.

DrPraetorious
October 27th, 2006, 04:38 PM
You can set random events to rare, of course: but this greatly penalizes people with the turmoil/fortune combo (which is actually quite nice if rare events are common.)

Also, personally, I use a perl-script to ensure that start-sites are reasonably spread out on my random maps.

Obviously the game is going to be far from scrupulously fair - but I find it very irritating when someone is essentially swatted on the first turn, no matter what picks they took.

tibbs

I PM'd the game hoster this morning but I haven't heard back so I just wanted to let everyone know that I'll be out of town over the weekend and I won't be able to post a turn for around 48hrs from now.

My problem is that I don't have any good way to determine who has staled on a given turn, as I very rarely actually see the turn processing start.

FAJ
November 15th, 2006, 01:59 PM
Its been nearly two weeks since he has posted anywhere on the forums. He has (Along with R'lyeh before he was switched) been the last one left before the host for the last couple turns.

Generally if your the last before the host, you are the first after the host. he just has been stale for many days. My guess is vacation, or loss of computer access, or something that would keep him away from computer/internet for an extended period.

Either way, he is making this game drag something serious.

Hmm, when did Ermor go AI? I didn't know they were on the ropes.

My position is far weaker than it appears on cursory examination. I may have over-reacted in going computer controlled - but it's too late now.

Damn. Didn't even notice. No fun conquering AI lands. And yes I was just about to make a knock out. Well and that lucky arrow volley which took 4-5 thaumaturgs got to hurt.

The only nation to not play is Argatha. I don't think they are playing anymore. I think they only have a few territories left. Maybe they can be set to AI.

I'm really starting to get fed up with Shaw, since they can't seem to manage to keep their connection up for more than 24 hours at a time these days. I'll reboot the router once again tonight when I get home.

Thanks again Graeme Dice for hosting this game. It seems to be frustrating you.

The reason that nobody has been able to connect for the last while is that when my Internet connection died for the better part of the day on the 24th, I got a different dynamic IP assigned to me. I just figured it out while at work, so I'll fix it as soon as possible. I'd like to get these games rolling again.

Unfortunately, somebody didn't read my server status thread and has already submitted their turn with a version 3.06 client. This is causing the server to crash repeatedly, which it will continue to do so until the patch can be applied, which is not for another 24 hours.

I think Shinuyama has not made his turn for quite some time, but I also don't understand why his lands have not been taken.
We could step up the pace if he would be kicked. Otherwise I really like the 48 hour limit and sometimes hope it would be even longer. Thank you very much for hosting again Graeme and I hope I will get to play another MP on your server when this one comes closer to the end. If that one underwater province is all that is left of Shinuyama I cannot understand why Atlantis won't take. Maybe he has a peace treaty with it http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/tongue.gif. Well hopefully his dominion comes to end soon.

Shinuyama is dead except for one sea provence that i cannot get to. If someone with amphibious capacity takes that out he will be gone.

Hi all

I'm out for the next week, I'm going to Cuba http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

I obviously wont be able to play. As I'm the weakest of the map I choosed to become computer controlled instead of asking you to wait for me. To respect my treaty with Marigon I'll send all my ressources (gold, gems) to him. But I dont think my small AI controlled army (currently all holding siege on a Abysian castle) will offer much resistance to anyone.

I enjoyed the map, it was fun to play with you all. My many early strategic mistakes, powerful neighbors and the prepatch Miasma income bug prevented me from becoming a strong nation long ago, but it was fun anyway. I got the chance to try a giant toad + sirrush Nature blessed army http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif Its quite effective, exepted when the sirrush block the castle entrance, forcing the trampling toads to wait behind, under the Abysian rain of fire and killing all my bodyguards and commanders with poison clouds...

Have fun! Thank you Graeme for hosting these games.

I am sorry guys, but I have RL things to deal with right now. I cannot take my turns for awhile, so I will set myself AI. It shouldn't mess things up too much, because I don't believe I am in an influential position. Good luck to the rest of the players.

Game over. Great game everyone. I'm glad I made it to the end on my first long term MP game.
Hooray for Tyrant. It was funny how quickly it turned for my Ulm. First I was overly confident sieging his capital and teleporting my golems at his provinces and few turns later my army and expensive golems destroyed I was in despair and never recovered.
Hip hip hurray for Tyrant yet again and thanks to Graeme for hosting. Smith Council of the Iron Empire and their deformed god will be forever forgotten in books of history.

You fought quite well Ezco, of my many opponents only Shinuyama did better, and I was fighting them left-handed while my main forces were engaged against Pythium.

Abyssia seems to have lost heart when C'tis betrayed him and you were overmatched by that point in the game, i don't really think there was much else you could have done. Letting my capitol be besieged is a tactic i use so often it should be named after me- i did it twice this game- and it's only failed once.

I was kind of embarrassed about how easily i took out your golems. Each of my guys had the advantage, but only slightly and by my calculations the odds of my winning three in a row were 7% and three in row without losses 1.2%. So unless my math is wrong you wuz robbed! Stymphalian Golem raiders are very excellent- they are nearly unstoppable against nation without astral, but as you saw astral nations have a straightforward counter. Even without my extraordinary luck they would have gone down eventually to a much cheaper unit.

Some other random thoughts on this game-

Marignon was a weak nation in DomII, but i kinda thought the doubled economy in 3 would fix that, and to my satisfaction it has.

I have learned a whole new respect for Astral Fires, Aby would have kicked my butt without that spell and AE with 100 precision just generally rox!

Why no Blood magic from Abbysia? Others disagree, but i think Aby is one of the top Blood nations and i don't know why one would play them and not use it.

Cat- It seems like you have been in at least half the games i've played online and i'm always glad to see you on the roster and hope to have a border with you. Seems like the two of us have come in 2nd third in a half a dozen games. You are a man after my own heart- you don't babble or engage in Byzantine diplomacy, you don't get overrun and cause a power vacum, and until this game you have never broken a NAP. Under the circumstances I don't really hold it against you, it was a half hearted attack in game that was pretty much done, but a declaration would have been a nice formality.

Thanks to all for the game, and big thanks to Graeme for hosting!

Congratulations to Tyrant for the win against multiple opponents. Very impressive.

Not sure how catquiet's nap with me or tyrant squares with casting astral corruption and illwinter, but it was intersting watchng the world gradually come to an end.

I thought i was learning to live with astral corruption and then i get a visit from the "slave to unreason" while casting a not too ambitious ritual. Not sure why the over reaction there. He is not a nice guy to get a visit from.

Brave fight by all the tyrant opponents. Sorry I could not help, I was boxed in by the giants with an ironclad nap and a big ocean full of Atlantians

Too bad the game ended before i could find out exactly what it is illwinter does. Anyone know what it does besides cause a little unrest and maybe a colder weather?
