I am new to Dom III and am looking for an early age PBEM game. Please let me know if you are starting one...I would love to join...if you can put up with a noob.

I will join you in an Early Era game, and would be willing to host if we limit the game to 5 or fewer players.

CharonJr

Hello,

I would be interested in joining, too - but be warned, I did only play 1 MP game of Dom2 before http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif

Up to 5 players sounds good to me, too. This should allow us to play on one of the smaller maps which should help since we will not be stuck with any stupid mistakes we made for a very long time http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

I would be interested in playing as well. I've only played one full multiplayer game, and that was back in PPP, so I should be novice enough... I may also be able to host if solo can't for whatever reason.

Nerfix

I could join in too.

CharonJr
October 26th, 2006, 12:08 PM
BTW, IMHO we should make some "houserules" concerning the "über-bless" nations, especially for Helheim being bugged with being able to produce their sacred cav in non-home provinces.

Nerfix might have some good ideas concerning houserules since he seems to be the most knowledgable of us concerning Dom3.

CharonJr

Nerfix
October 26th, 2006, 12:28 PM
I'd propably go for something like no Hel or underwater nations. Hel is bugged as of now and we can't trust a player not to spam Helhirdlings and water nations can be very problematic in few player games.

solo
October 26th, 2006, 02:00 PM
No Helheim and no underwater nations sounds good.

I would also propose a fast pace, with a 24 hour deadline in between moves, with an allowance for timeouts, should players require breaks during the game.

We have 5 players now, so if everyone concurs, we can start a game soon.

Nerfix
October 26th, 2006, 03:18 PM
Aye, Marverni or Agartha for me.

ajr
October 26th, 2006, 05:36 PM
So what will the settings be?

CharonJr
October 26th, 2006, 07:47 PM
I would like C'tis then (would have taken Atlantis otherwise), I haven't played them in Dom3 yet, but I liked them in Dom2 http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif - Hmm, or maybe my Aztec-friends from Mictlan would be interesting, too. Haven't really played heavy blood nations before.

Oh well, lets wait for the rules/settings http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

BTW, how about limiting sleeping/imprisoned pretenders to magic paths <9 ?

This should prevent the fairly often critizied abuse of high-bless strategies without taking hard hits on the scales.

Ichtarian
October 27th, 2006, 08:16 AM
Great...I am ready to go. I was going to be Atlantis...hence my name Ichtarian but if you guys do not want to have water nations, that's fine. I will be Ermor as my second choice. Let me know when we are ready to start. I have a good week to play before I have to go out of town.

CharonJr
October 27th, 2006, 08:50 AM
Anybody having problems with the following "house rules" ?

1. No underwater nations
2. Helheim is banned due to the Helhirding-bug
3. Only awakened pretenders might have magic paths of 9 or 10

CharonJr

Nerfix
October 27th, 2006, 09:17 AM
Fine by me.

solo
October 27th, 2006, 09:23 AM
I think we should allow Ichtarian his first choice as Atlantis, since this is his very first PBEM game.

My preference would be for using easy research and the Aran map as a means of countering uber bless rushes, but if the majority wants only awakened Pretenders at magic levels 9 or 10, I will agree.

Game options? Renaming is probably one to allow. Other than that, the defaults are probably fine.

CharonJr
October 27th, 2006, 09:28 AM
Aran has how many provinces (am at work atm)?

Edit: I don't know how effective easy research is as a counter to heavy-bless, but maybe with Helheim out of the race it might be viable. If you prefer no restrictions concerning magic paths and easy research this would be fine by me, too.

CharonJr

I'd like to try Kaisala. I have no objection to the proposed easy research or banning lvl 9 bless on non-awake pretenders.

Ichtarian
October 27th, 2006, 02:48 PM
I would love it if I could try out Atlantis (hey...I will probably get killed anyway) but like I said, I will be Ermor if not. Let's try to see of we can get started by 10-28 if possible. Thanks guys for replying...

Can I still fit in this game? I'd play Ermor probably.

solo
October 27th, 2006, 07:52 PM
Okay, but let's get going before we are 7 or more. So we have:

ichtarian - Atlantis
Charon Jr. - C'tis
ajr - Kaisala
Nerfix - Marverni or Agartha, but not both, okay?
Celestial Gobyln - Ermor
solo - Sauromatia

Game guidelines:

1) No one can play Helheim
2) Only awake Pretenders can use magic 9 or higher
3) Aran map will be used
4) Easy research and renaming game options
5) 24 hour deadline in between moves, but players may request timeouts in advance if they have to be away.
6) Aran map will be used.

If there are not any objections, Pretender files and email addresses can be sent to me at pmhalf@earthlink.net Make sure to give your Pretender file a password.

I will host as often as a complete set of moves is received, so we may be able get in a more than one turn a day on some days.

Okay, so far I have received 4 Pretender files and have sent email confirmations for each player to test out communications. My email to the email address given by ajr for game files could not be delivered, so I replied to his original email address with details of this problem. Status:

ichtarian - Atlantis pretender received

CharonJr - Mictlan pretender received okay by email, so there is no need to download the file you posted

ajr - Kaisala pretender received, but problem with your game email address

Nerfix - Marverni pretender received

Celestial Gobyln - waiting for your Ermor Pretender

That's it for now. The game can start as soon as reliable a reliable email link to ajr is established. Hopefully, CG's pretender will arrive by that time.

CelestialGoblyn

This downloaded file is not working on my end. When I rename the file and run the game I get a game version error for your .2h file, so could not host.

It seems very odd you can not even send turns to me now by email. This was never was a problem before. Perhaps you could try emailing your turn again and make a note of the problem if there is a delivery error for you.

Ichtarian

I agree...problem is...that just quickens the pace of my complete and total destruction. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

solo
November 3rd, 2006, 10:51 PM
With fewer players the faster pace is really nice!

Even with just 6 of us in this game, 4 out of 5 moves often arrive in my mailbox within an hour or two, and we have to wait much longer for that final one because of differences in our personal schedules and timezones.

Without a 24 hour deadline in between moves, it is easier for any player to keep postponing the completion of their move for another day or two, but doing this can be inconsiderate when the other players wish to keep the game moving along.

Our provision for player timeouts lets all players know if the 24 deadline has to be temporarily suspended and when players can expect the game to continue.

None of the rest of us really know what we are doing either, Ichtarian, so the army of fish may be the strongest after the dust settles on the mainland!

CharonJr

I would say not quite yet, since some of us are playing in other PBEM games.

Page 31 of the manual says that a host must patch before using files from players who have patched. So if a player has patched for one game, but is playing in another game where the host has not patched yet, there could be a problem hosting his turns.

I suppose what is needed is a consensus to patch among game hosters for current games in this forum, so that all PBEM games are updated with patches at the same time.

CelestialGoblyn
November 4th, 2006, 03:06 AM
I'd be fine with patching up myself, but I won't insist.

solo
November 4th, 2006, 03:15 AM
I've just read in the forums that mixed versions will not cause crashes, so I will apply the patch before hosting this turn. Just in case something does get fouled up, the current game files will be backed up into another folder before I host #11.

solo
November 4th, 2006, 03:19 AM
Errr, nerfix, could you send me turn #10 again, attaching early_marverni instead of mid_marignon!

Turn #11 hosted with version 3.01 and sent.

Please update your copy of Dominions 3 to version 3.01 before doing your turn. Thanks.

Turn #11 does not include mid_marignon!

This reminds me of another MP PBEM Dominions II I was playing in. My detailed plans to attack an opponent were indadvertantly messaged to him instead of my ally! Profuse thanks for this info arrived with the next turn! I blame the game for not having a header on the message screen reminding players who they think they are corresponding with.

http://www.shrapnelcommunity.com/threads/showflat.php?Cat=&Number=467272&page=0&view=collap sed&sb=5&o=&fpart=1

It appears that with the new patch, there is a bug making horrors attack units which are not horror marked. This would be unfair if it happened to one of us in our MP game.

So if this happens to anyone in our game, please let me know ASAP after receiving a new move. Until this is fixed, I will save a backup copy of the game before hosting each turn, in case we need to restore the game to rehost a turn.

November 9th, 2006, 02:02 PM
Same problem again, this turn. Unusuable .2h file has been received again, which is 40.5 KB in size again, the same as the previous unsuable file. Looks like this one should be pinpointed and banished to the recycle bin.

solo
November 9th, 2006, 07:10 PM
It's now past the 24 hour deadline since turn #19 was sent.

Although all .2h files arrived on time, the one sent for Marverni was unusable. In cases when the wrong file is sent or when the .2h file is not usable, that player will be notified by email and by private message that their turn is not yet complete, and notice will be posted here allowing that player another 24 hours to complete their turn. If a usuable .2h is not received by the second deadline, hosting will take place anyways.

solo
November 10th, 2006, 01:29 PM
Usable .2h just received from Marverni in time. Thanks!

Turn #20 hosted and sent.

solo
November 11th, 2006, 11:51 AM
Now Marverni reports problems with the .trn file sent to him, saying a new turn was not generated. However, the .2h returned to me produces a dash next to Maverni Turn 20, when I open up the game. We are now working together in an attempt to resolve these problems with Marverni game files, so Turn #21 might be delayed a bit.

I am also waiting for turn #20 from Atlantis.

Waiting for Marverni.

Unfortunately, if his move does not arrive within an hour, I will have to leave to catch a bus shortly before the deadline expires and will be away all day. Sorry if this causes a delay, but I thought we would have been able to get another turn processed before I had to leave.

The latest turn from Marverni placed that nation under AI control. On the previous turn I had received a note from nerfix apologizing for his delays and missed turns. He says he has been extremely busy.

Two nations, Ermor & Kailasa are no longer with us, but they may be looking for some revenge if we have another game. We have a good group of players now, who seem to like our rapid pace, and perhaps we can start a fresh game fairly soon.

CharonJr
December 13th, 2006, 11:20 AM
I would prefer early era again since I have not even begun to take a look at the other eras http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

My main problem with roleplaying is that while it is a very nice addition and adds flavor/fun to the game I mostly lack the time for it.

Even now my girlfriend is not too happy about me sitting in front of the PC for 1-2h each day after I get home from work at around 7pm http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif

Trouble with early era is that Man is unavailable. Middle Era is probably the best compromise, since it is most similar to Early Era and offers Man as a choice, and very similar to Dominions II, which I think we are all familiar with.

ajr has responded to my email saying he would like to particpate. I have yet to hear from Celestial Goblyn.

Would anyone else like to take a turn as the host for the next game. I am willing, but think it's best that we take turns doing this chore.

ajr
December 13th, 2006, 12:51 PM
I would be fine with Middle Era. I would also prefer a non-RP heavy game due to time constraints.

I'm willing to host this one.

Ichtarian
December 13th, 2006, 04:02 PM
Middle Era is fine. No problem with the RP BUT I will be providing a detailed narrative of the game from the perspective of one of my generals and/or priests. Of course the story will paint Man in the positive light but I think you all may get a kick out of reading about yourselves from man's perspective.

solo
December 13th, 2006, 06:11 PM
If we decide on Middle Era, then I think I would like to play as Jotunheim this time.

Thanks ajr, for volunteering to host.

One game option I would like is Renaming. The map and any other options or groundrules selected by ajr for this game are fine with me.

I thought the ground rules/options we had last time worked well, but I'm certainly open to discussion - I don't know if sacreds are as big a problem in MA.

solo
December 14th, 2006, 12:17 PM
I would agree that there should not be any restrictions this time on sacreds.

CharonJr
December 14th, 2006, 01:35 PM
Well, MA would be ok to me, too, but is has been more than 1 year since I last played Dom2.

I would like to stick to blood magic, so I think Abysia should be my MA choice, or are there any other blood heavy races in MA ?

Not sure if sacreds are a problem in MA either, but will try to take a look around the forums if there is anything about it.

Looking over the sunraybe spreadsheet, the only MA nations I see with any blood at all are Absyia, Jotunheim, Pangaea, and Vanheim (although it's missing Marignon and Mictlan).

CharonJr

Looking at this thread:

http://www.shrapnelcommunity.com/threads/showflat.php?Cat=&Board=dom3&Number=477827&page=0& view=collapsed&sb=5&o=&fpart=all

it looks like Vanheim, Machaka, Agartha, Ermor and Marignon would be the main culprits concerning being "overpowered" due to a heavy bless strategy. So if none of us wants to play any of those we should not even think about restrictions on bless.

But since I have played neither I have no idea even IF someone wants to play one of those nations a restriction is needed...

I have not heard back yet from Celestial Goblyn, so would assume he is not interested and would say that yes, we have one spot open if you would like to join the game.

Please be aware that we play at a rapid pace, using 24 hour deadlines between moves, although players are allowed to call for timeouts when special circumstances or illness require them to take a break.

Heh, I underestimated how much nations change between eras. I was going to play Agartha but they are quite diffferent than EA agartha, specifically they lose those nice conj spells.

Sorry I've been so quiet here; Wednesday and Thursday are my busy days.

I believe the current position is:
Desert Eye
Easy Research, Renaming on, other settings standard
Ichtarian - Man
solo - Jotunheim
CharonJr - Abysia
Strages Sanctus - Agartha?
ajr - I'll take Caelum.

I have pretenders from Man and Jotunheim. You can post pretenders here or mail them to ajr-dom3 at club.cc.cmu.edu

If no one objects, I may move this over to a tcp hosted game once we're up and running; I need to do a little more script work before that's a viable option.

ajr
December 16th, 2006, 12:05 AM
I checked the map list; I didn't see anything more appropriate than Desert Eye, or I would have suggested it.

EvilHomer, I think we can probably get one more on this map, but I'd like to get the game going soon. Please try to get your pretender up by tomorrow morning so I can get things running. I don't think we need more than one water nation; five land+1 water will still leave more land provinces per player than there are water provinces, and all of the current nations have something resembling underwater capability (Abysia can reanimate, although they'd have to get a commander or trade for a ring of water breathing)

Thanks for getting the pretenders in, everyone; I think we're ready to go.

I have this set up as a network game. The server has IP address 71.145.171.112, port 1610. To join the game, go through Network->Connect to a Dominions Server, and answer the questions it asks you. Play your turn and hit end turn as usual; once everyone has done their turn, it will move to the next turn, with no file shuffling needed.

Currently, the server is set to quickhost on no fixed schedule, but I'd still like to try to keep to the 24 hour schedule we had last time. I can set the server to autohost after 24 hours, but I don't want to do that until we're sure everyone can connect.

Also, I just realized that I don't have everyone's email address. I do have the server set up to send out mail when a turn rolls over; if you send me your email address, I'll add you to the list that gets such mail.

What follows is advice for Windows users to make playing server games easier; you don't actually need to do this, but you may find it helps. Make a copy of your shortcut to dom3 and rename it something that you'll associate with this game (I called it Desert Eye). Right-click on the new shortcut and choose properties. The "target" field will contain something like "C:\Program Files\dominions3\dom3.exe". After the closing quote, add
-C --ipadr 71.145.171.112 --port 1610
and hit OK. When you click on this shortcut, you'll automatically connect to the server.

Good luck, everyone!

solo
December 16th, 2006, 01:26 PM
I have tried the modified shortcut, but it did not work, so used the usual shortcut, typing in my ip address and the port to play my first turn.

Could you check the command and its syntax to make sure it is correct?

December 16th, 2006, 03:39 PM

Argh. You're not doing anything wrong, Ichtarian; my IP address actually changed for the first time in a month. The server is now at 71.145.167.202 (for future reference, the server is always at rupes.dyndns.org, but I don't believe Dominions can handly hostnames).

Sorry for the confusion.

Actually, I'm wrong - it looks like Dominions *can* handle domain names. Please replace the ip address in the information I gave you with rupes.dyndns.org, which should handle any future changes.
